Having been infatuated by the Norse tales of Vikings, and having recently watched Vikings the TV series, I was excited to dive deeper into the legend of Ragnar Lothbrok. Sadly, this book left me wanting more.
At just 57 pages, it offers only a brief, simplified account of the myths surrounding Ragnar — more of an introductory pamphlet than a proper exploration of the man, his sagas, and his sons.
Readers already familiar with the show or with basic Norse history won’t find much new here. It touches on the well-known beats (his raids, his rivalry with kings, his eventual fate) but doesn’t linger long enough on any of them to feel satisfying.
If you’re a complete newcomer wanting the barest overview, it might serve as a quick primer. But if you’re hoping for depth, context on the sagas (like the Ragnarssona þáttr or Gesta Danorum), or genuine analysis of how history and legend blur in Ragnar’s story, look elsewhere.
A disappointing read for anyone hoping to go beyond what the series already covered.
