About the author

Haven Cage

Haven Cage lives in the North Carolina foothills with her wonderfully supportive husband and two temperamental rabbits. She’s rolling into “midlife” while working in the medical field and savoring her favorite things. You can usually find her spending way too much money on coffee, gardening, learning about herbal medicine, progressing her spiritual life, or writing.

She’s always appreciated the Arts and loved drawing and painting in her younger days. However, a few years after becoming a mother, she sought out a different way to express herself. Haven wanted something to cultivate who she was as a woman and as an individual—outside of life as a mother and wife.

Though she wasn’t much of a reader growing up, Haven fell in love with wordsmithing and soon found the love of books she didn’t have in grade school. Writing and reading offered a way to work through dreams, emotions, and trauma, all while allowing her to nurture and develop a newly found piece of herself.

Over a decade has passed since putting her first novel words to paper, and Haven still enjoys creating gritty stories you feel to the bone.

Audiobook Review
4.5 Stars.

Falter is book 1 in the Faltering Souls series. The book is told in first person POV of the main character, Nevaeh. Notice that the name is Heaven spelled backward. I was wondering from the get go if that was meant to be foreshadowing. Very clever.

Falter was my first experience with this author. I really enjoyed the author's writing style and flow. The words she chooses are so pretty and thoughtfully put together. She has a very poetic way of explaining things. I really liked how the story kept building upon itself and evolving all the way through. I will absolutely read this author again.

This book is about 23-year-old, homeless woman, Nevaeh. When she was a young child and her parents had died, a homeless man named George found her under a bridge and took her in. He raised her and protected her and essentially became her father. The beginning of the book is really just showing them as a homeless family and what their daily life is. Soon, they both get a job at a cafe ran by a man named Gavyn who says he just wants to do something nice and help them out. Then everything takes a turn, Nevaeh starts to see, hear, and smell things that she cannot explain and then she sees George's soul get taken by a demon. This leads us into the story of angels and demons and religious discovery. Nevaeh learns that she is celata and is part demon and she needs to make the choice to join the light or the dark, God or the Devil. But before she can make the choice she has to figure out how to save George's soul and get him back from the demons. She has the help of Archard, her guardian angel.

Even though this book has a lot of discussion about angels, demons, faith, humanity, spirituality, heaven, hell, god, and redemption, it was done in a way that didn't feel like bible thumping. I am not religious and can get turned off by really preachy books, but this did not feel like preaching, just a fantasy story. I think atheists would be able to still enjoy this book just fine as the work of fiction that it is.

Ultimately this book is more of an urban fantasy type genre, but there was also mystery, suspense, horror, sexuality, and the start of a romantic interest/potential love triangle. I loved how much was included in this book.

The only real negative feedback that I have is about chapter 9. It confused the hell out of me (no pun intended) when it began, and I restarted it a couple of times, re-listening to the end of chapter 8 with it. It picked up in a totally different place and scene and I had no idea how Nevaeh got there. Then chapter 10 picked back up where 8 left off. As it turns out it was a premonition, which is actually the title of that chapter but since all of the chapters were titled, I didn't realize it was literally just a premonition. The whole thing felt out of place and pulled me out of the story. There needed to be an appropriate lead in to explain the premonition. The premonition finally made sense at the very end of the book but up until that point, I thought it was just a random chapter that didn't fit.

Fair warning, this book ends on a cliffhanger. Thankfully, the rest of the series has been released so it will be easy to just jump right in to book 2. It looks like this is the only one on audible right now though. The others are only in print.

The only other thing that I want to mention is a very brief scene involving animal cruelty, where Layla, the mean girl in the book, threw a cat against a tree. Animal cruelty is pretty much my only hard no when it comes to reading so I am mentioning it in case others like to be prepared for those scenes as well. If that is too much for you, just fast forward like 5 or 10 seconds once Layla takes off her shoes at the fountain and the cat walks up.

Let's talk about the narrator. She was INCREDIBLE! I absolutely loved this narrator. Her voices were fantastic, and she had several distinct voices. Her male voices sounded male and female sounded female. Her pacing was great and she spoke clearly. She also did sound effects and did them in a way that they didn't pull me out of the story at all. It all fit together very organically. Usually I'm not big on sound effects but I think they added so much to this story. It was perfect. I liked the narrator so much that I searched her to see what else she has done but it looks like this might be her only audiobook. Hopefully she continues as the narrator for the rest of this series and does more in the future because I hope to listen to her again with other books too.

I absolutely recommend this book. I am so happy to have found it and also found a new (to me) author to explore.

It took me a bit to collect my thoughts to write this review. I am not sure what I was expecting when I read this story but I wasn't expecting what Haven wrote. It was deep, heavy, thought provoking, and consuming. I'm sitting at work and itching to read more in this story. I will first say if you are squeamish this might not be for you. Haven has a vivid imagery about her story that is unlike any I've read. You could see, smell, and in some cases taste what was happening to Nevah.
Nevah is an enigma of a character. She has so many puzzle pieces and not all the clues. It's like slowly fitting together the story of her life into this one masterpiece. She tries to make sense of it all but only manages bits and pieces. Struggling with reality, heaven, he.., and who to trust she carries the weight of the world on her shoulders.
Gavyn isn't my fave. I'm OKAY with that. I love that an author can make me dislike or be leery of a character. I hope in the second we learn more about him, but I was very cautious towards him during the read. I'm not quite sure but he rubbed me the wrong way haha.
Archard was just as much a cautious character for me as Gavyn. I found myself not trusting or liking him either. I'm sure Haven will change this in the second for me but I'm loyal to Nevah and feel like she's been misled by both characters.
I feel like I could go on, but the truth is this powerful read is something you have to check out for yourself. It will have you thinking, feeling, and screaming in the same page. I cannot wait to start the second one to see how it all ends. This is a cliffhanger so be warned but you don't have to wait the second is out already.

I seriously love this series. I've eyeball read everything available in ebook, but the end of Falter still killed me! The narrator did a beautiful job, despite a couple of production problems, like weirdly long pauses. I really felt connected to these characters, even more now they've been given voices. I may have to reread the rest of the series if the audiobooks aren't going to be out soon. Neveah and co. are everything good protagonists need to be. There's tons of strife, crappy luck, and awesome sidekicks like George. Everyone should have a George in their lives. All in all, I would definitely recommend to PNR readers everywhere. Loved it!

I need a shot of whiskey and a holy blessing after that ride. Wowzers. Haven Cage delivered a heart stopping tale of Heaven vs Hell. Nevaeh's emotions emanated from the story. I feel like my heart has been shoved through a wringer. And that ending!

Lucy Zukaitus' sultry southern voice ensnared me from page one!

Boring and inconceivable plot, flat, one dimensional characters and all around awful. I tried to finished it but I wasn’t able to get through it. It made no sense.

3.5 stars!! This book is not one I feel I would normally read but I did enjoy it.

This author did a phenomenal job with character development and had good writing skills. The book was never confusing (and this subject to me can be up in the air). I enjoyed the main character, Nevaeh. I rooted for her and Gavyn but also for Archard. I loved her relationship with George and I can't wait to find out what happened with her parents!!

This book is a take on Satan and God. It also touches on many other subjects. This book felt like it could be a 5⭐️ book but it dragged a lot.

WOW! I couldn't put this book down. Neveah is a strong lead female character. I really enjoyed reading about her and her life. I loved the relationship her and her "father". Anytime I thought I had the book figured out or thought I knew would come next there would be a plot twist I didn't see coming! Books about Angels and Demons aren't normally my go to book BUT I loved this one! I cant wait until the next one comes out! Keep up the good work Haven! You wont be disappointed with Falter! PS: Can we get a book with Gavyns or Archers point of view PLEASE? lol

An amazing tale

Oh my, it was so interesting and the plot twists were never ending, I knew something good was coming when i realized nevaeh's dreams were coming true. The battle between demons and angels never seemed so harsh as this one, liked it so much. I'm hoping to see how nevaeh story continues later on.

I had the pleasure of beta-reading this one, and I really enjoyed it! Not only was it intriguing, and a little steamy, it also had some particularly insightful passages about the relationship God has with angels, humans, and the free will He has given them. All in all, it's a pretty great read, and you should definitely give it a try! I can't wait to read the next one!

Neveah Roberts has lived on the streets since she was young, living with a hole in her memories of her family and how she ended up on the streets. A fellow street bum, George, adopts her as his own and provides for all her needs. The two come upon some luck one day with a day job that turns into so much more that it will change Neveah forever.

Neveah and George have had a hard life before hitting the streets, and after, but they have always had each other. When Neveah begins experiencing what she thinks are hallucinations and horrific dreams, she starts to think something is seriously wrong with her. The job that George secured for them at a local cafe was no coincidence, and is the beginning of Neveah’s true journey. The struggle she deals with runs much deeper than her place in life, but with her core beliefs, and whether or not she can deal with the truth. Neveah’s character is really tested to the limits, which forces her to face her fears, doubts, and regrets. I rooted for Neveah to come out on top, but with each passing day, someone or something would knock her back down. She kept getting back up like the energizer bunny, whether or not from pure ignorance or stubbornness I’m not sure but she has spirit! The supporting characters in the story are all an integral part of Neveah’s journey, and from my perspective fail her on an epic level. The fumbling and secrecy was ignorant and uncalled for. I can not say for sure right now if I actually liked any of them, the verdict is still out.

In the end I was left unfulfilled. This story was written well, but just wasn’t my cup of tea. The story took on a very “Lifetime drama” for me, and the lack of sex just frustrated the shit out of me! We had “almost sex” about a dozen or so times in the book, which made it even worse! I know this isn’t a romance, so expecting an HEA in a dark urban fantasy is stupid, but hell and a cliffhanger to boot! F*@$!

Great beginning.....and there's more to come.....

FALTER, the debut novel by Haven Cage and the first in her series Faltering Souls, was an unexpected surprise for me. I went into this book totally blind, having not read the blurb or any promotional material.

FALTER is Nevaeh Richards' story, the story of the battle between good and evil. Nevaeh enters a world inhabited by demons and Guardian Angels that have turned to the wrong side of righteousness. Not only does she have that to deal with, she is also battling to hold on to the little faith that remains within herself.

Haven Cage has presented a wonderful story to begin her series. Her vivid descriptions and incredible ability to write such an amazing world drew me in from the very beginning. Her character development is strong and very well thought out. Nevaeh's chracter is strong, unfaltering in what she feels is her mission. The battles that the Angels and Demons fought were amazing, a new style that i hadn't come across before in any PNR/Fantasy book - so it was exciting to read something new.

With numerous plot twists, I never knew what would be coming along when I turned the page. This is what kept me intrigued, as I was constantly refiguring what Ms Cage was delivering. i look forward to reading the next book in this wonderful series, SEVERANCE. I cannot wait to see where she takes this story next.

Falter is an paranormal romance tale that is written in a lush, almost poetic way. You can really tell that the author read her book out loud as she edited, so it translated very well to audio. The narration by Lucy Zukaitis is an excellent match to the character. Her voice lent itself to scenes of high emotion very well. The book builds tension slowly, and deftly insinuates in the otherworldly elements of the story in ways that kept me guessing. When the angel is finally revealed, I was completely surprised. The story twists our expectations of angels and demons in some unique ways, which made it interesting. There are a lot of switches of tension and emotional tone that made the book really compelling, and most characters are a little mysterious so you don't know for sure if they are good or evil right off. There are some pretty steamy scenes in there along with the fantastical story. The shocking ending made me want to dive right into the next book for the rest of the story!

I got a free copy from the author in exchange for my honest review but it's definitely worth a read.

The ending to book one of Faltering Souls series totally blind sided me, I did not see that coming. I should have expected the ending to be different but I didn't. Falter is like no other book I have read and I have read other fantasy books in my time.
As soon as you think you have the plot figured out Haven Cage will swipe the rug from underneath you and change things up with another twist. It did take me a minute (or few) to really get into the book, it just seemed like some information was too drawn out or something important that needed to be shared would take forever. Now that I am finished reading the book I understand why Haven wrote it like she did and I wouldn't change a thing.
On to book two to see what happens with Navaeh, Georges soul, Gavyn, and do Archer and Nevaeh finally let the cat out the bag when it comes to there feelings for each other? So many questions, I hope I get my answers in Severence to at least some of my questions. 💗💗 (JT)

I'll be honest, I'm not a huge paranormal or fantasy fan but do read them occasionally for something different then my usual read. I loved how this one started and it kept me extremely glued to the pages as I had to know what was going to happen next with Nevaeh, George, Gavyn and Archard. Haven creates an amazing realm and extremely awesome characters, they are so well developed I feel like I actually know them! I can't believe how quickly I got sucked in and felt invested in this story. By the end I knew it was going to be a cliff hanger because there was so much still unresolved and not much left until I would be at the end. If you're not into cliff hangers, make sure you pick up the next book as well because you'll want to dive right into it to find out what happens. I do believe what this whole series will ultimately come down to is good vs. evil but I have to know who wins and what Nevaeh ultimately decides.

I really enjoyed this story. I was co fused about the schooling she had beings she’s been homeless her whole life but other than that....wait there is also that pesky ending...or not ending :( Now other than those two items the actual story is wonderful. There is action, suspense, drama and some hotter than heck guys.

Each of the characters were put together nicely. They each have secrets That slowly come out helping to build the suspense. Archers friend adds some fun to the story as does Malachi. They do not at all like you think they should knowing what they are.

This is a new to me author. I like her ability to weave a story (But not the cliffhanger).

I did listen to this on audio. Lucy Zakiutis did a good job..even with the accents.

Falter (Faltering Souls #1) was a good read by Haven Cage. Navaeh and George are homeless and have been living on the streets. George is not her biological father but has been an acting father figure. They both get hired at a local cafe but George quickly becomes ill. A demon takes his soul hostage since the Devil wants Nev as ransom. Gavyn, the cafe-owner convinces Nev not to give herself over to the Devil. I really enjoyed reading this book and can't wait to read more in this series.

Haven Cage just took me on the ultimate roller coaster right. There were so many twists Falter that it takes you by surprise. I had a range of emotions and that to me screams a good read. Uncaged Book Reviews:

I won’t give any spoilers, this is a highly charged, emotional roller coaster for both the reader and Neveah. I wasn’t sure where this was going in the first few pages, but it really out performed any expectations I had. It does leave on a cliffhanger setting up for book two.

Well this is different than the usual paranormal book. It's told
about the Angel and Demons by a totally different route.
There's actually a race of humans with special powers that
are meant to help with a fight. They call them the Celata.
Each with Free Will they have to pick a side. In this book
Nevaeh’s special, she is the Clavis. A special being born to
help bring an end to the war. Along the way she meets Gavin
a Celata that has chosen the light and she seems to have
feelings for him. If he helps her to figure out what she is and
her Angel she has feelings for too Archard. Torn between
her feelings for the two in the loss of the one man she
considered her father she has a lot to consider. As they have
taken his soul to hell. If she chooses the light side she loses
George forever. If she chooses the dark she may lose
herself. Given the gift of a premonition she knows how the
end is going to go but still it is not clear what she needs to do
till it's too late. This book does not have a happily-ever-after
ending. I can't wait for the next book to be out so that I can
find out what happens next.

Now before I ruin this for you I will leave off here. I hope you
enjoy this book as much as I did. If you do like this book,
please consider leaving a review. The Authors really like it
when you do; they value your opinions too.

This book was awesome! Well written, the story came alive and felt like I was right there with Nevaeh, George, Gavyn, and Archard. The descriptions were great and made it very easy to picture everything that was happening. I couldn't put it down!

Nevaeh is an amazing character. She is strong despite what life has thrown at her and continues to throw at her. She tries to stay optimistic in almost everything situation. I love how snarky she is at times, she is also honest, caring and humble. You can't help but root for her.

Gavyn and Archard are perfect book boyfriend material. Archard is my favorite ;)

The story caused so many emotions. I was confused, frustrated, sad, excited and then...I wanted to scream. An absolutely amazing story! I can't wait for Severance!

Falter begins literally where so many other novels begin metaphorically, at rock bottom. Nevaeh is homeless, hungry and can’t seem to get particular tastes out of her mouth. The story is a bit of a slow burn, giving Nevaeh security and warmth in her life if only to begin her torment in a new fashion. With her story best described as an urban paranormal dark fantasy, Miss Cage has given us a story with no lack of originality, and while we may not all be able to identify with Nevaeh’s struggles, we would have a difficult time not having some appreciation for all that she has been through. While we don’t want to give anything away, those seeking a firm ending may be disappointed, but we were left eagerly waiting for the next installment in the series.
Miss Cage’s writing is gritty, she is not afraid to call things as they are, and her brevity serves her well. In addition, we notice the senses play a major role in how she dictates the tone of her scenes, setting up tastes and smells as much as sights and sounds, which brings an immersive experience for those with the stomach for it. Of course, this is one of only a couple books we have read that we will say should stay out of the hands of younger readers, but that is part of the charm of Miss Cage’s style, and it lends a ‘realness’ to her story.
Undeniably, Miss Cage tackles a few issues that we find underrepresented in modern literature. The plight of homeless youth is significant in the opening of the story, and one cannot forget while Nevaeh is bound to the pages of this book, there are young people out there every day who wish their stories too were more fiction than fact. The dichotomy of good and evil is looked at in relative depth thanks to the Christian influences in the novel, that being said, we would not call this a Christian novel by any means, and certainly would not recommend it as such. Miss Cage uses these real world influences to give more depth to her work, which sets her story apart from others like it.
We liked reading this book, and we love the story that Miss Cage has begun here. While Nevaeh’s motivations are easily identified, we love the direction in which the character is developing. We recommend this book to anyone who enjoys gritty urban fantasies and a bit of self-discovery. We cannot recommend this book for the faint of heart or those who may be offended by depictions of religion.
