Anh Do

Anh Do is a comedian, artist and also one of the highest selling Australian authors of all time, with total book sales approaching 3 million.

Anh’s first book, The Happiest Refugee, is his enormously popular memoir recounting his perilous childhood journey in a tiny boat from war-torn Vietnam to Australia. The book became an instant hit and has won numerous awards including Australian Book of the Year.

Anh has since turned his attention to children’s book writing.

Weird Do is an illustrated series starring Weir (1st name), Do (2nd name), a kid with a very unfortunate name. Aimed at the 8+ market, these books have gone off the charts as national best-sellers, resulting in 14 books total and more on the way. The first Weir Do won the Australian Book Industry Award for Older Children (2014).

Other children's book series include Hotdog, the adventures of a sausage dog and also Ninja Kid, the escapades of a 10 year old Nerd who discovers he’s the world’s last ninja.

In 2019, Anh released Wolf Girl, a series about a little girl who gets lost in forest and befriends a group of dogs and an enormous Wolf who become her family. Then came Rise of the Mythix, which marks the first of a number of sagas described by Anh as ‘A superhero movie in a book’.

All of Anh Do’s books are mega bestsellers and all rate between 4-5 star averages on websites such as Goodreads and Amazon.

It’s clear that Anh is an exciting voice in literature, able to delight across age ranges and different genres with great success, and he isn’t planning to slow down any time soon.

Once upon a time, many moons ago, I balanced precariously upon the cliffhanger of book one. Now I’ve devoured book two and am perched above another cliff.
‘But that’s a story for another day.’

Nooooo!

I hate the waiting game!
Me too, Ninja Kid! It feels like I’ve been waiting forever to read this book (March was forever ago, right?) and it didn’t disappoint. I think we’ve already established that I’m obsessed with all of Anh Do’s kid’s books and after only two books I think the Ninja Kid series is going to be my favourite.

They’re such feel-good books; they always make me smile and I come away from the experience feeling better about the world. In this instalment, Ninja Kid (Nelson) is up against all of the machines in Duck Creek, which are mysteriously coming to life each time it rains. There’s also a class excursion to the zoo that includes a stampede of zoo animals.

Once again Ninja Kid is teamed up with H-Dude (his best friend and cousin, Kenny) and awesome inventor Grandma Pat, who will always be my favourite character in the series. His mother is also there, but not in a starring role. In this book we find out just who that evil guy in the helicopter from the first book is and a little of his dastardly plan but the scene is set for Ninja Kid and helicopter guy to do battle another day.

Because Ninja Kid is sort of a superhero in the making his disguise of a sock fashioned into a mask is more than enough to deem him unrecognisable to everyone who knows him, even when he’s wearing the exact same clothes in Ninja mode and Nelson mode. However unbelievable this may seem, the precedence has already been established by many superheroes before him.

Both Nelson and Kenny face their fears in this book and the writing is often so corny it’s funny.
‘I hate vacuum cleaners!’ said Kenny. ‘They suck!’

It was hard to argue with him!
Jeremy Ley’s illustrations are magic! Some pages had two illustrations and there was only one page in the entire book that only had text. While Anh is one of my favourite kid’s authors, Jeremy has easily become one of my favourite illustrators. There’s humour in the pictures that matches that of the text, the expressions on the peoples’ faces are easy to ‘read’ and what’s happening in the book matches what’s happening in the pictures. I can’t believe how many kid’s books I’ve read where the illustrations have huge details that don’t line up with the description in the text, so finding illustrators that get it all right is a huge plus for me. Jeremy ticks every box and makes me wish he’d teach me how to draw.

I need the third book now please! ‘Coming soon’ is way too long to wait!

My review of the first book in the series can be found here if you’re interested.

OK, these books are starting to grow on me.

I love that Goodreads lists Anh Do as the 'brand' for this text, rather than as the 'author'. I have always suspected that all of 'Anh Do's' books are, in fact, book packaging deals - corporate constructions with a name licensed to be put on the cover as the author - so the listing of Do as the 'brand' kinda feeds into that. I might need to investigate further.

The text follows on from the first book really well; it gives enough of a summary to catch you up easily, and is probably enough even for people who haven't read NK #1. There are some plot issues - for example, how on Earth can Dr Kane not have made the connection that Ninja Kid is his nephew? It should be exceptionally clear by now. Like other Do books, it also seems to alternate a bit between Australian and American expectations, which is also a bit iffy. Nonetheless, it was fairly entertaining. Starting to see why my students enjoy them so much.

4.5 stars

Fun and entertaining like a Saturday morning cartoon, kids will love it.

Tight storytelling. I applaud how the author makes no waste. Everything served a purpose, from setting up humour to being an integral part to the plot, making for a very satisfying read (i.e. teacher coming out when trouble’s over, clogging the vacuum, dodge training, reused net, etc.)

I like how the always hungry Kenny was made all the more likeable when he gave up his banana and apple for Nelson whom he thought might need it more when facing the villain.

I also love the ongoing mystery on top of the main story- the missing dad, the villain and what he wants with the purple rocks- it keeps the reader invested.

Getting a 4.5 only because I feel that having electronics going haywire and running wild whenever it rains had a lot more potential than how it was used for the main event- electronic gates opening up at the zoo didn’t quite live up to it

This story is about Nelson who is a ‘Ninja Kid’. His grandmother gives him lots of gadgets to use to help fight against the evil Dr Kane, who looked a lot like his dad. Grandma told him that Dr Kane was his dads twin brother.

Nelson is scared when the rain comes and all the machines go ballistic around him and Kenny, his sidekick. He has to overcome his fears to save the day.

This is a great early reader. My friend has a five-year-old grandson who loves these books read to him. She showed me Ninja Kid 4, so clearly its part of a series.

Ninja kid is a fun book series that is easy to read and full of adventure. The fun illustrations appeal to the imagination. A sometimes insecure nerd receives special ninja powers on his tenth birthday and embarks on various adventures to save humanity. In addition to the exciting adventures, the ninja kid also learns to believe in himself and to try something even if he is sometimes afraid. For children from about 7/8 years old.

Mildly amusing, good for kids, lacked real "punch" and not as creative as the first one and for a kids book relying on action, I thought it took a while to get into the action.

The cliffhanger from the last book is not that well-explored or utilised.

Lots of craziness, ninja stuff and a food-loving friend will probably get kids engaged though.

Book two in the series picks up a week after the first book ends. Reader see Nelson and Kenny continue to work together in their secret identities. This time the evil Dr. Kane has taken control of all electronics and creates chaos in Duck Creek. Grandma creates a powder to reverse the problems and they save the day again. Plenty of humor for middle grade readers.

Really positive messages in this book, about not giving up, keep practising and don’t give up. Like that the characters are continuing to develop, with strong females leading the family. This time Ninja kid at the zoo.

I can see why so many children and adults have fallen in love with Nelson and his family. My young nephews would talk non-stop about this series, so I had to find out what all the fuss was about. I am really glad that I did. Brilliant childrens book that can be loved by people of all ages.
