People Make Glasgow works its way through the year with the first few stories set around Christmas time making now an ideal time to give the book a try. It contains twelve very different stories about different Glasgow women, although one story was from a man's point of view. Some, including the first two, were rather on the steamy side. I did wonder at first if this was a collection of erotic short stories. Not that I'm averse to a bit of erotic fiction but I wouldn't tend to review it. However, the stories covered a wide range of subjects including an unexpected pregnancy, suicide, grief, a family escaping domestic violence, transgender romance and even a fairy!

Diplomacy with Fairies was a particular favourite and very cleverly done. It featured various people/countries taking part in an online game called Diplomacy Online. It was written as if each country was a person playing the game and chatting about the various moves and results. I'm not too up on the details of WW1 history but suspect it reflected what was actually going on in 1917. Perhaps surprisingly, this is the story which features a fairy.

The stories were written with insight, are often moving and sometimes funny. I felt it was a nice touch that after the stories with a more serious message, the author includes some information and statistics as well as words of encouragement and details of where people can go for help and support if they are affected by the issues.

The strength yet ordinariness of the women comes through in all the stories. There will be something in the characters that I expect many women will be able to identify with. Most of the stories were fully formed and complete, whereas some were more of a snapshot into the women's lives. It's a good sign that I would like to read more about each women, that I feel I'd like to know more about them perhaps learn their full story in a novel. Lauren Lloyd shows in this collection that she is equally at home writing in a variety of styles.

I was gifted this book by the author herself, Lauren Lloyd in return of a honest review! This book consists of 12 short stories of contemporary life in Glasgow and it covers a range of topics including; relationships, abuse, sexuality and mental health.
Even though there was hard hitting and deep messages abd stories along the way, the author managed to still make it light-hearted and demonstrated the positive of these stories. The light at the end of the tunnel.
Highly recommended!

I was asked last night by @laurenlloyd40 if i would like to review her most recent book which consists of 12 people, all with their own story to tell.
Its a short book, broken down into bite sized stories of these 12 people, but Lauren has done this in such a way, that she lets us get to know the characters so well and you walk in their shoes for that short burst of time.
After each story i was left wanting to know more, and each story is written so that we can revisit them and a full length novel.
I feel so happy to have read this and cannot wait for more from this up and coming author. She will impact book shelves in a big way!!!

Amazing

What can I say?
Each story captivated you in it's own right.
Each one had a different moral or meaning behind it.
Each one caused different emotions to build within. Happiness, humour, sadness.
I truly loved every story.
I was left wanting more with each one that passed.
Truly a remarkable piece of writing.
Well done Lauren Lloyd.

A chance to dive into reading a dozen completely different stories that give insight into Glaswegian women's lives.

Not one of the women's lives are the same, but all are utterly addictive.

If Lauren Lloyd were to write a complete novel about any of the women in the book, I for one would be the first to buy it!

Great read!

A surprising gem

What an interesting collection of short studies in human lives. Delving into the hopes, excitement, heartaches and tragedy that makes up all our lives, I smiled at times and was moved at others. Definitely recommended, as for me, it revealed the possibilities of much larger tales of which each short story is but a snapshot. Loved it.

An easy read from start to finish, since each chapter is short and flowing. Containing a variety of stories, featuring relationships and dating, gaming, love, indentity and loss, and some tough circumstances that life throws at people. Most of all, routed in believable characters, with some elements based on true events.

A great collection of short stories. Some hard hitting messages and themes but delivered in a delicate way. Mixing light and dark for a good, quick read.
