You Are Magical: magnifiqueNOIR Book 2

Rate this book
"It's all fun and games until you question the magic." Our favorite magical girl squad is back for their regularly scheduled program.

Kind of.

After the last colossal battle, Marianna, Bree, and Lonnie are trying their best to recover, but the daily monsters don’t give a lick about self-doubt and personal struggles. Fortunately, Prism Pink is there to lend a hand, turning the trio into a courageous group of girls who can take on whatever threat comes their way.

There’s just one they still don’t know who Prism Pink is or where she came from.

In fact, where did any of this come from? The monsters. The magical powers. What does any of it mean? It’s time to start getting answers, but are the girls ready to hear the truth? Knowledge is power, as they say, but power is fickle and can be corrupted so easily. After all, Blaze never said what happened to the previous generation of magnifiqueNOIR, did she?

At the age of nine, like most kids, Briana Lawrence had a dream. She wanted to be the best “WRITTER” in the whole wide world. Her fourth grade class laughed and wondered how one hoped to become a “writer” if they couldn’t even spell the word. Back then her stories were created with crayons and construction paper. As she grew older they progressed into notebooks and colored ink pens of pink, blue, and purple. When she lost her older brother, Glenn Berry, in a car accident, she stopped writing.

Dreams, however, have a funny way of coming back.

Before she realized it she was grabbing her notebook and pens again. She would write stories that ranged from high school romance to her imagination running wild with the likes of Goku, Vegeta, and the other characters of Dragonball Z. This continued throughout college where she would always end up writing about the space exploits of the pilots of Gundam Wing and other works of fan fiction. Soon she realized that she wanted to do more than that. Her head was full of ideas, full of original characters and worlds that she wanted to share with others.

Thus, she stepped into an English Major with some Women’s Studies on the side.

She graduated Iowa State University in 2006 and moved to Minneapolis with her partner. Here, she tried to get into graduate school, but things didn’t pan out the way she wanted. She ended up working retail, her dream becoming buried by Black Fridays and other busy times of year. Once again, however, that dream returned. She went from immersing herself in geeky fan fiction to actually writing about the geeky things she loved for several anime and video game review sites. However, it was her discovery of National Novel Writing Month that made her go back to creating her own characters and plots.

Now, here she is, an author in the writing world.

The young women of MagnifiqueNOIR learn a secret about the original troupe and their mentor that shakes them to their core. I enjoyed the camaraderie between the girls, the romance, and the drama in this novel. The art was wonderful. Bree's personality is starting to wear on me a little, but the cast is large enough that I'm hoping it'll bother me less going forward.

So many emotions in this second book! The magical girls are finally getting answers about their power's origins and their group's history but the more they learn the harder it is to keep the peace. Relationships are strained, trust is broken and with dark pasts and hidden secrets finally coming to light the biggest threat to magnifiquenoir may be closer to home than they realise.
The plot is evolving quickly and its many twists have left me on edge. I love an unpredictable story and this is one of the best I've read in a while. The world Lawrence has created is steadily gaining in development and draws you in with every chapter. I can't wait for the next book

Just read the end of this book and now I wish I didn‘t read it yet because now I need to know how it continues. I love how the Story evolves, I love the references, I love the characters. And this sudden feeling of „all the hints have been there all the time and I didn‘t see THAT coming“. Can‘t wait to read more of magnifiqueNOIR! Meanwhile I‘ll stay in fangirl-mode a little longer.

Finally, I got to this book! I read its predecessor in 2022, and bought this a few months later.
At first, no doubt because of the amount of time it took me to get to it, I had a few issues remembering who everyone was. Once I got that sorted out, though, I was thrilled to be along for the ride. I didn’t intend to finish this book in almost one sitting, but I kept turning the pages, one after the other… I needed to know what was going to happen next! The lore and character relationships were balanced really well, in a way that neither were dumped on me, rather, it all flowed naturally. That ending though… I have Many Thoughts about that ending!
This is not a perfect book, but I only have two things I didn’t really care for. One is minor, and I could’ve just been imagining it - I don’t remember constantly being bombarded with fandom stuff whenever Bree existed in the first book, it felt more realistic then. Maybe it has to do with this book being shorter? Not sure. The other is that, sometimes, there’s a lot of dialogue at once, to convey excitement or people talking all at once, and it’s difficult to tell who’s saying what. Which may be the point, in which case, ignore me lol.
All in all, I’m glad I read this book and I’ll be recommending it to my friends 🥰

Ok! This one was much better than the first one. The plot felt more flushed out and consistent and the switching of point of views was not so jarring. Getting some of the background of the old group was so rewarding. I’m a bit disappointed about the cliff hanger just because it seems like she’s pivoting on the series in terms of making it a graphic novel? So I’m like is the third book even in the works anymore? I thought she did a fantastic job with the sequel. There were still like 4 typos but it didn’t detract from the book as much as it did with the first one. I will definitely read the third one if she ever releases it but I do think it behoove her to make it a graphic novel rather than mixed media. I enjoy how she diversified her book but I was yearning for a graphic novel style read. That being said I much preferred some of the other artists styles of art over her own so I would hope she would maybe get assistance for the art of the graphic novel. Some of her own panels were hard to follow and just not the quality I would hope for. I love supporting black femme queer artists though an I wish her all the success in the world.

I'm dying. I am drad.

How did it END THERE?!

OK. Seriously, I adore these books. Book 1 had me hook, line, and sinker, and this one took it that much further. The story and characters are leveled up, and the mystery behind the group has me dying to find out what happens next. Still a love letter to the nerdy heart and anyone who has ever felt 'other,' the story deepens in this book in all the best ways.

Loved it! I really enjoy the the writing style in this series, quirky and makes me feel included, like I could be in the kitchen dancing to Powerline with the girls or chilling dropping pop culture references with Bree (a woman after my own heart). Now to eagerly await the next installment!
