The Marvel Masterworks are proud to present one of the greatest eras in Spider-Man history - Roger Stern and John Romita Jr. 's AMAZING SPIDERMAN. These two all-time greats raised Spidey to new heights while recapturing the compelling tone and character-driven focus that made the web-slinger world famous. Stern and JRJR returned classic villains like the Vulture to the fore, explored a disturbing fate for the Tarantula, told the definitive Juggernaut story and made J. Jonah Jameson a bigger pain than ever before. And that was just their warm-up! This incomparable volume also features the first appearance of Monica Rambeau (A. K. A. Captain Marvel), a mountain of character profiles from the OFFICIAL HANDBOOK OF THE MARVEL UNIVERSE, an in-depth intro by Roger Stern and more! COLLECTING: AMAZING SPIDER-MAN (1963) 224-237 & ANNUAL (1964) 16, THE MARVEL COMICS GUIDE TO COLLECTING COMICS (1982) AND MATERIAL FROM THE OFFICIAL HANDBOOK OF THE MARVEL UNIVERSE (1983)
A bit of a special book for me, this one, as one of the issues it collects was my first ever Marvel comic. Roger Stern and John Romita Jr.’s run on ASM was my introduction to the Marvel Universe, creating a lifelong addiction that probably ruined my life, but there you go.
Highlights collected here include the beginning of Spidey’s romance with the Black Cat, his David and Goliath clash with the unstoppable Juggernaut, the transmutation of the Tarantula and the introduction of the second Captain Marvel to the Marvel Universe, the one-and-only Monica Rambeau. Pure gold, all of it.
Roger Stern begins his well-regarded run on Amazing Spider-Man. Paired with John Romita Jr., these two tell a heck of a story. These tales are well constructed and really capture the right tone of the character.
Previously: Aunt May had a heart attack, but she's feeling better now. She met a man named Nathan at her nursing home and they got engaged.
224 - ★★★★ The Vulture is back. Stern's first issue is good, but nothing special. It's obvious he's an excellent writer though.
225 - ★★★ A murdering vigilante.
226-227 ★★★★★ Black Cat is back. She was only pretending to be crazy and now she's on the loose. Stern writes the best BC! She does have feelings for Spidey and now she's trying to go straight, but a black cat doesn't change her spots easily.
228 - ★★★★ An old man is murdered by spiders and the signal the villain is using to control the spiders is effecting Spidey too.
229-230 ★★★★ Juggernaut is after Madame Web.
231-232 ★★★ Cobra and Mr Hyde. Leeds is interviewing a snitch named Nose who has information on the Brand Corporation. Way too much action.
333 - ★★★★ Jameson offers a $1500 reward for information on the Nose. Peter twans up with Ulrich to find the snitch, but terantula has also been hired to take the Nose out. I always like issues with Ulrich.
334-336 - ★★★ Spidey investigates the Brand Corporation and discovers they're trying to make another Spiderman. The Tarantula gets turned into a giant spider. Origin of Will of the Wisp. Not great. I kept having trouble paying attention.
337 - ★★★★ (Mantlo) Stiltman. An example of how a good author can save a silly storyline.
