Contemporary culture has a grossly distorted view of what it means to be a person, emphasizing vanity over value, wealth over worth, and upward mobility over a higher calling. It's a view that author Ed Young stands ready to challenge. As founder and senior pastor of Fellowship Church in Dallas, the fifth largest church in America, Young has seen both the devastation that wrong views can bring and the liberation that can be found when a godly perspective takes hold. Writing in a highly readable style, Young confronts the pain and scars that hinder our growth and encourages readers to see exactly who they are in the eyes of a God who loves them beyond compare and wants the best for their lives.
Ed Young is the founding pastor of Fellowship Church and a New York Times bestselling author. Ed and his wife Lisa have been married for over 40 years and have four children, one who is in Heaven. Fellowship Church is known for creatively and boldly communicating the Bible and equipping people for the challenges of everyday life.
Through his leadership as founding and Lead Pastor of Fellowship Church, the church has been consistently ranked as one of the most attended churches in North America over the past decade. Since 1990, Fellowship has grown from 30 families to multiple campuses in Dallas/Fort Worth (TX) and an online campus as well.
With a passion to equip and train leaders in the church, Ed began C3 Global, CreativePastors.com and the Creative Church Conference (C3) in order to provide resources to thousands of pastors and leaders around the world.
Ed has also had the opportunity to publish several books on the topics of leadership, Christian living, marriage and parenting.
Ed is a New York Times best-selling author and his books include: Sexperiment: 7 Days to Lasting Intimacy with Your Spouse. His other books include: The Marriage Mirror; The Creative Leader; and Outrageous, Contagious Joy, The Fear Virus.
You! The Journey to the Center of Your Worth is an inspiring look at the interconnected nature of self-esteem and Christian spirituality. As the author states, many Christians mistakenly believe that looking within and working on one's own issues of self-esteem is a selfish act. They worry that if they focus on themselves they will become selfish and forget to give praise to God. The author states that although selfishness can lead Christians away from God, becoming all that you can be not only shows your appreciation for His gifts but also allows you to fully live and share His message.
There are a few things very unique about this book. Very few (if any) books have been written that acknowledge let alone address the very prominent Christian worry about becoming self-centered. Moreover, the author has the unique ability to explain concepts using stories and analogies and then related these concepts back to the issue at hand. He then goes even further to back up everything he says with quotes from the bible. I expect that these abilities and methodologies make the author a very popular, entertaining, and effective minister.
I'll admit I have mixed feelings about "You" by Ed Young. The book definitely has some good things to say. It discusses self-esteem and a biblical approach to the topic. Young deconstructs and then reconstructs the idea of worth and ways it's shattered. He also discussed ways to rebuild it. It's a valuable book but perhaps not life altering. I would recommend it through. It was enlightening.
