Tau, freed galley slave and former prince of Ghana, must leave the Empire of Rome to return home to his African kingdom. With his trusty friend Ulrich, they must battle pirates, cross the freezing Atlas Mountains, and brave the wasteland of the Sahara in order to face their destiny. When an unexpected war blocks their path, they must seek unlikely allies among the reclusive people of the desert in order to upset the balance of empires.
Tau is the second novel in a historical fiction series based on true events of the fourth century A.D. Beyond the reaches of Rome, great kingdoms rise and fall deep within the continent of Africa. The Berber Gaetuli and Garamantes ply the Atlas slopes and desert sands. Camel caravans thousands-strong carry the trans-Saharan trade, and the gold-rich empire of Ghana grows in power. Amidst it all, Tin Hinan, the mysterious queen of the Tuareg, unites her nomadic people to stand against the chaos and dangers of this world.
Hi! My name is James Walker and I am a Psychiatrist from Atlanta, GA. I got into writing out of a passion for telling the sort of stories that I love to read. My favorite genres are historical fiction and sci-fi. I enjoy exciting adventures with believable characters and good villains. I've made a personal goal of writing a book every year! The Barbarians of Rome series has five books planned already, I just finished a psychological adventure story and I'm halfway through writing a fun sci-fi book. When I'm not writing I enjoy traveling and riding motorcycles. Thanks for taking the time to read my stories! It means a whole heck of a lot to me. Feel free to send me your questions and I'll try and get back to you right away!
I had my doubts, Fed up with cynical morals & dystopian interpretations of human nature and history.
This set of books unexpected captivated me. As I read, i recognised the writing accurately describes the good and bad of living in “interesting times””. The story starts in Germania', beyond the Roman limes, at a time of intertribal competition for land. Former enemy tribes allied to exploit and enslave similar pastoralist peoples.
Migration intensified during this epoch, sparked by natural shifts in climate and the need for grazing.
This set of books focuses on aband of displaced, traumatised orphans, emphasising our resilence, ability to bond & cooperate and the will to survive. The dynamic changes this band goes through on their journey from Northe4 Europe, through Roman territory, the Atlas Mountains, desert to what is now Mali is what held my interest. There’s violence, but not gratuitous, and he refrains from packing in obscenities and prurient sex scenes,
Appropriate for teens and solid enough to keep adults interested, both in unusual settings, unfamiliar cultures and the growth of each vividly created character. .
Easy five stars. This book has all the ingredients of a classic historical fiction novel, just as gripping as Ulrich. Unreservedly recommended to all fans of the genre. This author is strongly recommended too.
