A Falling Starr: The Complete Trilogy

A year ago I had woken up with no memory of who I was. No one seemed to know anything about me and for months the police investigated only to find nothing. The only thing I had was a necklace with the name Angela Starr.

The government gave me an ID with that name and let me enroll in a community college to get my GED. All the psychologists that they had examine me thought that would be best and going to school might jog some memories since they figured I was in my late teens. Well, it did, as I ran into a boy my age that I felt I knew, but before I could fully recover those memories, we found ourselves being chased into a portal that led to the other side of the universe.

But why did this other planet seem so familiar?

So this book is three short episodes rolled into one which I'm guessing makes it a lot more affordable than buying three separate instalments. It's YA sci fi about amnesiac Angela who has no recollection of her life before the past year. She thinks in and speaks a different language but is now ready to go to college and get some qualifications so that she can earn a living and go on to have as normal a life as possible. Sadly Angela is never going to have a normal human life because on her first day in class she spots Emmerich who seems awfully familiar and then there's the two goons following her ! You see Angela isn't really from around here and she's a long way from home !
I found the first instalment very interesting but once Angela leaves Earth everything seemed rather hurried along without a lot of world building. I had an idea that she might be someone important but sadly couldn't believe in the rather obvious bad guys who play a part here. Plus for this reader her romantic relationship just felt weird but then I'm not the target age for this so will not mark it down because of that. I will however say the writing felt clunky at times particularly compared to the initial section with a rushed ending .
This voluntary take is of a copy I requested from Netgalley and my thoughts and comments are honest and I believe fair

So this is all 3 novellas of Fallen Starr put together in one book, and that's a good thing because it would be a crime to read these on their own.

The protagonist's amnesia is already an intriguing premise, with her only knowledge of the past being a name they found on her and an affinity for science, which of course she had no idea where it came from. Just add the mysterious atmosphere surrounding the protagonist and the people who might be following her and Bam!, hooked from the first pages.

Then Emmerich appears, a boy who our protagonist Angela feels she knows. Although, he doesn't seem to know her, even though she has vision like memories of him. And if you thought it wasn't exciting enough, just wait until they are chased and end up going into a portal to another world!

Great 1st person POV, very realistic when it comes to emotions and random thoughts, like a trip in someone's brain. Angela is a bit too naive and a little whiny, but I guess that is understandable in her situation. The amnesia thing was done very well by the author. You feel her confusion, conflicting feelings and fear.

There are parts where it seems like the author is holding our hand, leading us through the story as if we were children. I know a lot of people will enjoy it, but some of that repetitiveness to me was a bit annoying.

There is a great lesson to be learned here of not only believing in yourself, but looking to those who believe in you, instead of those you want to bring you down. This was such an incredible, fast-paced, action-packed sci-fi adventure, but too short in my opinion. Needed more of this goodness.

A Falling Starr is a YA SciFi tale of a young woman with amnesia and her journey to finding herself. This is a trilogy but reads as one story. I enjoyed watching Angela find her strength and courage to fight for what she believes in. An enjoyable escape.

Book Review/Book Recommendation
A Falling Starr (The Complete Trilogy)
Author - Dani Hoots

Ebook - Genre - Sci Fic/Fantasy YA

My thoughts
Firstly I would like to thank FoxTales Press/Dani Hoots for gifting me this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This book is now published.

Who is Angela Starr? ..... Well this is a girl, who thinks thats what her name is.

Angela, after having an accident, wakes up in hospital and discovers she has amnesia. She knows she lives in Portland, her therapist decides it's best for her to go to a community school. So, we as readers follow her around the new chosen college and we are slowly introduced to new friends and circumstances along the way. However, life is more complicated than that and Angela discovers men dressed in black snooping around. The mystery continues from there. On one hand putting the puzzle together on who she is and in the other hand keeping a watch on these men in black. There is also Emmerich, a boy that Angela meets through school, there is definately a connection between the two, although to me, Emmerich seems a bit too sleek and suspicious for my liking.

I loved Dani Hoots writing. It's very light and suits the genre of Fantasy/Sci Fi well. I was so pleased that the author made Angela independent, sensible and created a realistic approach. well, apart from roaming all over the place in her pjs, although, kittens on pjs are excusable. Yes and Dani Hoots makes sure Angela leads a reasonably normal life as a student, microwaving is very essential these days.

The author knew my weakness in food and we have a platter throughout the book, such as donuts (well you got to have those) crepes, cinnamon honey bananas! (oh yum!!) Fire patties.
.
Quote
Emmerich led me to the little vendor that sold crêpes and, after a ten-minute wait, they were wrapped up and handed to us. I had ordered a strawberry cream, and he had ordered a cinnamon honey banana.
.

Lots of references to songs in this book which was apt to the age group of Angela, such as, "Labrinth", "Somebody You Used To Know" and some song verses were weaved into the story.

Angela also liked movies, TV programmes and again the author made it prominent in the story, eg, "Torchwood". "Dr Who" was a major influence and it's written in different forms of references throughout the book, I'm guessing the author is a huge fan.

Yes, the author lead me on a very curious hunt when it came to the mystery side of this story and I congratulate the author for keeping me in suspense, because at times it was hard to put this book down, a very nail biting lead towards the end of the story.

5 star rating ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Recommendation
I highly recommend this entertaining book and will suit all YAs out there that are interested in Fantasy and Sci Fi. Anyone who is after a mystery, as this had me scratching my head all the way through, and a touch a smidge of romance.

Starr wakes up without knowing who she is or where she comes from. When she enrolls in school she meets Emmerich and instantly feels like she knows him. I like that with this box collection getting all three books in the series. There is no waiting for the next book, you just can read on. I enjoyed Starr's story a lot and will definitely check out more books by this author.
I chose to read this book and all opinions in this review are my own and completely unbiased. Thanks to NetGalley and FoxTales Press!

Overall some of the most gorgeous formatting I've ever seen! Easy on the eyes and I just had to have a print of this one.

Book 1:
Immediately, I am intrigued by this girl, whose POV we are treated to as she's brilliant and living in the ever-eventful Portland, OR. I become more and more attached as I read on, only to discover that if I put the book down I am struck with that, "I miss my book" feeling and so, I must read until there is no more to be read.

Going along I cannot help but appreciate the current pop-culture references and mentions as they go along with my own perceptions of an area I do love so much but with objectivity.
I finished this book in a short amount of time due to its being so addictive; I do hope there's more to come with these characters, but it was wrapped up neatly that it works as a standalone as well.

Book 2:
Immediately I am brought right back into The Falling Starr world as Book 2 picks up exactly where Book 1 left off. It's as if I never left Book 1 - Hoots has a knack for series writing for sure. It takes a little bit before the action starts but that gives us plenty of time to be come acclimated to Angela's new surroundings / old life, etc. In this installment of the series, many questions are answered yet the story becomes more intriguing still. Like its predecessor I became rather addicted to the story, unable to put it down. Over too soon and, like Hoots' other books, it left me hanging. I'll be waiting for her next on the edge of my seat - I highly recommend getting caught up!

Book 3:
The book opens by finally giving us readers some more explanation of how Angel came to be in her current predicament - something I much appreciate, and one that I am satisfied with as the continuity is flawless. Angel has her hands full and the drama of it all is just wonderful! This is an interesting read, as Angel finds her way in this 'new-to-her' yet old world she is strong and brilliant. This is an incredibly brilliantly developed character - this can be said for the entire cast of the series, as Hoots is perfectly consistent.

Very well written as well which makes for faster, easier reading. As always - brilliant, Dani and thank you ! Keep writing, please.

Forgotten

Lovers of sci-fi and fantasy will love this. While this is only the first book, it's a quick read that offers a sense of adventure as Angela tries to unravel the world she forgot. There's more, but I believe in a no spoilers approach. The writing style is easy, not a stuffy sci-fi read, but lovers of Doctor Who will enjoy the references as much as the sweet story. While the characters are more in the NA range, it's easy enough for mature YA readers to enjoy too. It's a great start to the trilogy, and I look forward to finishing the trilogy.

Found

Angela's story continues as she starts remembering who people are and parts of why her memories are gone. Again, I'm not going to give it away. I'm still grasped in this sense of adventure as she travels further both metaphorically and literally. I'm a little annoyed (not really) with everyone treating her like a child, but I love that she calls them out. It shows strength despite her condition. Much of the fantasy/sci-fi is still present and that alone grabs my interest, but I can't wait to read what happens next.

Free

Raised for one purpose, Angela found a new one. Vague, I know. Nope. Still no spoilers from me. An exciting and riveting conclusion to the trilogy lodged with chase scenes, friendships, and valor. Not once was I disappointed in the story or left feeling unfulfilled. The seeds planted in the first book grew in a beautiful arc. Definitely an author to follow if you love clean tales of heroic deeds from unlikely characters.

I received a free copy of A FALLING STARR: THE COMPLETE TRILOGY by Dani Hoots in exchange for an honest review. A year ago, Angela Starr woke up with amnesia. Though she understood English, she instinctively spoke and thought in another language. Despite extensive investigation, Angela was unable to find out who she was prior to the accident. For the past year, Angela has been visiting various doctors trying to resolve her memory problems while attending community college to get her G.E.D. Recently, Angela has started to run into a familiar-looking young man about her own age; she’s drawn to him. At the same time, Angela notices some threatening-looking thugs following her. When the thugs attack, the young man whisks Angela off through a portal to another planet.

Though this is a “complete trilogy,” it was still pretty short. I’d classify it as a short novel. The story first meticulously establishes Angela’s routine on Earth. However, once Angela gets to the new planet, the narrative zooms to completion with little exploration of the new world or build-up to the finale. Most of the exposition regarding the second planet was done through flash-backs.

I had to remove two stars from my rating for a few reasons. I enjoyed the series, but it could have been longer. The end seemed especially rushed. In a few places the main character says "would of" when she should have said "would have". While it could be a person misspeaking, it was distracting and did not further the story. Speaking of the main character, is her name Angel or Angela? She is referred to by both names, so this is not clear. There are a few other minor issues with poor grammar, such as commas where there should have been periods. Lastly, the book ends in a cliche, and that's always annoying.

This was a complete collection of Hoots new book A Falling Starr. I really enjoyed the first one. I think that one is my favorite in the series, It had a lot of mystery and intrigue. The second, I felt that she made some really terrible decisions. She wanted to trust people, but didn't even trust herself. In a different environment she made terrible choices that left her and others compromised. The third book, in my opinion, seem rushed and could have used more detail, more time between events.

I received an advance reader copy in exchange for a fair review. These opinions are my own.

I really enjoyed this Trilogy. I couldn't imagine going through everything Starr encounters and who couldn't love Emmerich?? There was a lot of buildup and background that without, I would have been completely lost but I feel the majority of the true action and story happened in the last book. Dani has opened my eyes to a new genre of books that I haven't read previously. I look forward to reading more of them!!!

I received a copy of this book  fair and honest review. This is a set of novellas and they are a very short read. I think a little took short. They started out amazing and going from Oregon and then off to another planet. She wakes up with no memories and she trying to go to community college. She goes the planet and things seem familiar to her and she is trying to figure out why. This is something she has to figure out. I enjoyed it but I had wished it was a little bit longer.

I liked this book alot.. I did find the main character a little blah at times. At first I understood because she couldn't remember who she was but after remembering who she was there didn't seem to be a big enough change in her for me. Otherwise this book was good and not like something I've read lately!

Thank you to the Publisher and Netgalley for providing me the ebook for an honest opinion.

This book is a combination of 3 short stories. It's about a girl who wakes up one day and finds that she doesnt remember anything about her past self, even her name. She has a necklace around her on which there is a name etched which then becomes her name. It's been a year since she was found and she still has no clue who she is or where she came from. She goes to college, works saves up and tries to have a normal life. But she still feels like a stranger.
She meets a boy and the more she has contact with him the more she feels that she knows him and has seen him before and that they have a bond.

Turns out she is a pretty important person who isnt even from Earth but another planet.

Considering that this was like a collection of short stories it's really good. But I conveniently forgot to check the number of pages and read it like a novel. Which was disappointing because everything felt rushed, there was no character development, hardly any world building. The relationships between the characters wasnt explored. Apart from the fee mentions of some of my favorite shows like Dr. Who, Grimm, vampire diaries and the others which I enjoyed a lot there isnt anything much I was attached to. There is a lot of potential for this one.

Overall I'd say good concept.. for short stories.

I would especially like to thank FoxTales Press and the Netgalley website for allowing me to read this complete trilogy.

It features the main heroine who wakes up one day with no memory of who she is. Nobody knows anything about her, the police even investigated her for months on end, but never found anything. The only object found on her was a necklace with Angela Starr on it.

She has an ID card thanks to the government and will be able to go to school to try to get her GED. Everybody thinks she's going to be an adult soon. And she's going to meet a boy she thinks she knows and they're going to get chased through a portal that's going to take them to the other side of the universe. She's going to get to know this famous planet that will seem familiar to her.

A trilogy read in one go, so much so that I hooked on the story, which is so gripping, addictive, captivating, full of suspense and twists and turns with very endearing characters. Can't wait to read this trilogy in paperback.

Dani Hoots in an indie publisher (Fox Tales Press) who writes science fiction, fantasy and romance for the YA reader. She specializes in series, such as Daughter of Hades, A world of Vampires , and the Wonderland Chronicles. A Falling Starr was originally published in 2014. The 2020 ed. is a reissue.

This trilogy is more like the combination of three novellas. The total page count for the work is 121 pages.
Book 1 (Forgotten) is set in Portland OR. The lead character, Angela Starr, suffers from amnesia. She feels disconnected from this world. She is now entering Portland Community College. Her support group feel she is ready to integrate into society. However, she feels she is under observation. Is it
Emmerich, a young man who she feels she should know? One who even smells delightfully familiar? Or is it the two men in black who seem to be more menacing. And, if she has chosen to live in Portland, why does she hate the rain? The book ends on a cliff hanger.. Should she trust Emmerich?

Book 2 (Found) Angela finds herself galaxies away from earth, nauseous, wearing her kitten covered pajamas. Emmerich has transported her to an earth like environment. Not planet earth, there are two moons in the sky. Still experiencing amnesia, Angela is following Emmerich's lead.
She is in Capital City, on the planet Cartref, in a galaxy far far away... Theoretical physics slides in briefly, however hand waving seems to suit the action just as well. Emmerich has taken her to the rebel camp. Will her questions be answered? The situation is dangerous, war is on the horizon. What is expected of her? The book ends with the "Big Bad" in charge.

Book 3 (Free) The final novella increases the tension as rival factions battle for control of Cartref.
Hoot creates a charming alternate society. The Galaftns, an aquatic based people. The struggle is real, the outcome uncertain. Sorry no spoilers ahead.

Clearly written for YA audience, the work could also serve as an ESL (English as a Second Language) book. The only drawback is the trilogy was not revised when it was reissued. Cultural references now seem a bit dated. Hoot does prove herself to be a good writer. One hopes for more to come.

Full disclosure I received this edition as an ARC from netgalley and Fox Tales Press in exchange for an unbiased review. Thank you for this opportunity.

When I got this book in my hands, I started reading with an open mind. However, for the first few chapters I couldn't lose the feeling that I already read the story. When a friend asked me how it was, I mentioned a few things, like the overuse of the word I (comes with the pov), the added extra information, that didn't help drive the story and the way it was written, it felt more like a rambling of facts that happened, than a telling of a story. Needles to say, I wasn't enjoying it enough to lose myself in the story.

The writing and the story became more to my liking, after a while. And I felt like the author had grown during this project. The story gained speed, stuff actually happened and I was interested. The characters seemed to have gained more depth and I kept reading.

The middle part was rather long, but kept interesting, because information was revealed slowly. However the ending; to me, was a let down. I felt this was a quick rapping up of the story, and left me with that original, rather uninterested feeling.

In the end, I feel, the story idea was nice and interesting, but the author didn't deliver all that it could have been. The start of the story was far to long and did not attribute enough to the whole, while the ending was too short and felt hasty.

This book was absolutely amazing. It had the right amount of romance and action. I do feel that Michael's death could have been done a little better, the same with the death of Elwood. Also the ending was a bit rushed and I wish that she would have went into a little bit more depth about her and Emmerich's life after the war. Other than those factors the book was very enjoyable and I couldn't put it down. It had my attention from the start. It was new to read and I liked that it contained more mystery than action.

A young girl has amnesia. She has no memory of who she is or where she came from. Her name is Angela Starr or that is the name on the necklace she was wearing when they found her. When no one could predict her age they thought it to would be best if she took a few courses at a community college to see where she stands with her education.

The two guys who have been following Angela have finally caught up with her. They are trying to knock her down as they are trying to get inside her apartment. Who are these guys and what do they want with Angela?

A Falling Starr is a very intense read that kept me on the edge of my seat from start to finish trying to figure out who this girl was. The secrets and the twists just kept piling up one after the other keeping me in suspense at all times as I raced to the end so I could find out.

An interesting premise, but one that the author doesn't quite pull off in terms of writing. The book read more like an outline than a proper narrative, with needless detail. The protagonist, despite being powerful, appeared to be a damsel in distress, with men around her making all the decisions for her, including choosing how much information to give her. I read about 50 per cent and then could read no more.

This sounded like an intriguing premise, but the writing style was clunky at times and I could never really feel connected with the heroine and her journey. The villains were caricatures, very one-dimensional. The details (if I had to read one more reference to Doctor Who or one more coffee shop name, I was going to quit)were distracting rather than character-building. (One reference that especially bugged me was when a character who had never heard of Earth called the hero a Romeo. Really? Never heard of Earth but can make a reference to Shakespeare? Minor quibble, but it really took me out of the story.)

DNF trilogy from NetGalley. I tried, but there are so many other books out there that are surely better written.

This really could've used a stronger edit. There's no value in a play by play of the main character's time. It didn't serve a purpose and wasn't great prose anyway.
