Splatoon: Squid Kids Comedy Show Volume 1 is a fun, quirky book full of little adventures from the Splatoon Nintendo game. It's quite an amusing ride with really great pictures. Honestly, I adored the illustrations and art styles.

I think middle graders will really like this book, especially those familiar with the game. It's an exciting and interesting ride, and it's super fun!

Three out of five stars.

I got this for my kids to read. They also loved the Splatoon series. Here is what my kids had to say: 9 year old- It was SO funny. I loved it. The pictures are cool. I hope they make more because I loved reading it.
12 year old- I liked the art. The book was just ok for me. It was a lot of little stories. I liked the regular Splatoon series a lot better.

I have not played Splatoon but I do know about it.
Meh. I am not the right demographic for it.

Cover
I like this cover. Smart choice using black background to stand apart from the other series. It is still quite bright.

Interior
Story
Not only is is a "Comedy Show" It's like a one of those booklets videogames came with back in the day describing the controls.
The book is broken up into segments/themes. Most jokes are in three panels which isn't bad. Most Comic strips do. The problem I found was that it runs the same formula for every joke if it isn't making the same joke a couple times a variation of a running joke did make me snicker a little though. But some of them didn't even make sense. Overall I did find the humor a bit disappointing. It's got have toilet humor to the point toilet is the joke at one point. (It's that sort of book.)
I do have to admit having Hit being the out of the box amateur that can hit everything and having Maika as the straight man professional that can't hit the side of a barn pretty clever.

Illustrations
I don't mind most of the illustrations. The Character drawings are cute but I think the expressions didn't always fit the scene. Personally I'm not a fan of some of the overexaggerated expressions but it comes with the art style.

After Thought
Like the book say's it's for kids. I'm a little surprised to say this but it's more juvenile than the main series because I thought that was juvenile enough. Anyone that is an younger and is a fan of Splatoon might get a kick out of it but there isn't much if you are older.

Splatoon Squid Kids Comedy Show is a 4 panel comedy manga by Hideki Goto and it’s based on the Videogame series Splatoon 2 for the nintendo switch gaming system. It stars a pink male inkling named Hit, and a pink female inkling named Maika and features a 4 koma comedy manga style of comedy combined with gags featuring the different Splatoon machinery and armor. The art style feels like a cartoon series like Spongebob Squarepants or Pokémon!

The story is not too deep into the lore of the Splatoon universe, and is mostly about Hit aiming to be the best splatter he can be. Maika serves to be the scolding character and the comedy appears to have manzai reactions, funny faces, and cool Splatoon references. There was also many jokes about ink. This manga does a fantastic job at being entertaining for Splatoon fans, and people who have not played the game.

This manga series is safe for kids of all ages and is funny enough for adults to enjoy as well! If you have a child who loves splatoon, gaming, squids, or if you love these things yourself, please pick up this manga series and support Goto-Sensei! Thank you NetGalley for the review copy!

Splatoon squid kid comedy show volume 1 is a great book. For those who played any Splatoon game, you will be able to identify yourself in the story from when you started playing. As Hit passes through some moments every beginner passed through. So in my opinion is a very interesting and fun book. Really recommend

This is for kids that like Big Nate, Spongebob, etc. It’s comedy sketches in graphic novel format. I think it would make a better show than a graphic novel but I know kids who will be addicted to this book.

Definitely for those who are in the younger age range. Regardless, I still enjoyed reading it and plan on getting vol 2. Good book to read as an in-betweener of more story driven books. Quick and light to read.

This was an adorable manga to anyone who loves the games. It felt a bit like a game tutorial at times, rather than a story so I took away one star. But it did have me laughing outloud multiple times throughout.

My kids are fans of the Splatoon game, so I wanted to check this book out for them. The graphics are very clean and nice, and my daughters (aged 8 and 6) enjoyed the book very much. I look forward to more titles to introduce them to as they very much enjoy the graphic novels and this one kept them engaged.

Cheesy jokes and puns abound in this manga collection of shorts with the Splatoon crew. At times, there were even dad jokes. It isn't one narrative all the way through, it's a collection of short manga stories as part of the "comedy show". I heard some giggles while my middles read this one, but I think some of the humor was lost on me.
