The Coven: Fae Magic #1

The Cursed Witch

Rate this book
What is magic?

My name is Saraphina Proctor...and that’s the only thing I can remember.

I woke up alone, surrounded by darkness with no memory. No one here knows who I am, I don’t fit any of the missing persons reports, and the doctors can’t find a single thing wrong with me…my memory…my life…they’re just…gone.

But something lurks in the shadows in Salem, watching me…waiting. I feel its eyes on my back and my name whispered in the wind. Even in the light of day the friendly smiles around town put me on edge.

Someone isn’t telling me the truth but I will find out what happened to me…and I think Riah knows more than his pretty mouth is telling me. There's a story in those golden eyes of his, now I just need to get close enough to him to find out…

*Disclaimer: Fae Magic is Season Three in The Coven Series. It can be read as a standalone but is best to be read after Season One - Elemental Magic and Season Two - Academy Magic.

I have so many things to say about this book, and no idea where to begin. I've been a fan of this author from the beginning. Each book, each character, each storyline is so beautifully composed with so many emotions (both good and bad), twists, intricate plot lines, love, and, of course, nasty cliffhangers that keep you on the edge of your seat craving more of the delicious pain the end always brings. This, however, is different than her previous series. In the past, we've seen both the stories of the Coven members as well as the main characters as we get to know and love everyone, regardless of their status (main or side) in the books. Saffie, however, gets her own story, and what we get is so beautifully heart breaking that it's unreal. Yes, there are small mentions or cameos of other characters, but right now, we get to experience the world through Saffie's eyes, all the terror, the unknowns, the smallest new thrills, all of it, we feel it with her from beginning to end, and we get to know her in a way that's so intimate that it pulls at your heart strings all the more for it. I absolutely, completely adored reading her story. That being said, I would warn you not to read it before bed, especially if it's close to the end, because you will be left unable to sleep with your heart pounding and mind reeling for so many different reasons. Get ready to know a member of the Coven in a way you never have before as she gets to know herself.

I love LaVaugn, but...

Saffie is going to be a challenging heroine to write about. She's over 300 years old, but almost all of that time, she was trapped and cursed in such a way that she was isolated. She has spent some time with modern kids and technology, but her experience is very limited. LaVaugn did a good job of showing that.

Saffie has appeared in previous books as a support character. She mostly lines up with our previous experience of her. Telling you what didn't line up for me would be a spoiler. So even though she has amnesia, she's still Saffie.

I think putting Riah's POV in was a mistake. He comes off as a creepy stalker. Also, we know he has a plan, but not what it is or why. That's super frustrating when you're in the person's head. He must have good reasons for everything he does, but only hearing half the story just made me not like him. He is supposed to be pretty old and, well, responsible. He didn't come off that way to me. For a Seelie Knight, he does a lot of panicking.

So, I enjoyed the story. Saffie got to be a kid for a while. She gets to discover her inner badass. I just didn't like Riah. If I met a guy like that, I'd be trying to talk myself out of liking him, not throwing myself at him.

Dragged, 2-1/2 stars

Had this been well written, it wold have been good. Saffie appears in Salem, no memory, in winter with nothing on but basically a shift dress. She looks to be a teenager, is place with the woman her found her, just like that. She’s paired with a couple girls at the high school she is sent to attend just a couple days after she was found, WITH AMNESIA WHERE SHE KNOWS NEXT TO NOTHING! Hugely unrealistic. Would never be done. Big mistake having this in a high school setting. Kind of went downhill from there. Things happen, with no follow through. One of the girls is a ridiculous penguin shifter. It wasn’t cute, it was ridiculous. A coven member shows up and seems to be a teenager, which makes zero sense for who The Coven members are supposed to be. Memory doesn’t return despite two supposedly powerful spells, because oh, these things sometimes take some time? Really? Doesn’t ever happen. Everyone is supposed to keep it secret who she really is, not allowed to tell her, why? Then they give her a tid bit of information. Second book is set up from the at the very end cliffhanger of memory returns. By this time I’ve lost interest in continuing. Hope the next installment is better and more adult. Saffie is over 300 years old for goodness sake!

This was extremely slow to start with. When it did pick up in the second half I enjoyed it but unfortunately it was hard to keep my interest at the start.

I loved Savanah. I was kinda hoping Saffie was Coopers soul mate. The ending is a big cliff hanger, thank goodness I can go straight to the next book. I

DNF 6% This is not a review as much as a reminder to myself why I didn’t finish it. When I pick it up again in a year and wonder why I never finished, I will be reminded.

This is just annoying. Girl with amnesia. Guy who has all the answers. An audience who only knows bits and pieces of the larger story. Meh.

I do not know why but the description of the heroine put me off. She’s young and beautiful and fiery and has LAVENDER eyes. What? (The hero us GOLD eyes.) The heroine is like a panicked animal. The scene is bizarrely empty. The hero knows what’s up but just wanders around instead of saying “Hey Saffie, let me tell you what’s happening.” Nope. Just going to wander around freaking her out while she freezes to death. He says that he was supposed to be hidden and that her seeing him was a mistake but come on, dude. She’s freezing and terrified. Come up with a plan B.

No one notices the gold glitter she leaves everywhere.

I don’t know. It was like the author was thrilled to have a story to hide from the audience, purposefully keeping us in the dark, and it just didn’t work to make me interested.

The Cursed Witch starts the third season in the Coven World and it truly is a world within a world. It's not Coven heavy, yet it brings it's own sense of self to the table. We met and have loved Saffie since the beginning but now we get to see her like never before. Saffie's character has grown so much and really become this amazing person. We were introduced to new and awesome characters that fit in so well. One of them in particular is very hot and cold but I know it's for a reason and we will figure it out in time.

I love how the Coven world is set up to be expanded in all kinds of ways, including bringing in new types of shifters. I have to say that this shifter is my favorite because it was so unexpected!

I enjoyed how the The Cursed Witch allowed us to see a different side to this magical world. This book sets the stage for what I know will be another action packed adventure and I can't wait!!

Almost dnf'd it, after about 38% I started skim reading. I persisted because I wanted to know what happened, since I've read all of Chandelle's other books.
I wish Saffie wasn't kept in the dark for so long. The pace of this book was super slow.
Lots of things annoyed me: Insta BBF's, Saffie's lack of basic skills like getting lost at school and always needing Riah to rescue her, lots of cringe teenage dialogue.
I struggled to like Riah, I hope I warm up to him later on. But in this one he's just introduced as the creepy stalker guy, he's been following Saffie for 300+ years, observing her and falling in love with her from afar. The way he talks about what he loves about her is really icky. Also Saffie's response to him took a 180 turn from running away and being scared of him to struggling for control around him.
I'm finding it really hard getting into this series even though I really want to. Hoping next book is better.

I'm swooning. I'm having so many conflicting emotions. This book is so freaking amazing. I honestly have no idea how Chandelle comes up with this stuff. I say this time and time again she blows my expectations out the water. This book has so much drama, will leave you with so many questions and have you cheering. I didn't know how bad I needed Saffie's story until I read this. I wish I could say more but I don't want to spoil it. Betrayal, love drama, confusion and lots of mystery and fighting. Everything you want is in this book.

This book started out a little slow and took a couple of chapters to pick up speed. When we first meet Saraphina, she has no memory of her previous life or her magical powers. She is taken in by a kind woman and enrolled in high school, of all places, where she starts to find friends that seem to understand her strange backstory. As the story unfolds, it becomes clear that Saraphina has magical abilities, but we really don’t know the extent of it until the end of the book.

This is the third season in this the coven series and if it’s anything like the rest of them it will a series to greatly look forward to! I love that we are now getting round to Saffie’s story and characters from past book either appear or are mentioned! I am loving the storyline, the pacing and the intrigue and I cannot wait to read more!

A new season is opened for the members of the Coven and what an opening!!! The fast paced beginning leaves the reader breathless and it turns out to be a great start for a great serie. Chandelle always surprises us positively. This time the serie is about Saffie, a character loved by everyone, and her journey to discover her identity. A story beautifully painted by this awesome author.

Here we are again with a new FMC narrator, who has been in the previous series, in the beloved Coven World on a new adventure. Saffie doesn’t know a thing about herself aside from her name and we get to experience her struggle with her amnesia as she tries to piece together the world around her as well was who she is. There are so many Easter eggs for Coven fans as well as the unmatchable humor found in each series. I love how more or less each series can be read as an intro to the Coven World and previous series without being overwhelmingly confusing for the reader. The ending, oh man the ending.. it was equally awesome and frustrating because it ENDED.

I received a free copy of this book via the author’s ARC team and am voluntarily leaving a review.

OMG this story has heart-pounding action from start to finish. What an amazing book – a little scary, a little romance, an ongoing mystery, new friends and lots of incredible magic. Great start to Chandelle’s new series with Saffie at the core. The next book in the series has gone to the top of my must read list!

What a fantastic start to the third season in what is the best series I've ever read. Chandelle has given us a story with angst, mystery and lots of laughable moments. We follow saffie in this series and I loved the cross overs we get from the other books. Saffies story gives us an insight into the fae and also new characters to add to the coven universe. We get to see behind the scenes of what the coven are up to but this book is completely focused on saffies journey from when her curse was broken. I loved every second in this book and can't wait to find out more in saffies world! Season three has started with a bang and l'm in awe at how beautifully Chandelle has written a truely magical world!

Eehhh

I thought it was interesting. I had a hard time being okay with the amnesia because I don’t have enough experience with reading about it. Most know basic things and forget about their lives, but Saffie forgot what a police officer was (yet remembered what a bimbo was). So there was that... throughout the whole book...

Riah was really cool and I liked him. He’s no Tennessee but the boy is pretty fine. I wish I’d seen him more in his element instead of being a confusion for Saffie but them’s the breaks.

The errors were a lot more noticeable because this book didn’t hold me as hard as The Coven did with their humor and amazeness so that was surprisingly rough.

Overall she got her memory back and I’m glad because this means the coven will be in the next installment.

Good

**Warning! Cliffhanger!**
This is book one of the Fae Magic season of the Coven series BUT… You need to read the elemental series and the academy series first because the heroine in this book has a detailed history you can only read about there!
It also ends on a cliffhanger, par for the course with this ongoing series.

When Saraphina Proctor awakens in Salem Massachusetts, she has no memory of her life from before, all she knows is her name.
That means there is a lot for her to learn, like how to fit in at school, what style of clothes she likes… and what magic is!

This is a fast paced story, that fans of the Coven interconnected series will enjoy, and that urban fantasy fans will love.
There is a lot going on in the book, and it’s sure to keep you guessing.

Other readers may like this, but I just couldn’t do it. I personally (read- this is my opinion) don’t care for books that start off with the main character having no memories & running in fear (like in a horror movie). It flips my attention off like a light switch. I absolutely have no idea if this is going to continue that way, but I couldn’t bring myself to continue. I HATE horror stories/movies, & couldn’t get my brain to wrap around this to want to continue. I won’t leave any stars, because it’s not fair to score this badly when it was me.

At my age (approaching 60), life is way too short & my time is too important to force myself to read a book I'm not enjoying, especially when there are so many other books out there waiting to be read.

Saraphina has been through so much waking up with amnesia. Having people/ things chase her didn’t help anything. She is learning to cope when the rug gets pulled from beneath her feet. People she thought she could trust burn her and some old faces return. If you want to know more . Get this book!!! I absolutely loved this book and can’t wait for the next one.

A bit immature, but high school readers will have fun with this.
This book works as a standalone, but the next book (The Rogue Witch) brings in a bunch of characters from the earlier Coven Saga books. I don’t recommend book 2 if this is the only book you’ve read in the saga.

I may be biased… There is no may about it, I am biased. The author of this series is on my top ten all-time favorite authors list. She is on the automatically buy don’t even read the blurb list. . That being said, going into Saffie’s book, I felt that she was going to change things up. The main character for Elemental Magic series, Tegan was a hard-core, sneaky gotta love her kinda character. The main character for Academy Magic, Bettina was a girl next door turned kick-butt, I will prove you wrong kinda gal. So what would the Cursed Witch bring? Especially since the main character was introduced in the first series, Elemental Magic. Well, when her cursed ended at the end of the Academy Magic series it brought with it anemia for Saraphina Proctor, known to those who love and care for her as Saffie.
The breaking of the curse sent Saffie back to Salem, where she woke up with anemia. Which means everything we thought we knew about her was now out the window, which was a game changer for sure. Saffie’s personality doesn’t go away, but it does evolve into a beautifully written vulnerable heroine. Her determination, grit, and positive attitude are still there. She is still learning about the world around her but without the help of the coven, which is fantastic. Please don’t get me wrong I love the coven members. I just appreciate the beautifulness of Saffie learning about herself and who she is without someone saying things like that is not how you use to do it. To circumvent this, two new characters were introduced Gigi and Savannah, who befriend Saffie and show her what she has been missing while cursed (unbeknown to them) to an amusement park for centuries.
Riah is one of my absolute favorite heroes. He is so conflicted between duty and his feelings for Saffie. As a fae knight, Riah has been tasked by the Fae Prince Thorne to watch over Saffie has done so for three hundred years. Can you imagine? Watching over someone for three hundred years, the emotions/ feelings that may develop? Not only that but knowing also that she is meant for another. There is a plan, and he has to stick to the plan. He tries to protect her throughout the book as well as push her away. The back and forth should have given me whiplash instead it was explained in such a way that I completely got why he was running hot and cold. It made sense so much so that I couldn’t image him doing anything else expect what he did. The chapters that were in Riah point of view sets the background for their relationship and how he plays into Saffie’s story.

The author has a way of making sure that the secondary characters have a voice to be heard. They bring an added dimension to this story, which allows their friendship with Saffie to grow organically. Landrea makes the perfect mentor for Saffie, having fostered other teens. The cameos from other Coven members were an added bonus. My favorite being that of Cooper whose presence in this addition shows the growth that a secondary character can undergo throughout a series if the author is just that damn good. This author really is.
When I say this book brought all the feels, I mean all the feels. The first three chapters my heart was racing, my breath was short and I was in a panic. I read this in one sitting and came to regret that decision. It was over way to soon which is saying something since the book was 454 pages long. It ends in a cliffhanger that leaves you asking where the next page is.

And absolutely action packed extraordinarily awesome urban fantasy adventure series.

Absolutely action packed and totally awesome urban fantasy adventure series. Along the lines of the epic urban fantasy such as Harry Potter. This series will not the same is exactly that. An absolutely extraordinary urban fantasy epic adventure story. This is the third set of books in the series. Your best bet is to go back to the beginning of the series and read them all. It has it all. Which is wizards other supernatural beings a magical school as well as magical towns and other realms. The coven is the governing body of witches and wizards. They have been around since the beginning of time in the beginning of humankind. They protect humanity from the evils of demons and all other evils out there. An extraordinarily awesome cast of characters that she will soon learn to love and pick your favorites. They are all uniquely different well each is equally powerful in their own right. For the most part their adventures take place in the human world including New York City Salem Massachusetts and many other cities around the world. Follow along and be amazed and ensnared as they weave in and out of our world and into other realms and hidden supernatural locations. They visit the old world where life and magic and everything began as well as the world of the FAI the summer court. They have epic battles against demons even against winter FAI soldiers and even evil spirits. A story that has been building for a very long time a Group of prophecies that have become legendary has began occurring one after the other and this epic journey begins. A most definite urban fantasy read. I cannot wait until the next book. Who knows maybe this is the next supernatural TV series that will come out.

Ok I think this book is a bit slow paced which is why I gave it 3⭐️⭐️⭐️, but still a great read, a great story, I would classify it 16+ as it’s got perhaps a more adult theme even though you are feeling with Hugh school age ppl for the most part!
I love the introduction of new characters with a character introduced in series 1, and ended with her in season 2, so you could read this by itself, but I highly recommend elemental magick series, the academy Magick series next otherwise you might be a little lost at times!

I find the story to. E great, but it take ex to cheater 46 bf I start looking forward to the next book! This makes the 15th book I have read back to back from her in less than 2 weeks, so I obviously find her stories intriguing, and the characters relatable!

Ther is still a bit much if the push the hair behind the ears. By several characters and the blushing of cheeks 🙄 that’s a little overdone for my taste! It died gel like this one is a bit more adult themed, I am enjoying it, and look forward to finding out about Saffies curse, and spending time with the fae in the next ones!

How many different witch readings and spells can you put in one book? Apparently a lot, this book had practically everything. I get that Saffie wanted answers about her past, but I would stopped after she talked to a medium. Her new friends are just as incorrigible as Bettina & Tegan. It's a good thing GiGi  can't joins The Coven. Those two together would be big trouble! This is one of the longest Chandelle's wrote. Saffie wakes up in a strange place with no memory. She doesn't know who to trust the only thing she remembers is her name. Super scary right? Thank goodness she lucks out with the sweet lady that finds her. Then at school she quickly meets 2 best friends that are heavily into witchcraft. From there she meets a boy she saw the night she woke up in town, but is he good or bad? A lot of forces are at work in Saffies life. As you can tell by the front cover one of them is Fae. That's all I'm going to say, no go get the book!

Cursed Witch Starts the Season Off with a Bang!!

Chandelle's books make me smile as I'm reading them and this book is no different. Saffie is braving a whole new world. As she's discovering things about herself, us experienced readers of Chandelle's books start to connect the dots.

It's quite exciting to name the characters Saffie will meet when we read about her tarot card and medium readings. (If this is your first time reading a Chandelle LaVaun book please go back to season one and start with The Hidden Witch. You will not be disappointed.)

Then Chandelle punches you in the heart only to make you smile and giggle in the next moment just to turn around and break your heart...

The way this season has started off has me super excited to see what's coming next!

The Cursed Witch is the first book I’ve had the pleasure to read by this author and I absolutely loved it! I loved Saffie and felt her frustration and anxiety caused by her having amnesia. I can’t imagine what it would be like to wake up and really only know your name and have to rely on kindness from strangers to help you.
The Cursed Witch is the first in The Coven: Fae Magic and although I found it easy enough to follow along as if this was a standalone, I think if I would have read some of the previous series I would have had a better understanding of some of the characters mentioned in this book.
After reading and loving this book I will definitely be checking out the previous books and I am really looking forward to reading more of Saffie’s story in the next book in this series.
