The author aims both to give a realistic and intelligible account of the scope and content of the subject and to provide a foundation upon which anyone who wishes to take their studies further can build. He begins by asking certain questions that arise within morality - about conflicting duties, egoism and altruism, guilt and responsibility - and goes on to consider more theoretical, philosophical questions about the logical status of moral judgements. Most of the main types of contemporary ethical theory are critically surveyed. A final chapter applies the findings of the earlier ones to questions concerning the relations between morality and science and religion.
