175📱🇲🇻THE MALDIVES 🇲🇻 Apparently “murders in the Maldives” is a genre. Who knew? Luckily I love a good potboiler, and this ticks all the boxes. It’s easy to read, great characters, choice settings and lots of plot twists. Devoured it. I’m looking forward to the next instalment @sanchitasarin 🕵🏽#🌏📚#readingworldtour2021 #readtheworld #worldliterature #readingworldliterature #reading #readingwomenchallenge #readersofinstagram #readmorebooks #bookstagram #booklover #book #booknerd #bibliophile #travel #travelogue #fiction #nonfiction #nonfictionreads #travelbooks #ayearofreadingaroundtheworld #maldives #maldivesbooks

The perils of goodreads.com. I like mysteries and this one had high ratings, so I bit. I did not notice the low number of reviews, and am suspicious that some of the high ratings were registered by friends of the author. Despite the 3.57-3.90 ratings (the book is listed twice on goodreads), this is a one-star read which I raised to two because I actually finished it.

There is an echo of Agatha Christie here. A dozen people are on an isolated resort island where bad things end up happening. Lots of them. About half the guests have been up to no good when the smoke clears. I ended up having little patience for the overworked plot, and found the solutions to the murders surprisingly uninteresting.

There is a pretty flat cast of characters. The narrator is a personal assistant named Reece Oberoi (a name I found annoying, somehow). It took me quite a few pages to realize Oberoi is male. As a guy, this person seemed female in attitude and expression. The major failure in characterization, though, relates to criminologist Devin Langhar, who is to be the star sleuth in a series to follow. Langhar is phlegmatic and flat as a literary figure. He has almost no personal attributes, says little, usually has a blank expression and utterly lacking in the charisma to carry a series forward.

Unfortunately, this book could have used a better editor. Here are a few examples of grammatical errors or florid style All are from the second half of the story.

-- a character is described as "punctuating the strings" of a guitar.
-- "the two women incapacitated me."
-- "...all of the things that had scared me was present in this room."
-- "...other people's private diary."
-- "..the word murder hung around me like a putrid stench."
-- "None of these vehicles have been used."
-- "his six feet frame."

And finally, a personal peeve. Jeffrey Dale is 68 years old and is repeatedly described as "ancient." I found the ageism here offensive!

I feel a bit badly for being so negative, but I just can't find any reason to recommend this book.

Such a fun read! It kept me on the edge of the seat and I couldn’t stop turning the pages until I was done and trust me it quite a rewarding investment. You will be forced to burn the midnight oil to solve the mystery behind Jeffrey Dale’s death. And you will be introduced to the new detective on the block, Devin Langhar. And I cannot not for the next instalment to the series!!!

An exciting murder mystery that keeps you hooked from the word go. The description of the resort island in Maldives and the events there in is quite detailed.
Detective Devin Langhar comes across as an expert on human behavior.

I needed a book associated with the Maldives for my reading-around-the-world project. This book served that purpose but really only because of the title. The story could have been set at any beach resort anywhere and little, if anything, particular about the Maldives was included. Too bad for my purposes but if you're just looking for a simple murder mystery, this is an okay read.
