Collection of seventeen short stories based on different theme and emotion. Stories are fast-paced yet interesting. Every story has well-framed characters. I liked how every story has a different theme and it and ends up with a twist. The writing style and the language of the book is effortless.
Also, The way the author picks every relationship and portrays the characters according to it was remarkable. The book started with Grandmaster's story which was amazing. The best part is, every story has a twist and none of them was predictable. The language was extremely refined.
Overall it was a good read and a short story lover would definitely like it. If you are searching for something light read, it's for you.
The grand master and the other tales us a collection of 17 short stories . These stories relate to the different spheres of modern day society .The stories are well crafted and author has tried to say alot though these stories . The characterisation is versatile which makes the stories different. The language used is matured and the vocabulary abundant . Overall it was great book
It’s quite rare that I find a collection of short stories above average. Kudos to the author Chinmaya Desai for writing some of the finest short stories, of which some were really outstanding. Now I wonder, if I would be able to do justice to the book.
The Grand Master & other Short Stories is a collection of 17 stories. Tales such as Mathematician, Mother’s love, The Grandmaster, Who let the Dogs Out, The Woman in The Yellow Saree etc, taught me something and left me to mull over things, long after I had read them. It was like I was living among those characters and feeling their emotions as mine own. Amazing to see how a simple story can transform our perception.
The narrative of each of the tale was lovely and very engaging. By using quirky, through imagery style of writing in individualistic prose the author enhanced the drawing strength of each of these tales.
What I didn’t like about the book?
A few stories in the book were very disappointing, but the good ones made it up for the disappointing ones. Language was used in the book was okayish. Bit of editing could have done wonders.
Overall, it is a must read collection of short stories, which is a perfect light read and a best companion while travelling.
This book is a collection of short stories which each depict a different idea, & a different moral. I enjoyed a few stories, some were relatable. And, some, came off to me as plain & slow, not so smooth to follow, even though short stories aren't meant to be slow. It was a fine reading experience, with a good quote at the end of each story. I managed to finish it in single-sitting but for me it's a one time read. Overall, different ideas summed up in a fine manner.
‘The Grandmaster & Other Short Stories‘ by Chinmaya Desai is a collection of seventeen short stories. Every story has quite a surprising end. These fictional stories show us different faces of life. These different experiences make this life journey more interesting.
My favorite chapter from the book is “Mother’s Love”. I really like the below lines mentioned in the book and totally agree with them also: “Mother’s love Transcends all boundaries, even death.”
The way author has answered some amazing questions by interacting with the common people is really mind blowing. The language of the book is lucid with some rich vocabulary. The pace of these short stories is fast. Every story ends with a twist. This book is a perfect read for everyone. I enjoyed reading this stories collection. I would like to recommend this book to my fellow readers.
Its raining Short Story collections for me. I am not complaining ;) Lets welcome Debut Author Chinmaya Desai with his Debut Book: The Grandmaster & Other Short Stories. It is collection of 17 stories. Yes, these are short stories which end with a twist if not a bang. But they are written very well. Each ends with a quote from a famous personality or proverb. I liked how it sort of ends with a singe.
I enjoyed reading this book. I kept it on hold for a long time. I am regretting that now. Sorry Author Chinmaya Desai. Short & crisp stories. Each ends with a twist or a bang. Also love the quote or dialogues to mark end of story.
Each story is compact yet descriptive. They are written on myriad topics. The language used is a good and a lot of thought has been put in the stories about human psychology.
The language and story flow are very important in a book. Debut Book having these qualities is a good sign.
I laughed at the smart way to include your own name in the story, Chimaya Desai. Like Subhash Ghai's cameo appearance in his movies ?? I was looking for those appearances in most stories.
The stories are so real-life. It felt as if your friend is telling you about a neighbor or something he/she heard. I was also trying to find connections and how the Author must have first thought about these stories. You have to read the book so you understand what I am trying to say ??
The stories make you sigh, grin or introspect. Each a good one. I cant pick a favourite. But the first : Grandmaster is truly the Best. I also loved : The Foreign Trip, The Politician, The Woman in the Yellow Saree. The other stories are great & must read too.
Pun and Point Blended Well! The Grand Master & Other Short Stories is a collection of short stories, artfully blending human emotions with its tales. The tales take a comprehensive resource from real-life excerpts even in its meticulous description. The backdrop details that carry the story are remarkable.
The narration on the detailing of the ever-winning fate, the hostility towards togetherness, the disingenuous native-born human attitude, the crucial exploiting thoughts in times of dire need, the common liking that resulted in adopting an orphan and the contentment after bequeathing a will of sheer nothingness by property, the hard-hit understanding on “love at first rescue” and the brilliancy of any wife to hold back the love, the adoption of ideas, and not to miss, the smartness of the Woman are in perfect touch with reality. The contemporary ideology on student community or on fashion-driven teens and the presumed notion of the aged on those was tenderly penned. Sarcastically, a story also stated that on the requirement of labour to shower love on humanity and surrounding community.
To sum up, all the emotions true to life are equally sprinkled.
The punch line after “The End” is dynamic to the content it tends to deliver. Of the 17 featured tales, The “…chess addict of narcotic proportions” and Who Let The Dogs Out!” are my favourite. The former had a hobby to end his inactivity and became a pro; the latter had a splash of humour favourably in mind voices.
Words will only dilute my admiration. 🦄🦄🦄 The Grandmaster and Other Short Stories by Chinmaya Desai is a collection of 17 short stories each ending with a twist. From a Grandmaster who seemingly decides to lose a match intentionally to a man who could but didn't, the author We get to see a few celebrity mentions in various stories, as well as the author himself in a couple of them. Some of the stories in my opinion fell flat (the twists at the end which are supposed to be the highlight just didn't make sense or click) but most of them were very enjoyable and amusing. My Top 3 stories are: 1. The Carrot 2. G Male & 3. The Woman In the Yellow Saree The purpose of this book is based on the famous saying 'Never Judge A Book By It's Cover' which it does accomplish. Each story ends with a quote befitting to the particular story. One thing I didn't like was capitalizing the endings in certain chapters as if to say, "DID YOU GET IT? THAT'S THE TWIST." In my opinion it was a bit unnecessary but that's just from a personal point of view. 🦄🦄🦄 Overall, I'm a huge fan of short story books and I enjoyed this a lot. Rated 85/100. Melina L.
Chinmaya Desai's debut work, The Grandmaster & Other Short Stories is a collection of seventeen short stories. Each one of the stories is unique and has a twist in it.
The very first story in the book is 'The Grandmaster'. It is about a chess grandmaster who is accused of losing a World Championship game intentionally. Some of the stories that I liked are - 'The Inspiration', 'G Male' and The Carrot. Each of the stories ends with an interesting quote.
The stories are written in simple and easy language and are fast-paced. There were twists in the stories, although the endings were quite predictable. The characters were well portrayed and the narrative style is quite simple. It is a short read and can be completed reading in a few hours. However, there are certain things which I did not like about this book. This book lacks proper editing. There are a few grammatical errors in the book. Certain parts could have been much better. Also, the use of block letters to highlight certain parts was completely unnecessary.
Overall, The Grandmaster & Other Short Stories is an easy and light read. Beginners and people looking for some light reads can give this book a try.

These stories revolve around a chess grandmaster, a politician wishing to save the ravishing Seria Valley, the inspiration where a brigadier Manvinder “Hyena” Singh plans to surprise a civilian and many more such life stories have been scribbled.
A fictional tale of “Ordinary” people answering some extraordinary questions. All the characters were well identified. I liked the way every chapter ended with a quote. The writing style was simple and lucid. The read became more interesting with a twist in pace and it kept me hooked till the end. The title itself was the very beginning of the book. The read was too short and can be completed in one sitting. Overall it was an interesting fiction read.
'The Grandmaster and Other Stories' by Chinmaya Desai, is a series of short stories, 17 to be specific.
Short stories are a blessing when one wants to read something but doesn't want to invest too much time or emotions in a book.
This book proves to be a light read, with short stories on varieties of different topics and different characters and different perspectives. Although, just because they are short and fast paced, doesn't mean they fail to convey the emotions or ideas author requires readers to feel. 'Hounds of Bhaskar Villas' and 'Husbands Guilt' are some of such stories in the book. I loved 'the stroll' and how they "distributed" their sorrows.
Although written beautifully, some of the stories were not concluded properly, like 'Husbands Guilt'. The story took me to the end but it felt like I was left stranded, with no conclusion whatsoever. Barring that factor, it makes up for a good one time read.
Ø “In my entire life, there is only one game that I have lost on purpose.”
Ø “Never talk to strangers.” – My grandparents when I was 3.5 years old
Ø The third chapter would be a good contrary story of Arjun Reddy. A loving story, if ur loved one tells you something just do it.
Ø People often talk about the younger generation as if they didn’t have anything to do with it.
A complete pack of wonderful stories. The first chapter was the best in the book, and that was the boost that drives you into the book. A very common, light, a feel-good book to read.
The message narrated in each story was somewhat common, but the narration style is brilliant.
Like I said, a wonderful book.
The style of writing kept easy and simple, so this would reach all the audience.
To conclude the book will be one of my favorites and would be a great free time read.
The grandmaster & other short story by chinmaya desai were a collection of total 17 chapters each story ending with interested twist. The most engaging thing about the book is the quotes given at the end of the each story.
