His Fake Prison Daddy

Rate this book
When eighteen-year-old hacker Elias Stuyvesant ends up in a maximum security state prison, he's woefully unprepared despite his time in juvie. On day one, he's thrown in with a man known as the Santa Fe Slayer, Ambrose Hughes.

Hughes is quiet, disfigured, and weirdly urbane. Elias was so young when Hughes committed his crimes that he has only the faintest idea what Hughes is in for. However, Hughes makes clear that Elias is his ideal victim type...and there's no one to protect Elias from the much larger man with his prison-jacked body and that hard gleam in his dark eyes.

Whoever paired them has it in for Elias; that much is obvious.

Elias is terrified of Hughes, but he soon realizes the other prisoners are worse. If Elias is going to survive, he'll have to choose the lesser of the evils: To preserve himself, he'll need Hughes for his Daddy. And given Hughes's skewed morality, they'll have to fake it till they make it.

"I'm Elias or Stuyvesant, or, you know.. whatever."
Hughes stared at him, dark eyes glinting dangerously in the low light. He cocked his head to the side and said, "Maybe I'll call you bitch. Do you answer to that?"

first of all, i laughed at that title. please tell me i'm not the only one. i just can't seem to take it seriously when i started this. well, it turns out this book is one big nice of a surprise. i loved it! i wish i could say from start to finish but that didn't happen here. when the romance started to roll in, it was over for me. first we have elias stuyvesant a talented hacker at the age of eighteen. the fact that he went from juvie to maximum security at fort connor adx, new mexico, shocked him. a full blown curiosity on how he ended up here. on the other hand, we got ambrose hughes, the santa fe slayer aka the cannibal aka elias' new roomie. he is heavily scarred and disfigured. together, they must fight their way to survive prison life. first step: hughes taking elias' as his pretty boy.

"You love this fucked up face, this fucked up brain. You want this don't you? Want my fingers and my cock, want to be shoved up against this wall and taken until you scream for me. "

swoon levels for this one was pretty damn high and hot freaky sex between hughes and elias were the main factors why i'm giving this the perfect rating. i was expecting some wishy washy light of a prison romance and i definitely got more than that. other than the romance, there were a lot of other shenanigans that happened in this story. turns out elias, now in max security, discovered some sketchy shit while in juvie and now assassins in this prison are bound to get him. swooped in hughes to save him with an exchange only of becoming his boy. as a bdsm reader, it wasn't really bdsm which was obvi but i just need to point out to clear things out because people might expect. the 'daddy' and 'boy' are in titles only! i was a bit disappointed but again the title already warned us. i love how on the surface level this book looked like how the big bad guy saving his love interest but turns the latter saves the former too.

You won't forget me. I'll teach you pleasure, beloved, and when you find it again, I'll be there in echoes, etched in your bones, carried in your blood.

oh my god. the dialogues between the mcs killed me too. especially the things hughes told elias while they were fucking and/or romancing each other. shows so much love, devotion, and possession. i must admit it got a bit freaky.... and i still loved it. their last sex scene together was disturbing and i loved it. please don't judge me! Lol. last i swear, the fact these two established their own bookclub in their little room solidified my rating!

He found himself filled with morbid fantasies of Hughes eating him after he died, but instead of being afraid, he wanted that. He wanted to be part of Hughes, to nourish him.

last concern: cannibalism. i was expecting, i guess, a full blown on-page cannibalism. i saw someone mentioned in her review that this book contains cannibalism and that was the selling point. i'm not into cannibalism (who is??) but the fact that it is one of the themes got me intrigued. more of references or hints of hughes past but not a real depiction of cannibalism. some scenes got freaky but i'm not sure if those were cannibalistic acts?

Okay, people, I'm outta here. This freaks me out so much.
I totally get the Phantom of the Opera vibe that this story has in spades, but can he be something else than a cannibal?! This freaks me out so much. Unless someone tells me this is a huge misunderstanding and Hughes is actually in prison for something else, I'm kicking this to the curb...

Omfg Elias won’t stop cracking me up!

Ambrose is fascinating; intimidating surely but surprisingly sweet and caring in his own roughshod way. Not surprisingly intelligent and makes it out like he’s temperamental but stays in line. (At least thus far)

I can quickly eat my words about him staying in line; he’s extremely volatile but each time had been to protect Elias.

I know it was already said how sweet and emotional this is but that still doesn’t quite prepare you for just how sweet and emotional the relationship is between these men.

The backstory as to how Elias ended up in a super max security prison is interesting, adds a lot of intrigue. I’m impressed with the writer’s knowledge of technology. Although I’m an idiot in that regard so I wouldn’t know VPN from a hole in the wall.

Ambrose Hughes may be a cannibalistic serial killer but he’s one of the most romantic characters I’ve ever read. His words are reminiscent of Lord Byron and Robert Browning.

And then there’s the way that Elias loves him, unconditionally and without reserve. He loves the good, the bad and the ugly, inside and out. Overall a gorgeous whirlwind of a romance.

I genuinely think I read a different book from everyone else because what the fuck even is this? Did everyone get paid off to leave a good review and I missed the boat? The following is a collection of what the fuck moments I had while reading this absolute hot mess.

- Elias immediately can excuse murder and cannibalism, no questions asked
-I get fake it till you make it but there was no faking needed for this man Elias was ready and willing for that hot serial killer ass
- With all due respect Hughes was out here putting his life on the line for a twink he met maybe 42 hours ago like damn bro are you that whipped already?
- Elias telling Hughes mid-makeout that he wants Hughes to EAT HIM and they are both hot for it
- I know that blood and cum mixed together would not taste good stop lying to me
- Hughes killed and ate people because he has schizophrenia (this is honestly insultingly inaccurate)
- All prison guards are evil and want to rape Elias why???
- HE ATE THEIR DICKS
- Elias used the word deflowering
- Cannibalism being way overused as a metaphor during sex
- Why is Buzzfeed an integral part of the plot??
- Alright who let the Mexican gang in here and gave them control of the prison
- Elias uses the word dickmatized
- Elias gets free and goes to Mexico to work for the gang for some reason?
- WHAT DO YOU MEAN ELIAS HACKED THE ENTIRE PRISON AND HUGHES JUST RAN OUT AND IS FREE NOW??????
- They live happy ever after in Mexico and Hughes never kills anyone again because medicine can cure serial killing or something now he just drinks Elias's blood to get the thrill in

I actually have no words for this book, I have honestly never been more absolutely bamboozled in my life. I finished this book fueled by pure spite. If I ran across the human version of this book in a dark alley I would fist fight it to make myself feel better. I'm going to do my coloring books to try and reset myself after whatever the fuck this book put me through

This book was so unexpectedly good and that title does not do it justice!

Seriously, ignore that title. There is no fake about anything that happens here. There are some light daddy/boy vibes, but it’s mostly just the two MCs using the terms and prison protection. It’s actually really cute and not overdone. I can’t believe I’m using “cute” to describe this book, but I am and it is. I still can’t get over the fact that I think a book with a serial killer MC is cute and that I felt sympathy for him. Let me repeat that:

This book made me root for a serial killer!

I’m impressed. Everything about this book was so good. The prison drama was interesting, I loved both MCs, I was invested in their relationship, the sex scenes were amazing, and I liked the ending! I feel like I’m usually disappointed by book endings and I didn’t even know if I wanted a HEA or for someone to die. I’m happy with what I got and I’m pretty shocked by that.

TW: serial killer MC, murder, violence, little bit of light blood play

…everybody so creative!!!!

i can’t even rate this, i’m still stuck at “i can excuse cannibalism but i draw the line at nazis”, sir i’m sorry you can excuse WHAT exactly?????

they fell in love too easily. i can justify the killer, that’s not even remotely close to being the weirdest thing he did in this book.
but elias?? girl, that man killed and ate several people try to have at least some concerns for fucks sake

Mind-blowing good. It had everything I craved in a prison book with a vicious serial killer and a boy someone wanted dead.

A strongly written story, sharp sentences that cut souls. Amazing captivatingly put together.
There are so many thick emotions it was just overwhelming.
They were needy, craving, all-consuming, passionate and full of compassion in an environment that was raw, dark, gritty, violent, hurt and much more.

“The Santa Fe Slayer.”

Elias is a petit, endearingly honest and transparent, almost innocent sweet boy who excelled in hacking computers. Locked up in a tiny one-person cell with Hudges, the most dangerous prisoner who bites faces off.
When Elias understands, he turns into his fate he will be killed by Hudges' hands or mouth.
Little does he know.
Hudges is impressed by this young boy who isn’t afraid to show affection.

There is a gruesome tale and the storyline does tell it with decently consumable portions.
With of course everything on the wrong side of a decent life still no one is never just one thing, there are more sides to everything in life. When life only takes and gives you nothing... what are the chances.

A lot of sensuality against a lot of violence.
The story is sweetly romanticized but stayed consistently strong and dangerous and oh my freaking goodness I loved that so immensely hard!
I think this story is a huge addition to my top shelf.

"I would kill to protect you. I’d die to protect you. You’re mine, and I’d do anything, baby boy—anything at all—to have a chance of deserving you."

We have 18-year-old Elias, who ends up in a maximum security prison and cell mates with a cannibal and convicted killer, Ambrose Hughes. His crimes do not match his punishments, someone wants him dead. Ambrose is serving a life sentence after he killed and cannibalized victims; he’s an infamous killer. He’s had untreated schizophrenia and ASPD. He hasn’t had a bunkmate in a long time after the last one ended up well...in a not-so-good situation. Elias fits the looks of his victims perfectly, but soon, the young man manages to capture his heart, and his goal becomes ensuring his safety.

They both realize they’re pawns in a bigger game with their lives at stake. They only have each other, and Elias feels protected, giving into Ambrose, and Ambrose finally finds someone who loves him for him - his flaws and all.

There were worse things than being fucked by a goddamned legend. One of those worse things would be to be murdered and eaten by him, but right now, Elias just wanted to think about the good, the way that, in this moment, he was occupying all Hughes’s thoughts, making him hard, making him hurt others.

Still, there was something irresistibly sexy about lying here in Hughes’s strong arms, tangled up with him as Hughes pinned Elias’s legs to the mattress with one heavy thigh. Their bodies fit together so perfectly, Elias dwarfed in the best way by the larger man.

This book was much sweeter than I expected. It took awhile for me to get into the story. I'm not sure why but it wasn’t until 30-35% that I started to really enjoy it. I’m not going to lie I was close to dropping it but glad I stuck with it. I really came to adore the MCs and became invested in their HEA.

I loved how Ambrose adored and wanted to protect Elias, even if it meant the peaceful existence he carved out from himself in prison was disrupted. He never trusted anyone after being betrayed in life but decides to give in to Elias. He knows Elias is meant to be outside and with someone who is better.

“You’re mine. Your life is mine. I’d kill anyone who even thought about hurting you. I’m your weapon, Elias. I’ll do whatever you ask of me.”

“I won’t hurt you, pretty boy, not like I hurt the others. I’m not… I mean, I’m still crazy, technically, but I’m not out of control now. I know what I’m doing, what’s real.”

“No one’s ever really loved me but you. After Roger, I don’t tolerate liars. I know what I look like. I know I’m crazy, too. But I’ll do anything for someone who loves me back.”

He’s still a dangerous man no doubt but I adored how possessives and proactive he was of Elias. He was also willing to give him up and set him free so he can have a life outside. Even if it meant he will never see him again.

I also loved Elias’s devotion to Ambrose. He wasn’t just thinking of himself but worked hard to ensure that they could have a chance outside together.

“You’ll have me to keep an eye on you, to make sure you’re getting your meds, and we’ll be fulfilling your life’s promise as best we can. Get you to become a doctor, even if it’s sort of off the books unlicensed. But you can help people. That can help you pay penance better than sticking you in a hole can.”

I would say there isn't much Daddy Kink aside from the usage of the word. I also wish we could get a look into their life after escaping but overall I enjoyed this book

I have no idea what made me read this book. I've never been into prison romances and I really wasn't a fan of the cover. I told myself I'd read the first chapter, probably laugh, and just move on with my life. However, Elias Stuyvesant happened. It wasn't just Hughes, aka the Santa Fe Slayer, who was captivated. I, too, fell under his spell. He was just so timid and cute and funny... how could you not want to protect him? I have no idea why the title implies that there was some fake Daddy somewhere because Ambrose Hughes was most definitely Elias's Daddy and nobody could tell either of them otherwise 😌.

Ambrose Hughes was a famous serial killer known for murdering and eating his victims. He was being held in SHU, or a solitary confinement unit, in a maximum security prison. There was no reason for 18 year old Elias, previously in juvie for hacking, to be assigned to share a (tiny) room with him unless someone wanted him dead.

Throughout the story, I was constantly reminded that Elias was only 18 and that Hughes was his first love. He completely lost himself in Hughes, becoming so enamored with him that self preservation went completely out the window. He offered himself up to Hughes willing, going so far as to tell him that his life belonged to him and only he had could chose when to end it. He even fantasized about Hughes nourishing himself with Elias's body after he passed away. It was all so very romantic 😆🤭. To be fair, these words were said after Daddy protected him from a few attempts on his life.

Hughes, for his part, never had anyone love him he way Elias did. He had to get used to it and learn to accept it. I felt somewhat claustrophobic listening to their desperate confessions of love to one another in that tiny cell. It just didn't seem large enough to contain all of it. Plus, I kept telling myself it was all so futile; that even if Elias made it out of there alive he'd never see Hughes again. I actually cared about these characters and desperately wanted them to have their HEA.

3.5 “cannibalism say what?” stars

(age gap, daddy kink, prison love, cannibalism, suspense)

“But I’ll be the first, Elias. No one else will ever take that from us. And you’ll remember me, the real me, when all I am to anyone else is the Slayer.”

So I'm going to borrow Layla's brilliant Q&A review format because I really don't want to write my usual boring ass, long reviews. Besides, this type of review is probably easier on the eyes.

Q: Is it worth reading?
A: Hell yeah! Just for the sex alone. The daddy kink, dirty talk, smut, all of it.

Q: What about the plot?
A: An 18-year-old hacker jailed in maximum security with a cannibalistic serial killer because somebody wants him dead? Just a tad OTT me thinks.

Q: So that cannibalism thing. What's that about?
A: Don't worry. None of it happens on page. Numerous references are made to the serial killer's signature MO, but nothing gory is depicted.

Q: What's the deal with the hacker and the serial killer?
A: There’s great UST and buildup in their relationship. Ambrose, the Sante Fe Slayer, and Elias, hacker, start off as friends. Ambrose is very protective and saves Elias’s life when multiple attempts are made to kill him. He doesn't force himself on Elias, but pretends to be his daddy to protect him from other prisoners. Elias is both intrigued by and attracted to him, and initiates their relationship. Ambrose never imagined that he could meet anyone who would see him as anything but a monster. He adores Elias and is both sweet and possessive.

Q: Does the writing leave you wanting more?
A: Temper your expectations folks. It won't win any literary prizes. Sometimes the dialogue is stilted and it can also veer into corniness. Ambrose gets sentimental when overcome by…ahem…lust. But, and this is important, the dirty talk rocks!

Q: Anything that really ticked you off?
A: Yes. The representation of schizophrenia. Ambrose is schizophrenic and the book implies he committed his crimes because he was ill, undiagnosed and unmedicated. This is an insult to people with schizophrenia/mental illness. Serial killers are psychopaths. Period. Mental illness is stigmatized enough and representations like this don't help.

Q: What's your final verdict?
A: I have no regrets reading this. Would I reread it? Doubt it. But give it a go if you like prison romance and daddy kink.

“Mine.” Hughes pushed his fingers more deeply into Elias, teasing him inside until Elias flexed and writhed. “Mine. All mine. My love, my beautiful boy, my Elias.”

.·:·.☽✧ 2.8 stars ✧☾.·:·.

imagine if Elias was a vampire 🧛‍♂️. just take a minute to visualize that. when Elias bit Hughes' neck and drew blood, I immediately imagined him as a vampire. damn what a plot twist that would be. then, instead of the current title this book has, it could be named

~ "Vampire Prison Love" ~

actually, scratch that. maybe that's why I'm not an author 🙇‍♂️: I come up with horrible book titles. on the bright side, one thing that isn't horrible is this book.

if I'm being honest, the title doesn't do it much justice because the novel has many great qualities: enjoyable characters, a passionate romance, and a crazy 🥴 story. it was a little difficult to keep up with the story at times because there'd be too many things happening at once, and I felt pretty detached from the characters as a whole.

oh, and I'm pretty sure there was some heavy foreshadowing around the reason why Elias was even put in prison. I kept reading the story because I wanted to get the answer, but I never got it. obviously someone wanted to kill 🔪 Elias, but I could've figured that out myself. I wanted to know who is trying to kill Elias, and why. but alas, I never got my answer(s).

aside from the issues I had with the novel, I enjoyed the story overall. for some reason, the detachment I felt from the story as a whole made my rating pretty low, considering the wonderful qualities this book has. although this wasn't exactly for me, I'd most definitely recommend it to someone who wants a chaotic and steamy read with dark themes 🖤.

4.5⭐ for the story, because it's badly missing the very crucial and needed epilogue, but I'm rounding it up to 5⭐, because this is a really, really good story.

This book was recommended in M/M Recs group on FB, where I usually get my reading ideas from, and even though the title is silly and you're thinking there's a heavy D/b dynamic going on - none of that is true.

🟡 Prison romance
🔵 Forced proximity
🔴 Age gap of at least 25 years
🟣 Size difference
🟡 One MC is a virgin
🟢 One MC is mentally ill
🟠 No D/b dynamic, although they ocassionally call each other that, but it's due to the environment they're in
🔵 Fake relationship-to-love
❗ TW : Murder, violence, rape, cannibalism (only mentioned)

The story is about Elias, an 18 year old orphan kid, who's a hacker and came across some data he shouldn't have seen while he was in juvie. Because many people and their money depended on that data to stay secret, they threw Elias into a max security prison.

This was my Elias. He's short, blonde, blue eyes, funny, innocent, special. He's a virgin and he's gay, doesn't have any family or friends, is completely alone in this world.

He's put in a jail cell with Ambrose Hughes, or The Slayer, as they call him.
Hughes used to kill his victims, slaughter them, freeze them, and also eat them. He killed them because they led him on and made him believe they loved him or weren't serious about him . It's said later in the book that he was a med student and very good at it, but he got sick - schizophrenia - and didn't have it treated until he came to prison.
He was a foster kid, in and out of the system, alone, abandoned, disfigured and scarred by a fire he was in when he was a child. He's had a terrible life and did terrible things and everyone in prison is very much afraid of him.

This was my Ambrose. He's in his late 40's, with long dark hair with a little bit of silver, one half of the face hidden and scarred. Has multiple burn scars all over the body also.

When Elias is put into his cell, everyone expects for Ambrose to kill him , since he's done it before, but things take a different turn .
Elias is different. First motivated by the need to survive, but slowly getting really attached to Ambrose and developing deep feelings , these two become a real couple . For Elias, this is it, he's in love, they're both a different kind of crazy and Elias decides to just surrender to it.
They go through all kinds of hardships together and in the end Ambrose helps to get Elias out of prison.

Here we have this mentally ill killer, who's finally found someone to call his own , he's immensely attached to Elias and would and also does kill for him, but at the same time, he's letting him go .

At this point it's safe to say I very much liked the depth of their connection , despite the gruesome details.
You might call it sick, and it probably is to a certain degree, but that makes it very unique and very long-lasting, it transcends their physical lifetime .
They both talk about it being so all-consuming, they'll be connected even in death.

As characters, they were both very memorable and developed and I enjoyed every interaction they had. Would I want more of them together? Absolutely. The sex they had was very intimate and the spice was really good.

Their reunion on the outside of prison walls was spectacular. I couldn't even imagine how these two were going to get their HEA, but they did, and it was amazing . The whole journey to their freedom and finally living as a couple was amazing and even though there's a thought at the back of my mind saying this is a convicted killer and Elias is just 18, their relationship is so unique, special and mature that I had no doubts even for a second that they were going to make it .

The only thing that had me literally screaming was no epilogue!
The story is definitely not over, it's not finished, this book badly needed a very long epilogue or even a second book!
I wanna hear about Ambrose finishing med school, about them living together, navigating their relationship and experiencing life, I want to hear about them getting married and getting old together , this book definitely shouldn't have ended when it did.

❤️I absolutely loved this story. I think Ambrose is the kind of character you think about even 5 years after you've finished the book and you're getting coffee in the morning and he just pops into your head and stays there, an utterly romantic killer that just wanted someone to love him .

Whew! The mild cannibalism thing almost freaked me out, but I can't stop reading! There were a lot of violence in this book but there were also sweet and romantic moments and this was surprisingly low angst. I would have like it even more if it wasn't instalove since I eat slow burn stories for breakfast! It was fast-paced, it kept me captivated from the very beginning. Although there were a few unrealistic parts, it doesn't bother me that much, the high quality sex scenes were scorching HOT! This is the first book that I've read from these authors and I enjoyed it.

A bit dark but gripping

So you know those prison books where it turns out the inmate was framed and didn’t do anything wrong? Yeah, this is not that book.

I’m actually pretty impressed that the authors got me to root for the unlikely pairing of an 18-year-old hacker in over his head and a vicious serial killer (who, okay, maybe isn’t AS bad as you might think). I wouldn’t exactly call their relationship healthy, but hey, it works for them, and it was pretty darn hot to boot. I enjoyed it enough that I’ll be checking out other books by them.

I debated reading this bc I did nottt want that title on my record 🤣 but I was bored and couldn’t find anything that interested me and I just wanted to read. And maybeeeee I was insipired to read this bc of The Freshman by Louise Collins, I really recommend that book!

I did dnf this bc I got bored. It’s an ironic loophole really, reading something bc I’m bored and abandoning a book bc I’m bored🙄.

The couple were a case of insta love. It was so severe that the mc was already calling the other mc his daddy by day 3. 😬, yikes. Although I did appreciate the research the author did for the book!! I was surprised when the author mentioned Chicanos and Anglos. Most authors would probably just say “Mexican gangs” so, kudos to the author for correctly identifying the race! And for actually explaining how the main mc was hacking instead of writing something like, “his fingers flew across the keys and boom, he had access”. What can I say? I’m a sucka for factual plots🤷🏻‍♀️

I recommend even though I didn’t finish 😂 not my particular cup of tea but it was alright nonetheless.

Edited to add: someone has brought to my attention that the mental health rep here is not great. For that reason I probably wouldn’t rec it to others, but am leaving up my previous review.

Tags: prisoners, forced proximity (only one prison cell), daddy kink, age gap, serial killer MC

This book was something else. I can’t quite decide what to make of it. I can say that it was fascinating, and despite some pretty big plot leaps (be prepared to suspend disbelief!) it was an engaging book. Hughes (the cannibal serial killer MC) was obsessive, protective and sweet. Elias (young hacker falsely imprisoned with Hughes) was wonderfully snarky and devil-may-care.

My biggest complaint is actually the lack of CWs. There are some pretty big things going on here that won’t be for everyone, and I can’t find a comprehensive list anywhere. So here are mine:

Kink: daddy / boy, some blood play
CW: drug use (weed), mental health (schizophrenia), description of past abuse, talk about cannibalism, prison violence (some explicit), prison gangs and factions, convicted serial killer MC

Definitely a book with shock value. I didn't hate it, but over all the plot didn't grab me super well. I loved the prison aspect but definitely had a hard time moving past why the one hero was incarcerated, despite the explanation. Entertaining, but not a reread for me.

Best prison romance book so far imo. Don't let the title fool you, this one's got the perfect dynamics, intensity, and boiling steam. Not a single boring page.

What a pleasant surprise! I've never read this author duo before and for a title that resemble a kinky porn header, I didn't expect the story to be so good.
It definitely satisfied my daddy and prison kink, but this story is so much more than the smut presented. The characters are so well developed that they have me falling for a serial killer!
Elias is a 18 year old hacker who get into a supermax prison with a serial killer as his cellmate. First thing that came to my mind was, why is he even in a supermax prison?? Something is definitely wrong and part of the suspense was about Elias and Hughes trying to figure out the reason Elias is here.
Hughes is our anti-hero, the serial killer. There is nothing innocent about him and he doesn't possess a heart of gold, but he is such a good Daddy, who take care and protect of his boy.
Hughes is definitely a violent psychopath and I might be worry on Elias behalf if I didn't see that they both are match made in hell.
There are a lot of violence going on in the prison and the evil guards are horrible. There are enemies and allies abound and Elias needs to learn who to trust.
I actually feel that romance between Elias and Hughes pretty epic. They love each other fiercely, is like till death do they apart and they will incinerate everyone that gets in their way.

Elias is eighteen years old and he’s in juvie for hacking. One day he angers the wrong people and ends up in a max prison. His new cell mate is a serial killer, Hughes, and Elias seems to be his victim type.
I don’t want to say more because I don’t want to spoil it and because half the fun was trying to figure out what’s going on and if I could trust Hughes.
It was a really good book. Interesting and thought provoking. Well written and with unique characters. It reminded me of Orange is the new black, only really really darker.

I received an ARC of this book for an honest review.

This was filled with tender moments, albeit with a side of canabilism. The title and cover of this do not do it justice. This is not the cringey porno that these suggest but is rather thought provoking and oddly romantic, in a messed up kind of way. There was certainly many wtf moments here but I was captivated by the story. It could easily have been longer. I’d have loved it to have gone into more depth, with a slower development of their relationship and less daddy/boy stuff but it still worked in a lighter way, maybe because I didn’t take it too seriously and just went along for the ride. I was getting bored with endless bland hockey romances and it definitely shook things up. I would have loved an epilogue!

Think of this as a retelling of Beauty and the Beast set in that tv prison series Oz.

i'm not gonna rate this book because tbh i didn't really attempt to read it. i found it while browsing on audible and noticed that it was narrated by "virtual voice." in other words, an ai read this book.

look, i'm all for accessibility options and i think ai has progressed to the point where human-sounding voices replacing screen readers is really, really cool. but i'm repulsed by the idea that someone would profit from its use by choosing to presumably spend a chunk of money on one of those services that offers ai voices for a certain amount of reading time/words read instead of hiring a narrator. it's fine if you can't afford to hire a real human to read your novel as a self-published author, but then you just... don't put your book on audible?

it's not like this book is the sole perpetrator of this ethically bankrupt cash grab, either. they're ALLLLLLLL over the audible plus catalogue. i just so happened to select this one to try out because i wanted to hear a robot man describe ott gay sex to me.

and on that front? hoo boy, ai has not progressed to the point where it can provide the needed emotional range to deliver lines like "roll over, get your knees up under you, and spread your cheeks for daddy" with any kind of, uh. believability. so why even do this?? it kind of defeats the entire purpose of the medium. sigh.

i'm just tired of this blatant ai shit. i'm tired of ai-generated covers and dead-voiced ai narrators and the insidious creep of ai-produced writing. do whatever the fuck you want with ai in the privacy of your own home, but for the love of christ stop profiting off the work of the people who these models were trained on that never gave their consent. it's gross.

I loved this book so much. Elias was so sweet and I loved how he fought for Hughes, that tiny ball of strength. Hughes was so bad to literally everyone but he was soft to Elias ans I love that. They were so opposites but were really meant to be, they met in a very inlikely way because they really did have to. I really the whole fate thing, they were so perfect together. The book had dark aspects yeah, but you can't stop rooting for them no matter what

I wouldn't have picked up a book with this theme on my own, but a friend recommended it, and the Amazon sample seemed well written.
