Robyn Russo owns Big Eazy Beignets, one of the oldest and most popular beignet diners in the city of New Orleans. Robyn has spent over forty years feeding New Orleanians - the good and corrupt. As a result, she has learned how to love and fight. And when the city threatens to wipe out the stretch of Tchoupitoulas Street that has served as home for her business and other small businesses so that high-rise condominiums can be erected, Robyn dips into her bag of tricks to stave off the prominent city vultures who are spearheading the effort. Her efforts seem to have worked, until she drops dead in her own establishment in front of a crowd of customers. The case falls into the lap of young hotshot Homicide Detective, Lizzy Silverman. As usual, she has to turn to her secret mentor, Sleepy Carter, for assistance in solving the case. But Lizzy doesn't have to poke and prod Sleepy for guidance on this case because Robyn Russo was an old friend of his. That's great news for Lizzy and the worst news for whoever killed her.
I throughly enjoyed the Sleepy Carter mystery books. I would really loved to see what Sleepy and Lizzy gets into next. I read all 4 books back to back and just like gentrification I believe the literary arena has similar issues but for me who is an avid reader I search for books that keeps me wanting to stay up at night and find out what’s next and the Sleepy Carter books did that .I hope Mr Smith can bring himself to write book 5 .
Loved this Sleepy Cater mystery set in New Orleans. Great job by Mr. Smith in setting the plot and possible suspects from the beginning. Enjoyed the mentor and mentee dynamics, the subject of post Katrina gentrification, and homelessness being included in this entertaining novel. Mystery and emotional mayhem worthy of five star ratings.
For over a year, I sought to only read African American female mystery writers. In each generic search, Author Brian W. Smith would appear; of course, him not being female, had me scroll pass his treasure trove of writings. I'm so glad, I stopped scrolling and started reading his character, " Sleepy Carter". Each book gives me a panoramic view of "The Big Easy's" native son tours. Sleepy Carter former Police Detective, knows the lay of the land, the owners of said land, along with a love of the city. Baffling crimes may stump his mentee "Lizzy" but before her career with NOPD is over, every officer will know Detective Elizabeth Silverman's name. Like a good mentor, Sleepy teaches Lizzy all the tools she'll need to solve the murders that stump other Officers and Detectives. If you like a good "who dunnit", this series isexactly what you need to read.
New Orleans happens to be a favorite place to visit for me. Being a native of the Big Easy, the author paints a very vivid picture of the city while allowing readers a chance to intimately get to know Lizzie Silverman and Sleepy Carter.
Lizzie and Sleepy are an unexpected pair, but their mentee/mentor relationship is at same time mutually beneficial. The unlikely pair draws readers further in further in with each new installment to this series.
Brian W. Smith never disappoints with the Sleepy Carter Mysteries.
This is my second read from Brian Smith and I must say that I have thoroughly enjoyed both books . I like the twists and turns he uses to tell the stories. He builds the characters extremely well to give you the feeling that you are right there in the scenes he's describing. I was hoping to see discussion questions at the end of this book for my book club book review. Looking forward to reading more of Brian Smith's books.
Sleepy Carter is still mentoring his only student, Liz. Post Hurricane Katrina, New Orleans has become gentrified and things aren't the same for the inhabitants. Under his tutelage, Liz is learning more about investigating crimes in hopes that she can solve her parents murder.
I must admit - I am late to the party. This story is an absolute WIN. I feel in love with the cover and title. I realized half way in the novel that this is part of a series. I am excited and looking forward to reading the others. #cillasbookmaniacs
This book was a great read. Loved the plot and storyline. I am enjoying this series. I like the author presented this story. I’m glad Lizzie broke up with her boyfriend. I am interested in seeing how this story will play out.
Brian W Smith showed out with this one ☝️! This started out with a slow burn and ended with a blaze of fire 🔥! I would love to read more about Det. Silverman, Det. Hollis, and Sleepy! lol
Lizzy is on a roll. I love how Sleepy is making her a better detective. This series has been such a great read for me. Not sure why more people haven't read it.
Read another who-done-it from the author Brian W. Smith. It was based in Nawling's where Sleepy Carter continues to be a mentor for Detective Lizzy Silverman!
