Translation Criticism- Potentials and Limitations

Rate this book
This is an English translation of Katherina Reiss's contribution to translation studies. Her work first appeared in 1971 and this translation shows more clearly Reiss's treatment of a central theme in translation: how to develop reliable criteria for the systematic evaluations of translations. Using varied examples, the author offers a pragmatic approach to text analysis, a functional perspective on translation and a specific view of the translator. The book covers important aspects of the translation process such as the text, the conditions which determine the translator's decisions and the translator as an individual whose personal interpretation has to be respected. This translation has much of the original presentation, but with the changing terminology some has been changed to make it more accessible to today's reader."

A classic on translation criticism offers also many insights into translation studies and touches upon translation theories, which might be, due to the time the study was written, somewhat underdeveloped and out of date, but still useful, as they are presented from the point of view of a translation critic. A must-read for everyone who is preparing to analyze and evaluate a translation for the first time.

A bit outdated information, but that is with many books regarding translation theory. Yet good for evaluation of different theories that was and should be developed.
