One of my students recommended this book to me. I try to read all their recommendations to give us things to discuss. I like how the cousins become friends. It was a nice scary story for middle readers. For students that enjoy graphic novels more than chapter books, it is an option. Not life-changing or full of terrific themes, but fun, brain candy for students. If it gets them reading, I am all for it!
Allie is not looking forward to spending the summer with her cousin Jen. Allie and Jen haven't hung out since they were really young, and things are even more tense now because Jen's brother disappeared a few months ago. Everyone thinks he ran away, but Jen is convinced that something much more sinister happened at the last place he was seen--the fun house at the Bosco Bay amusement park.
That building, and the whole park, are about to be demolished, and Jen drags Allie along to explore the building and find proof of foul play. They discover more than they could have imagined, including the mysterious ride designer, Mr. Peterson, who has many secrets of his own.
I'm not familiar with the video game this is based on, and I don't think I missed anything without that knowledge. This stands on its own as a well-written horror graphic novel with a lot of action and more than a touch of sadness. Allie and Jen are decently fleshed-out characters, each with their own motivations and struggles. The action was easy to follow, and I can see this pairing well with Black Sand Beach or any of the R.L. Stine graphic novels.

Complete garbage. My 6yo brought this home from his school book fair and I am so disappointed that it was even offered - breaking and entering, inappropriate child/adult interactions, attempted kidnapping, and the murder of a child!!

I would have preferred to read more about the Hello Neighbor guy, and not the main character of this book. I didn't like how the main character was so rude😞. ~ Lizzie😀🎮
Just so-so. A girl helps her cousin try to solve the disappearance of her brother and it turns out the neighbor has a secret. It was middling, like the game, in terms of plot. Sneaking around a couple of times, gathering some clues, and an ending with solid closure and the classic twist. It can’t possibly be canon based on the events, and the novel is actually way better (at least the first one, haven’t read the others), but this will keep kids entertained and pull reluctant readers in with the fast pace and high action.
I thought this book was horrible. It could have been because I don't really like graphic novels or (and?) because I'm not the middle-grade target audience. I didn't like the characters, plot, or illustrations. Had it been any longer I probably would have ditched it and not finished it.
