Hunting a serial killer can be hazardous to your health.
My name’s Selena Valeron, and I’m the Supernatural Bureau of Investigation’s best undercover witch. After three years, the bureau has just handed me my biggest case: hunting the magical community’s most prolific serial killer, Xavier.
Lately the dead women on the morgue table bear an eerie resemblance to me. A shocking revelation indicates the killer is someone from my past—if I can remember it. Years ago, an accident wiped out my memory and threatened to end my career. Now my magical powers seem to be manifesting into something stronger.
Was my memory loss really an accident, or a failed murder attempt?
Time's ticking as I dig through my past to find the killer. I need answers. If I can't get them in time, I'll lose friends, family—even my own life.
MAGIC LIES is a fast-paced urban fantasy mystery with plenty of thrilling twists and turns that will keep you guessing. Agent Valeron may have lost her memory, but she hasn't lost her snarky attitude and she's still a badass witch. Jump into this magical world and start reading the Selena Valeron series today!
A few problems with this one but there is potential.
There is something strange about the writing, its bald and disconnected chapter to chapter. There is almost no prose? merely dialogue so it feels like a part of the book is missing. The entire book is kind of sparse and a bit clunky if that makes sense.
Other than that, its quite a nice plot with good potential for an interesting series. 2.5 stars,
This is a short read and it's more like a taster of what's to come. She has distanced herself from her family and is now working for a secret division of the government. Retrieving item they want. However the next case she is given throws her into turmoil. A serial killer. However things aren't always what they seem and when her flatmate dies her world comes crashing down. The things that she has been told are lies and now tumble like a house of cards. But one thing is clear - she will bring in the killer of her flatmate. By hook or by crook!
I liked the premise, and the characters from agency fitted what I’d expected: the reliable partner, the hot head, the secretive manager, and then there is Fiona from whom you get mixed signals.
Anyway, after the sh!t hits the fan, and accusations are made, there is a great twist in Selena’s story that I was not expecting, so it looks like after this cliff hanger - in mid conversation! - I’ll be getting book 2 to see how it all shakes out.
I liked the main character and her ability to disallow bullies to get away with slander. This did not stop those with inflated self importance to spew hate though.
This appears to be the first 5 or so chapters instead of the whole book. Please fix. Thankfully I borrowed this through kindle unlimited or I’d be really unhappy. The start has promise.
Every now and then one of the authors I read will suggest a book, sometimes I say yes and buy the book. It might sit in my Library for a few months, but I always get around to them sooner or later. I got to this story sooner! I'm happy I took the time to read it. I'm really looking forward to reading more of your books. Best to you, Your new fan, Allen
This story is basically the first episode of the TV show Alias with magic and not much of it.
I get the impression the author is terrible at editing or English is her second language. The wrong tense is often used or entirely the wrong word.
The timeline is wonky e.g. the main character is sent home under a cloud of suspicion, is allowed back, starts working the case and then her boss questions why she’s there when she’s not supposed to be. The MC and her partner question someone and when she goes back to speak to her again asks her about man she mentioned when no man was spoken about.
The ending is quite abrupt, while not precisely a cliffhanger it’s like the author just decided to stop writing with very little resolved. I prefer a series to have an arc for each book as well as the whole storyline.
This story has, I think, potential with poor execution.
I was ready to score this book higher until the author decided that she would quickly end the book after chapter 19. Did she his get tired of writing? Chapter 20 just comes out of no where with no build up. I went back because I thought surely I missed something. No, it's like the author jumped ahead in the story with zero explanation. So the pacing of this book is horrible. The ending is predictable, but that alone isn't enough for a one star rating. It's the fact that the end seems completely unbelievable because it feels like a chunk of the book is missing. How anyone could rate this five stars is a mystery to me. Have they never read a book before?
For me this was a book that was very easy to put down & once resumed it took me awhile to get back in the groove. I liked the setting & found the amnesia angle interesting, but felt the characters were lacking personality & their actions were predictable, HOWEVER, the revelation at the end was surprising!
A very good paranormal book. I like the kick ass female character. The story line of her working of a secret organization IA-5 is good. The ending is cliffhanger but it should lead nicely into the next book.
Well written, nicely paced storyline. Enjoyable read but a bit too short. I didn't like that there was ending but will be continued in the next book. Still I will check out the next book in the series.
This is a good story of how a secret society can twist your thinking and turn you into something you despise , but yet hope through mistakes have a way to get you back on track.
This was an interesting read. But it is incomplete - more part 1 or a prequel. It sets up the premise and the main character but the rest are more names and description than characters that develop.
This is a great start to a new series, with some old familiar faces thrown in (Mateu and Carmen). It's also nice to read a series set in Barcelona. Recommend
wow!
Interesting characters and character relationships, reasonably solid writing, but the whole thing is just a prologue to a future story. Very disappointing.
I decided to start this new series because I have read from this author before and she never disappoints. I thoroughly enjoyed the book in the story and I cannot wait until March the next one in the series.
