As a result, her novels are filled with flawed characters who deal with challenging situations in ways that offer resolutions that aren’t always neatly cut and dried. Like real life.

The third book in the Kaylen Roberts/Brian Swift series, this one starts—and ends—with high drama. All Miami Detective Swift wants to do is get his morning coffee and head over to his office, but an assumed robbery gone wrong at Brian’s favorite coffee shop derails his plans. Meanwhile, his girlfriend Kaylen Roberts is trying to cope with her own issues, including a raging fear that Brian may someday not come back to her . . . alive. Ames ramps up the tension between these two, along with other enticing plot twists and turns, and if the ending is unexpected, it is nonetheless suspenseful and engaging. As more and more of the main characters’ backstories comes to light, the reader can’t help but become more invested in these flawed but courageous and resourceful people. A definite page-turner!
