I don't know why tragic (as in, truly honest-to-goodness tragic not pandering tragic) elements in shounen action series always catch me off guard, but here we are. This series has a particularly effective one.

I love the story of Imhotep more and more, with each new volume being released and currently this is one of my fav manga series which still is on-going.

The first two chapters were so very thrilling. Djoser showed up, who actually was supposed to be dead, and of course Imhotep had a hard time facing him, considering their past. Those two chapters were mostly filled with action, Im and Djoser fighting really hurt me because they were so close friends and I still hope for the former Djoser to return. That sunny boy, I liked him so much but I fear, even if Im succeeds to annihilate that evil fake god inside of him, he’ll never be the same he was before because of how greatly he’s been deceived... //sobs

During the fight, there was another interesting development: Im and Haru! Until reading this volume, I didn’t care too much about Haru but the huge deal he did Im during the fight and how strong-willed, or perhaps more stubborn he indeed turned out to be impressed me and I came to appreciate him for the important role he seems to play from chapter 10 on. The only development I feel kind of sad about is I wished Djoser to be saved in result but he appears to become the final enemy. Pharao Djoser...! This isn’t even Djoser! //sighs

Another important thing here is Khonsu. I found him odd from his very first appearance and to me it proved I’ve been right not to trust him. He obviously schemes something and I feel as if he plans to go against the gods and the ennead. And he plans to have Im on his side! This might get dangerous for Im but for now I support his decision to defy the gods’ will and his soul destiny! What role Khonsu plays is still to be revealed but I’ll be on alert when he’s around.

Besides, the soul destiny is such an interesting subject to think about. In general there’s the question, regarding every god, does god have a plan for everyone? Or are we free to go our ways and choose which paths to take? I won’t get philosophical but I like that this idea of gods dictating your life, in this case it’s been Djoser’s and still Im’s lives, is included in the plot and it’s the decision Im who’s supposed to be a faithful and obedient priest has to make, whether to go the gods’ way which they chose for him, or to seek freedom from their regime and decide by himself. I think, especially for a churchman like him it’s a huge step and a great development to go against his believes and defy the ennead. And here we witness the importance and power of friendship!... which by the way, is a kind of love and god/ the gods should love the humans enough to let them choose their lives on their own (me, a faithful christian, is talking)

Discussing about freedom, I truly wish for Im to get a happy future which he thinks is not in store for him. After defeating Djoser and the Miasma and when everything else is over, either being sealed away again or sacrificing himself to Haru’s sword, is so cruel and it really hurts to think about it! So, after reading volume 3, I conclude: I don’t only want Djoser to be himself again, I want him and Im to be best buds again! I want them to laugh, be happy, have a normal life and be together!

...but I’ll have to wait for whatever volume 4 has in store. Luckily, it comes in december.

Extrait :

So I went and bought the next one bc :D I love the characters and art too much.

So this was a bit better? We got to see more of Djeser (I know it's Djoser in the English ver I'm just being annoying) and I honestly love the guy, I hope to see more of the magai king and Djoser. There was more Harugo too which made me really happy and more of sad/stressed Im which was godly and we also got to see him smile! My poor heart. Oh and Khousou is great, I think the backcover comic implies his assistant gets off on punishing him for behaving like a weirdo and I WANT TO SEE MORE

I'm still not okay with the pacing, like the gods sent Im to hunt Magais and his staff only has the powers of the magais we saw him catch meaning he only got two and then the gods changed their minds and told him to erase Djeser instead? This can only work if Im meeting Hinome was part of the gods' plan bc it just looks like they made a mistake- unless that's the point? Hmm

The art was good as usually, tho the fight scenes weren't that perfect, there were a few times I wasn't too sure what was happening. It's mostly about Djoser and that's 100% I love him. This series is making me want to fanart really hard
