At it's core there's a cute wholesome story about a boy and his slimes helping people. However this story was "otakufied" and it kills vibe that this story had at all.
First the world is a game. There are stats listed out to the people, skills and what level they are.
THere's the fact that Ryoma is just super good at everything even archery. His history is of course martial arts or whatever is needed to make him OP for the occasion. (self-insert super OP power fantasy)
Long waxing info dumps about spells as if they were written in a gaming manual.
Next we have a group of kemonomimi beast girls for no other reason that wank appeal. While they aren't too sexualized in the words, the art has their clothing sliding down to reveal cleavage and the fact that the only male beastkin is a bipedal dragon man. They really aren't adding to the story at all other than being wall decoration.
Next we have the love interest that's another kid, but remember Ryoma is 39 in a kid's body, that wants a cleaner slime because girl.
Most of the words in the book are info dumps of slime skill, spell lists, random descriptions and other things that don't advance the plot in anyways. The only thing that happens is that Ryoma saves the Reinbachs/harts? Goes to town, gets tested (passes 100% of course), joins the guild, cleans up Miya's (she's a cat) place, cleans the sewers. That's it. While it would have been a nice adventure without the otaku gaming stuff, it's kind of an annoying slog having to stop and info dump skills and other things all the time.
There's also a part where Ryoma (as a 10 year old kid) works 3 days straight of overtime and nobody really says anything other than "don't overdo it". It's treated as some kind of achievement. Gross.

Overall a cute story buried if otaku gamer crap.

This is just what I needed - light, fluffy, while away an afternoon whilst the weather is terrible reading. It's a typical OP Isekai novel; but here I never begrudge Ryoma is powers. He just seems to be floating through life just happening to have the right skill at the right time, bringing good fortune to the "good guys" (kind of like Ishmael in Quarter Share)

Don't read if you expecting a deep and detailed plot to make you think. Great for de-stressing :)

Watched the anime, it was ok and I liked it just enough. Decided to pick up the light novel because I had a feeling that there may be more to the cutesy and wholesome story in the anime and I was proven right.

At it's core, it is still very much an isekai slice-of-life that I enjoy, but I felt that the novel had more to tell, and had slightly more grit beyond all the cuteness of the anime. Ryoma had more depth portrayed, and there was more content than the anime chose to adapt. Only grouse I have is that there were too many overlapping voices when it comes to conversations, and it was very hard figuring who was saying what.

Overall I very much enjoyed the start of this series, and probably will continue on with it.

A cute, quick read. The change in the main character's lifestyle makes me curious as to what happens next. However, the trope of skills being leveled like in a video game draws me out of the story.

I might pick up volume 2 if I happen upon it at the library.

Ryoma was an overworked salaryman who received an offer to be sent to another world after his unexpected death. With the support and blessing of three of the new world's gods, he sets out to live a retirement-styled life in the woods, where his daily life consists of gathering food and researching slimes. Then an unexpected encounter with a group of people sets him on the path to rejoin the world at large.

This is a more slow-paced, slice-of-life novel, but I love it precisely because it follows the sort of man who thinks nothing of spending years by himself simply because he's interested in what he's doing and it never occurs to him to actually go out and do something else. He's not exactly smart (although he's not stupid), and his dedication to following his own interests leads him down a lot of paths ordinary people find hard to understand.

I'm also fond of his warm relationship with the various gods of his new world. They need him simply for the transfer itself, but they're kind to him, and he appreciates that and responds to it. Ryoma also continues his relationship with them as well as he's able once he's given his new life, which starts gradually drawing the interest of even more of this world's gods.

This is echoed in the kindness of the family that ends up more-or-less adopting him. Their relationship is full of misunderstandings of Ryoma being this horribly abused child (which, technically, may not entirely be wrong, but it certainly isn't what they're thinking), but their response to this is to support him in every way they're able.

So if you're in the mood for a comfy novel with a harmlessly obsessive protagonist, this is a great read. I rate this book Recommended.

It's not the best isekai manga, but it's still pretty entertaining. The premise itself is that this old man is reincarnated as an overpowered young boy. Instead of being a hero, he started living an isolated life along with his companions, which are evolutionarily tamed slimes. I was interested in seeing how he developed alone.

I started to lose interest once they convinced him to come to the city and live with the duke's family. It started to lose attention to the progress of the slime and focused more on developing side characters. I will continue to read it, but I hope he doesn't fall in love with either the duke's younger sister or the new cat girl. I think it'd be weird, considering he is an old guy in a child's body. The best option would be to not include romance.

I would recommend it as a quick read. It would also be good for a reader who isn't familiar with the concept of isekai and game dynamics.

I've been reading almost on latest volume and I'm pretty disappointed there was so much potential and I was really excited cause the first volume was really good but it just keeps going with no major plots ,no romance,no time skips no excitement it's just too plain it's not to late the first 5 vols can be a slow burn but please start putting more thought into the major plots and romance and rivalry your such a good writer I'm looking forward to how it goes Its good so far but most light novels dont have alot of Vols and your already at 5 so please make the next 5 really open up the excitement and keep the foot on the peddle

Alright.

I'd give it 3.5 stars. The supporting cast is honestly a bit lacking, at least in this novel. And the choice of names are too generic and having multiple family members with essentially carbon copy names makes it difficult to keep track of events. I'm personally convinced even the author (or translator) might have muddled them up on at least one occassion, if accurate then what hope does the reader have?
Finally... Nothing really happens. I know slice of life is an approach to writing, but this seems beyond that to me. Dissappointing.

By the Grace of the Gods was a new book series that I wanted to start as a part of my August reading goals. I bought it from the cover art which is beautiful and I’m glad that I enjoyed the novel as well. It’s a wonderful cozy read to add to your collection. It was a fast read for myself as well. I think I finished this book in about 3 hours.

Plot and Story
By the Grace of the Gods follows our main character Ryoma who has been reincarnated into another world. Instantly upon reincarnation he meets 3 gods of that world who give him a backstory and reincarnate him as a 10 year old boy.

Without getting into much spoilers, he makes a new life for himself by doing things he enjoys compared to overworking as he did in his previous life.

Characters
The characters in the book are all loveable. I’m going to compare it to Ascendance of a Bookworm because it doesn’t have any anti-heroes, challenges or even difficult characters. I think this creates a wholesome story, but I’m looking forward to some conflict within the series.

Although loveable, no character really stands out and they all seem to fit an archetype so I didn’t remember anyone’s names. We have a fox girl, rich guy, rich guys daughter the same age as Ryoma, guildmaster and slimes. LOL

Setting and Atmosphere
Its the definition of a cozy read and so its a quick, fun and easy read. I found myself halfway through the novel in no time. There isn’t really much around the world and I’m hoping we get to it in later volumes.

Writing Style

The structure for the story is very simple and easy to read. After starting this I realized it would be a good bedtime story to read for my little ones before bed. The perfect story to just escape from the problems of the real world with no real problems of their own.

There is no major conflict or problematic characters in this volume. While this made it a wonderfully relaxing story to enjoy on a Sunday with a cup of tea, I can’t see the story continuing to pull my interest. We will need some conflict to keep things interesting.

Overall Enjoyment
Overall it was above average, but not good enough to recommend with high praises. It does have the potential to be a good series. I would have to read more volumes before I can recommend the series, though.

If you’re new to light novels you will enjoy this series. If you’ve read quite a few, it’s still enjoyable, but more of a cozy read.

I will preface this review with the fact that this is the first lights novel series I'm reading and only because I absolutely love the anime series. This fact I will readily acknowledge has skewed my rating.

Given that I love the anime and want more, I wanted to support the creators efforts and see what the source material is like.

If I were to have just read these without the context of the anime, this book would have been a huge flop for me. The main reason is the writing style.

The writing is mechanical and not well formed. For example the dialog is hard to follow because there are frequently scenes with multiple characters and you have to take time and sometimes guess who is saying what.

Then on top of that the way the main character is portrayed is very much like a machine taking in analytical data and spitting out responses. This is not how the anime makes me feel.

I'm not sure if this is how the original work came across or because of the translation?

Given this alone I would have stopped reading after this first book and given it probably one or two stars. But again, because of the anime I was much more engaged. I wanted to know the details of what wasn't or couldn't be included in the show. With that as my main focus and goal this really does pay off.

I will continue to read this series, but I would not have done so without the anime.

By The Grace Of The Gods: Volume 1 by Roy.

Honestly, this book is fairly enjoyable. There is just enough conflict to keep this slice of life theme from suppressing the world building. I always feel that too "happy, go lucky" novels are too unrealistic and just spend all my time being too pessimistic while reading. (Except in the cases of my favorite mangas.)

I was initially concerned that Ryoma's interest in slimed would become repetitive and trying on my patience. However, the author managed to add so much intrigue to such a simple concept. Making me even excited to discover what new evolutions may come about in this reincarnated fellas life.

Ryoma is so ridiculously OP. He's disillusioned himself into thinking that the somewhat lax response to some of his skills means he's not too beyond the scope of what contains 'average'. But I think he's completely disregarding the simple fact he has yet to show anyone his entire skill sheet. 😉

The translation while very good, in that there weren't too many moments with missing , was still fairly stiff throughout the entire book. Not much of a demerit, in itself. But paired with my already considerable predisposition towards slice of life themed works culminated in a 3 star review.

Would still recommend.

4.5 out of 5 stars

This is a wonderfully relaxing isekai that still has the familiar feel you'd expect from one, but sets itself a part from the rest. It's not focused on combat, getting stronger, or some big mission or quest. It's the story of a man who's had a hard life, and got reborn into a magical world and is living his first life with happiness in it.

This book was a pallet cleanser for me. The relaxed story line, high quality art, and overall feel of the story was dang near perfect. I only took a half a star off because since I read so quickly, part of my requirement for a perfect review is that I can picture myself in the world far after I've finished the story. And this one, while I could technically, I didn't feel any attraction to the idea. It's your basic, classic medieval-but-slightly-not fantasy world. That and the characters, while consist ant, didn't feel fleshed out enough aside from MC. But don't get me wrong, it all fit very nicely within the story itself.

A nice story

This is a pleasant story about a middle aged guy reincarnated as an 8 year old kid in another world. He is overpowered, has the good fortune to become involved with a kind family that is rich and powerful and all of his challenges are too easy. The author saves the hard luck 'rl' stories until the end of the book which brought the mood down and in my opinion were just more of the overworked and abused Japanese social commentary that should have been left out from my western perspective, but given the frequency they appear in light novels probably have their place for the original intended audience. 4 stars because this was a pleasant light and relaxing read overall.

One of my Favorite web novels

This originally started out as a web novel when ended too soon. Eventually that web novel got a reboot, then this light novel adaption came to be. I am so happy I am finally able to start collecting the Light novel and soon the manga as well.

No matter how many times I read this story, in its various formats, By the Grace of the Gods never fails to make me smile. I hope one day it gets a proper anime adaption that isn't a gimmick to sell more novels. It deserves many seasons.

I highly recommend this series to anyone who likes a soft, light hearted Isekai that's more world building and slice of life than anything else.

Boring and sad story

The cover art was cute so I was expecting a cute story with funny adventures. The story line was a familiar trope but the characters and adventure were boring. The main character was a nice guy who led a terrible life of neglect and abuse by his family and society and then he died. His life in the new world isn’t as abusive but it’s just as sad and pathetic. The afterward gives insight into his life but it’s so sad, I wish I’d skipped it. I was expecting a light comedy but got a depressing story about a reclusive victim.

This is a comforting story that will make you feel that you are loved. Every character of this story is kind and diverse. It is very detailed which adds to your imaginative view. Also, every chapter is exciting to read since it has adventurous scenes and different information about the another world and monsters residing in it. I hope new readers will enjoy this. Please be patient since this is a slow verse story but it is really worth it. You will know how it is good then you keep tapping or flipping to the next page. Read lots!

Story: Much better than the Anime, things make more sense when explained and the progression makes a lot more sense. I still hate the GIRL character and the CAT meowing, I wish they will remove those annoying character. However, I know they are part of the "manga" troupe. I'm glad that at least so far there is no interest from Ryoma on the girl which is something I did not enjoy on the anime version. After all, he is a 40 YO male, despite the fact he is reincarnated in a boy's body. Onto my next adventure, Happy Readings!!!

It was interesting for a book, I bought on a whim. A business man from Japan, dies in his sleep and gets sent to a Medevil world with Magic. He gets to keep his knowledge, but in the form of a young boy. He is also superpowered with Magic, but ends up using it for good. I liked the parts where we stays with the kind noble family. There is also hints as to why the gods favored him, with all the Magic power. My guess is he is being trained to fight something bigger in a later volume.

Interesting and safe for any age.

It's not bad. I kinda like it, so I'll give it a 5 star, just because I've read so many of these style types. I actually prefer the more violent stuff, but this ain't bad at all. It's about as slow as the unwanted undead adventurer with the same good guy style protagonist vibes. I'll see how long I stick with it, but it's good. It's a safe read for any age.

This is a great chill series. I've seen the anime and read some of the manga, but the books give you much more and I love it. The author does a good job at world building in their books. And I don't know if Disney but with more adult topics is a good comparison for this series but, I think the more lighthearted fantasy vibe with a strong and brave main character gives me that kind of feel reading these books.

I'm loving the slimes

I love this story. The background of how he died was especially funny. In a genre overrun by truck kun... It's nice to see something different.

I'm digging the misunderstandings that result from his innocent comments about his past life. I will definitely be getting the rest of the series.

Tranquil and Calming

I really enjoyed this book. It's a slow story about the main character that slowly progresses in very satisfying ways. I found feeling myself better as the day went by and imagining having a cute little familiar.
Definitely a book for readers that can appreciate the calm and family.

Great!!!

Another Isekai that has me reaching to buy another in the series. I especially enjoy the personality of the main character Ryoma. I have purchased the first four books in the light novel series and am all caught up on the anime which is what got me interested to begin with.

If you want to read a book that brings a smile to your face give this one a read.

what a great series

So while reading the first book which I think I’ve read before… But I hadn’t purchased yet I realized I really enjoyed it again very very much and if reading it twice means that I love it then I just went ahead and purchased the entire series all 12 up-to-date… Cannot wait to delve deeper. Really love the authors construction of the story and the characters.

Reading this because the anime was super cute and I was sad that there are only two seasons. This book only covers a couple episodes (iirc) so I'm excited that there is still a lot of story to go even just for what the show covered. It's a cute and cozy litrpg style story of an OP/isekai'd now-boy and his inifnite helper slimes, surrounded by super lovely people.

An outstanding book

This book was exactly what a lite novel should be. It had a great mix of charictor development, skill and world building, an amazing story line, and many funny/heartwarming moments. I cannot wait for the next and have already preordered it.

It's a good book

This is a good book but it is not for me. I do not enjoy books from one person points of view. It is ok to have a main character but like to read about the world and what is happening in it.

Looking forward to the next volume

A light novel with a slight change to the Greene. The concept of being blessed by the gods is a nice twist. It provides another look at being reborn in another world. The story is truly enjoyable to read and progresses at a pleasant pace.

Simple, enjoyable isekai fluff. The protag is OP, as per usual, but not as obnoxiously so as in most other isekai, and basically just wants to live quietly. Nice slice of life stuff when you need to relax.
