Foes become allies as Hope reels from the shocking discoveries of its citizens in book 2 of The Last City.
From the #1 best-selling post-apocalyptic author of Final Dawn, Surviving the Fall and MELT comes a new series that is both frightening and captivating.
When explosions ring out across the country, the town of Hope is mysteriously spared from the apocalyptic disaster. Waking up the morning after, the residents of the town quickly come to realize that they are an oasis in a vast hellscape, with threats looming on all sides. While some in the town fight for the survival of all, a few have more sinister plans, seeking to exploit Hope's status for their own benefit. Allies become enemies and the old adage of "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" rings true as Hope fights to survive the firestorm.
The Last City is a 6-part thrilling post-apocalyptic series that will take you a character-driven journey like you've never experienced before. Written by Kevin Partner and Mike Kraus, The Last City will take you across post-apocalyptic America as individuals struggle against the elements, other people and their own nature as they struggle to find a way to survive in the end of days.
I write post apocalyptic science fiction both on my own account and with Mike Kraus, as well as space opera and fantasy. And one or two other bits and bobs.
Based in the south of England, I've been writing since my teens, alternating between funny and serious. In the mid 1990s, I became a regular columnist for PC Pro magazine and have written a number of business and craft books over the years.
Fiction is my first love, however - I hope you enjoy my voyages into an uncertain future.
Last Dawn: (The Last City - Book 2) - a review by Rosemary Kenny
*slight spoilers* As we learned in Book 1 in The Last City series, the US has suffered Armageddon-like results from multiple explosions and the following deadly viral strain that is decimating the comparatively few survivors. These are located in two rural cities, Ezra and the eponymous 'Last City', Hope. Both have been devastated and both are trying to come to terms with how their world has been destroyed and what they should do next. Hope has become a beacon of supposed safety, as an evil cult has begun to overwhelm much of the surrounding area. A group of Hope's original residents make a stand to oppose the Sons of Solomon's cruel regime. Success is far from guaranteed, but Mayor Hawkins and her feisty daughter Libby, refuse to let anarchy reign and strike back to protect those within its walls. A wonderful, moving, uplifting, terrifying, different post-apocalyptic novel from gifted due Mike Kraus and Kevin Partner, Last Dawn will bring light in its path - but can it escape the gathering darkness? America has been devastated by terrorist attacks and the aftermath while the survivors in Hope try to survive.
This is book two in the series. It stands pretty well on its own, although you will be missing some of the background on the disaster and the events leading up to the current situation.
This is a post-apocalyptic story set in the US. To a certain extent, if you have read one such story, you have read them all. You get the same challenges to survival, the characters that are out to take advantage of the situation and those good guys that are trying to help people. All of that is here, pretty much as you would expect. And if you are a fan of this genre, then that is all to the good.
I am a borderline fan. I found the story to be well written and easy to read and I really liked the characters (the good ones, anyway). I felt they were well developed and had a sense of depth to them. That made for an enjoyable read that I can recommend to others looking for a rather intense distraction from the mundane world.
I received an ARC from the author for review purposes.
Entertaining. Devon and Jessie have a few adventures across the country trying to find Sam, sheriff Hickman’s daughter. And the Sheriff has some adventures of his own, not all is what it seems in the town of Hope, or Ezra for that matter. In the broader community armed guards are securing the gas stations, among other well sort after locations. What’s with that, how have they come all together like this? Seems very organised for this early on in the catastrophic world of the USA. Enjoyable reading.
After a flash firestorm that has changed everything, people are learning how to live in this new world. Although I can’t warm to Paul Hickman I am increasingly sensing a thawing of his heart. As the story unfolds Paul Hickmans makes choices for the future of himself but what lies beneath the surface of his new found leadership and “friends”. Devon and Jessie continue in their search for Sam, learning more about this new world than either of them could have imagined.
This was a good second book to this series and the Sons are looming large now. I was initially put off by the character of Hickman who is a self-serving, nefarious sort (I didn't like him in volume 1 either). I have become more intrigued by him, though, as he is often doing the right thing even for the wrong reason. It will be interesting to see how he changes when reunited with his daughter.
The survivors are capable of doing things that are going to help them survive. There next challenge will be to keep the bad people out. Glad to see that Devon and crew made it home.
Characters are well developed now and it makes the series more interesting and enjoyable. Looking forward to the next book and highly recommend this series!
