What do a sexy vampire, a broody demon, a dangerous necromancer, and a gorgeous reaper have in common?

Me. My life in the motorcycle club is pretty much what you’d expect. I was raised by my single dad, I know everything there is to know about fixing bikes, and while the guys in the MC are rough around the edges, they are family in all the ways that count. So when I grab my helmet and hit the road, what I don’t expect is the most irresistible urge to drive right off the pier—which is exactly what I do. As I sink into the depths, I see the most unexpected thing of my mother’s face. Next thing I know, I’m wrapped in a glowing net and surrounded by the magical police who claim I’m an undocumented siren, and I can either go with them or be harpooned on the spot. I don’t know the first thing about magic, but with a harpoon in my face, what choice do I have? That’s how I come to be the newest student at the Academy of the Underworld. While trying to figure out where I fit in, I meet a demon, a reaper, a necromancer and a vampire, all of whom draw me in with the same irresistible call that brought me to the water in the first place. As if that weren’t enough, I’ve arrived just in time to be terrorized—personally—by the angry supernatural being who has already killed two people on campus. He calls to me in the night and I fear if I answer him, he’ll find where I’m hiding. Yay me. All I want to do is get out of here, but between this whole magic siren thing, my classmates that tend to be more bully than friend, the voice in the night, and the four hot guys who make my blood race, I’ll be lucky to make it to tomorrow. DNF 71%, I don’t care if they are not fated mates, but if they are not, you have to build a relationship. It bothered me to no end that the MC was prsctically in love with all they guys before they even speak, and even more the feeling seems to be mutual. No, just no. If you want to do that at least make them mates or something so I have a minimal reason to believe it. I know we all want to get to the good part, but you have to build something to get there, otherwise it’s a pretty weak and unrealistic relationship. I get it’s fiction, bur come on.

Not For Me (Spoilers)

Though I was intrigued by several aspects of this story, it didn't quite work for me.

What I Liked:
*"Bad" supernaturals vs "good" supernaturals. I find the idea that there is a subset of otherwordly characters that are shunned by others because of some perceived villainous nature, fascinating. The author touched on the character's frustration at this inequality while also showing that these characters aren't inherently evil.
*Sirens. I have read a couple of books with sirens but not many. I thought the idea about them having three classes was interesting especially how their class reflected in the siren's personality.
*The main mystery. I finished this book because I did want to know more about the villain and how he was tied to the main character.

What I Didn't Like:
*Very little to no development. This was in all aspects; character and relationship building, scene setting, world building etc.
*The romantic relationships. This ties into the previous comment. How the relationships happened felt very unnatural and forced. Here is an example but it will be a spoiler. So the main heroine first meets Devin. He is broody and annoyed. They are only introduced but she feels a lot of lust and a connection. Then she meets Xavier who seems very flirty and interested. The FMC once again gets lusty and feels a connection. Right after, mean girl Sorcha stakes her claim on Xavier. Then the heroine meets Carrick. He too seems flirty and interested. She once again feels lusty and a connection. They make plans to meet that night which they do. He walks in the door and they have sex. After all of this she thinks about how she likes all three guys equally and can't choose. I found this befuddling because one guy showed no interest and one seemed like he had a girlfriend. As far as this reader knows, the FMC doesn't know anything about any of the three other than what they look like, their names and what species they are. It gets worse when she decides to talk to each of the guys. Her presumption of a relationship which was built on almost nothing then the guys reactions. It was very odd and extremely unsatisfying since there was no build up of tension, banter or them getting to know each other.

There was more but most of what I didn't like can be attributed to lack of detail and development. I am still curious about a couple of things but I don't think I will be continuing with the series. On a positive note, It does seem as if most who read this book enjoyed it. I would definitely not discourage anyone from giving it a try.

Haven’t met any of the heroes yet, but not digging the heroine or initial world-building. Plus I realized this is a multi-book/same-romance series and life’s too short.

2 Stars...

Not trying to be overly critical here, but the book fell short for me. There was no world building and hardly any description of characters. They're supposed to be supernaturals that can't be trusted and thus must be trained at school so they can be trusted in society. This story line is becoming a new trend it seems, which I'm all for. I personally like it when an author takes an idea they like and makes it their own, however there's nothing really original here, or anything at all. And there's nothing to really suggest that the MC is even at a supernatural school. Other than a few small things that involve magic/powers, I'd say she's pretty much at a normal school. I feel like there should have been more for this book. It's the first in a series, but it really felt like half a book.

The pace of this book and the writing was very slow. The book takes place just over a months time, and in that time the MC forms 'bonds' with others that leave me confused. Even though she has breakfast, lunch and dinner with her friends we know hardly anything about them and they seemingly have no other interaction. Then with her love interests, she hardly speaks to them before she's come to the conclusion that each one is the guy for her. There's more interaction with her friends then her lovers and I'm just not here for that.

ONE ELECTRIFYING ADVENTURE!!!
Intensely delightful! Laney brought out the big guns for this tough as nails, nerve racking, jaw dropping, rollercoaster ride, blasting this bad boy wide open. A swirling multitude of vexing circumstances and unexpected mishaps, blows this baby into the eye of the storm, breaking it down, blasting it into a tailspin with a stunning culmination. Producing incredibly, well rounded scenario's that punch dead center with such exuberance and style, wielding the intensity and precision, blazing this gem together seamlessly. Bumbling through the trials and tribulations, surprising twists and sleek turns, testing our characters in ways they could have never anticipated. Sparks fly as drama, tension, intrigue, danger and soaring suspense, rule the roost in this thrilling storyline and gripping plot that blasts this jewel to life spectacularly. Add distress, turmoil and a boatload of trouble, makes for one thrilling experience. The characters are genuine and authentic with qualities and traits that blend into outstanding personalities. The scenes are strikingly sharp with such colorful descriptions it gives you a full understanding and realism that flow smoothly. Remarkable job Laney, thanks for sharing this little fella with us.

DNF - Quit at 54%.

At my age (approaching 60), life is way to short & my time is to important to force myself to read a book I'm not enjoying, especially when there are so many other books out there waiting to be read.

I struggled with what rating to give this, because I reaaaally didn’t like it but didn’t absolutely hate it either. 2 might be generous but the promise was there.

For starters, the plot was great! Girl didn’t know supernatural world existed. Girl finds out she’s a siren and is classed as an Underworlder. Learns mom was a siren and there’s a divide between Underworlders and the rest of the supernaturals (who I guess don’t have a name? I don’t remember them having a title). And finds out there is some sinister asshole, with some connection to her mom, after her.

The main problem with this book was the execution. It’s listed as a Why Choose Reverse Harem but there is NO CHEMISTRY between the characters. There is no “fated mates” or “bond mates” to play the instant ONE-SIDED connection. It’s just, “hey I saw them, they were hot, and I want a full-blown relationship with all of them even though I only know their names and have interacted with all 5 minutes.” Seriously. One of the guys she met the first day at school and they introduced themselves and then walked away. That was it. No “he was checking me out and I was checking him and there was this instant supernatural connection.” Just exchanged names. And he didn’t seem happy to meet her. But for whatever reason the MC is freaking out about potentially having a relationship with four guys, him included. Tell me how these subpar interactions turn into, “I want a relationship with all of them”?

And of course, there were proofreading mistakes. There weren’t as many I though there would be considering whenever an author puts books out this close together, you can tell they were rushed by the lack editing. And because I was annoyed with the execution of the book, they did stand out more to me. As a basis, you should spell all the characters’ names right.

Like I said the plot was great, the premise was there, but execution was so bad. I can’t keep reading the series.

Wonderful well written plot and story line that had me engaged from the start.
Love the well fleshed out characters and found them believeable.
Great suspense and action with wonderful world building that adds so much to the story.
Can't wait to read more of these.

Growing up in a MC, Raven knows nothing else but fixing bikes and hanging with her Dad and the club. Things change when she hears the call to the water. She's got a choice to make. Go to this school to learn who she is and her powers or die. Choices choices. Obviously, she chose not to die...school it is!

Raven has her hands full. Not only is she a siren she tests 3 kinds of siren! So, her case load is triple threat. Then she meets 4 holy hotness men. Carrick, a reaper, Xavier, a demon, Mikhail, a vampire and Devon, a necromancer. Then there is the mean girl squad well really one in particular, Sorcha who still carries a torch for Xavier. I daresay I like the Headmistress. She's really different and well what can you expect from Medusa? I mean she isnt Medusa but just like her. She's very old and definitely has a poker face. She knows quite a bit but she's very mysterious. Raven has made friends quickly too. Something weird is happening all around her and it seems it started happening when she arrived. Nightmares and attacks on various students in close proximity to her. Let's see if she can survive.

Here's what I think. Its actually a decent storyline. Typical Academy book series. Its not a long book. I think it should have been filled out a little more. We just scratched the surface. Normally, first books in a series gives us a lot of information and background stories. This not so much. I think the author could have went a little further but maybe she didnt want to make it longer. Thats fine but this is just okay. I really like Raven and she's down to earth. She can be bad** but she is also very vulnerable and new to her situation which I liked. I want more about her guys. Just kinda want more. This would have been slammin awesome if the author went just a little further. One heck of a cliffhanger too. I will read the next book but I can see some people might not want to bother because its just okay.

3.5 ⭐️s if I could give it a half star.
Overall I enjoyed the start to this series. I think it has potential. I finished it in one sitting so it definitely held my attention. I appreciate how spunky Raven is and she doesn’t cower being thrown into a completely new and unknown environment. Which if you read a lot of secretly-not-human stories you know most the time they follow a damsel-in-distress route.

I did feel like the pace was a little fast for my taste. Time jumps in a couple different places where I would have preferred to have had the details. I wish the author would have embellished more with the world building because it sounds like it could be really interesting. Maybe we’ll get more in the next two books. *Fingers crossed*

I can appreciate the ease of insta-love sometimes, but by the end of the book we know little to nothing about the four love interests. Again, I want the details. *grabby hands*

My biggest concern was that no one seems to have a real and serious conversation - the few that came close are very short and sweet. It made the story feel a little immature and hurt the build up of drama in my opinion. It also bothers me that everyone (law enforcement, faculty, friends, and fellow students) knows the FMC is in over her head and has no idea about this world they’ve forced her into yet they leave her to fumble around in the dark. Everyone just gives her bits and pieces in passing while acting like they care for her well being.

I’ve decided to go ahead and pick up book two to see where we go from here. Staying hopeful that the series picks up more as the storyline progresses.

Zoe is living with her Dad helping him run his motorcycle shop, hanging out with the club. Things start to change when her father says something to makes them fight. She decides get on her bike and get away from him. She is so confused and angry at him, she finds her way to the beach. She starts hear a voice calling to her to go in. She follows the voice and what happens next shocks her.
Zoe finds out that she is half-siren and that her mother is the siren. She doesn't know anything other than that. She is forced to go to the academy or die. Zoe will have her hands full with mean girls, the four boys that she is drawn to, figuring out what type of siren she is and why is come one coming after her.

This book was so good, it hooks you from the beginning until it ends. It has a different take on than the normal academy books. There are some steamy scenes that do not take away from the story. I am looking to see what is next for Zoe.

Raven had a very ordinary life as the daughter of a Biker club but when she gets into it with him she goes for a ride that changes who she thinks she is it has to do with her mother who disappeared when she was a kid. Now she's at and Academy for the less then pleasant supernatural. Vampires, Reapers,Necromancers, Demons and Sirens some will want her others will hate her and just as it starts to get better something else in the dark wants her. He says she has something he wants and he will get it. And other students are dying around her why is she to blame the head mean girls thinks so. Raven has got allot of attention some she likes some she doesn't. This book has a little bit of a cliffhanger in it but it still holds your attention there is romance and some sex. Cant wait to see what Raven gets into in the next book.

Our heroine has no idea she is a paranormal being until she is captured and literally forced to go to the Underworld academy. Talk about a rough start to schooling.

This is book one of a new paranormal academy story. While I have read many of these and the "surprise you're special" card has been played before, I am pleased to say this one still manages to stand out as different from the rest. You still get your share of bullies, cliches, boys and other academy tropes, but the story line is fresh and engaging. The story itself is well written and easy to read, while the plot produces several twists and unexpected circumstances which keep things interesting. The characters are also well developed, although I am hoping to learn a bit more about them in future books. And yes, I did enjoy this one and will be looking forward to the next book.

Highly recommended.

This is book 1 to the Academy of the Underworld and it’s an amazing start to this new series and I really liked Raven who was raised by a single dad in the MC. One day while Raven was out riding on her bike she felt the pull of the ocean so she drives her bike right off the pier next thing she knows is that Raven has been told that she is a siren and she’s given a choice and that’s either die or be taken to the Academy of the Underworld so guess which one she picks!. From there she meets 4 sexy guys who are drawn to her as she is to them there’s bullies, a body count and a voice that comes to a Raven in her dreams. I loved this story it’s a 5 plus ⭐️ read and I highly recommend this book it’s definitely well worth the read.

Good

Driving her motorcycle off a jetty and into the ocean wasn’t something Raven planned to do, it just happened; unfortunately for her, that once incident led to her being discovered as a siren, and placed in a school for “undesirables”.
There she makes new friends, meets four men she’s attracted to, and learns a lot about the heritage she didn’t know she had.
Now if only the nightmares would go away…

The premise and storyline to the book was good, the romances were a little bit fast paced for my liking, but the characters were interesting.
There’s an intriguing sub-plot regarding Raven’s mother, and also her nightmares, so I’m definitely invested in what’s coming.

An entertaining series starter with an intriguing storyline and likeable characters.
Recommended for those who like academy romance and why choose storylines.

This is a fast paced adventure that ended too quickly! Cannot wait to get my hands on the next book in this series! Felt a little Percy Jackson to me with more perks; with Sirens, Vampires, Demons and more. Unbeknownst to Raven, she is part Siren and has been flying under the radar of the Concilium. However, she soon learns her nature and is required to attend the Academy of the Underworld where any supernatural predator, such as a demon or vampire must learn to control their power before integrating with the humans. Explosive attacks on the school, haunting nightmares and 4 hunky beef cakes! Who could ask for more?

Raven grew up without a mom, but her dad ran a motor cycle shop and also the head of a MC. Raven knew nothing but that life. One day she is riding and something drags her mind to ride off the moor. Now she is wet and being held captive. They bring her to the Underworld Academy. They are say that she is a siren. Is she? How can she get back home? What will she do There are four hot guys and she wants them all. What will she do to get them? What will she do to get rid of the class B* and her cronies? Of course we are left with a big cliffhanger.

Rushed and underdeveloped

Standard academy -style book. It's worth checking out the first but I'd say a good portion won't care to continue on. The story ends where the climax should be. There's a build up with no pay off. I wouldn't even say a cliffhanger really because the story wasn't fleshed out enough that entices me to get the next one unless there's nothing else to read. There isn't really romance included , it's more a rushed Insta attraction. The plot was rushed and underdeveloped. Very little character growth or development due to the rushed plot. Overall 3/5 very average.

A reverse harem supernatural academy tale, this author puts her own spin on the characteristics of these supes. Only one type of para has fated or destined life mates, leaving the door wide open for harems of any gender. Maybe one day using the term harem will not have to have reverse put in front of it, but anyways back to the book. The mature content is tastefully done even though it monopolizes a great portion of the book. This is a must for many readers. The storyline itself is unique, mysterious nightmares, unknown parentage, and an ending that will hopefully make you seek out the next in series. Will ponder this one for a bit. All my reviews are always voluntarily written.

Let’s see... MC meets four different guys the first couple of days at the academy. Only says hi to one guy in the hall in passing, jumps into bed with one on the first date, only met and kissed one because of a nightmare, kissed another while lost in the hall, and decides they should all agree to be in a committed relationship with just her. The guys haven’t even known each other yet they all are okay with it. While I enjoy RH, gotta say, they usually get to know each other and build toward a relationship, so this one is not enjoyable. While the storyline has good potential, the relationship of the characters throw it off balance.

New and Wonderful

What a new take on an old tale. The Siren are not a new subject, but this is definitely a new take on the story. And most of all, it's a great way to start a new series.
The mystery of who Raven is was never an issue for her before. Now her whole world is turned upside down, and she has no idea who or what she is. After living with her dad her whole life, now she's thrust into a world she never knew existed. How she deals with it is quite unique. Now, if she could just learn her new world, where she fits in and who her mom really is, she'd be doing great. But will she learn in time?
On to the next book to find out more. Happy reading!

Waking Darkness is book one of the Academy of the Underworld series and a page turner. This is a fast paced read filled with action, drama, danger, mystery, suspense and twists that pulled me into the story. I like the way the author introduces Raven and how she finds out she is part Siren. A vampire, a demon, a reaper, a necromancer and a siren are some of the intriguing characters in this reverse harem paranormal fantasy series. I look forward to reading the rest of this series. Oh but for a simple life

This book is an excellent read for anyone who loves supernatural.
It begins when Raven argues with her dad and takes off on her motorcycle, she rides it into the ocean and is attack by two people who insist she is a siren.
With a choice of attending an academy or death it's an easy choice, but when she arrives at the mysterious academy things begin to go wrong. Someone is out to get her and she doesn't know who or why. Maybe the help of four gorgeous men will help

While trying to figure out where I fit in at school, I meet a demon, a reaper, a necromancer and a vampire, all of whom draw me in with the same irresistible way a call brought me to the water in the first place. As if that weren’t enough, I’ve arrived just in time to be terrorized -- personally -- by the angry supernatural being who has already killed two people on campus. Great start!

What a great start to a new series that doesn’t disappoint! I loved the storyline which had wonderful characters and filled with lots of mystery, suspense, danger and heat level. Raven’s journey just started but it had high impact with the introduction of the men that will change her world. A definite must read for fans of reverse harem paranormal romance. What a great start to this new world by Lanel Powell. I love reverse harems and Laney brings a little something else to the trope but also with the fantasy aspect. Just the fact that it basically starts with a sort of suicide intrigued me and it only gets better from there with the mystery and magic and the crazy hot supernaturals.
