The night they killed her sister was the worst in Haylie’s life…until she almost met the same fate when they attacked her. Instead, a boy sacrificed himself to save her. Another murder she couldn't prevent. Another death that was her fault. More blood on her hands.
Dylan is the best Fighter in the compound. A hardened, fearless soldier, who blames Haylie for Ricky's death just as much as she blames herself…if not more. All he wants is revenge, but what the warrior didn't expect was to end up with her living under his roof.
And under his protection.
She's a Natural—a race of evolutionary perfection. So unique, even the color of her eyes had its own name—jaylior. He devoted his life to protect people like her...and has already failed twice. Two women who found a horrible fate...one that might befall her next. Because if he can't let himself love the woman he hates, more than just his salvation will be on the line.

Wow, what can I honestly say about this book! It was amazing! Full of action, drama (made me cry a bit) and full of pure action over and over again. There was never a dull moment and I was fully entertained all throughout!
This book was just an introduction of the characters, what their world was about and learning more about the main character mentally and how it came across to people. I read this in two days and I can't wait to read more 😁.
"A good fighter isn't always someone who can fight with his fists. A good fighter can also fight with his heart and for his heart." --Jimmy, compound leader
4.5 stars!
I love discovering new books from lesser-known indie authors because many times they write the coolest and most intriguing stories. I can confidently say that I have never read a paranormal/urban fantasy novel where a characters' eye color determined if they were "mutants" or not (I loved the X-Men reference!), and so this novel was a really unique and heart-wrenching read for me.
Haylie witnessed the brutal murder of her sister and has been trying to live without her--her last living family member--ever since. She tries to blend in as much as possible and simply forget about what happened that night, including her impossibly jumping over a barbed wire fence. Little does she know that she is a Natural, an evolutionary perfection that is feared and hunted by some and revered and protected by others. One night she is attacked by Hunters who display extraordinary powers and strength. However, her certain demise is thwarted by a group of uniformed guards--led by Jimmy and Dylan--who seem to be protecting her. They tell her that she is one of them and invite her back to their compound (even after the loss of one of their own), where she attempts to understand her new life while learning heartbreaking truths about her past.
There was so much angst and heartbreak and just crap situations in this novel. Poor Haylie (and Dylan) has had such bad luck when it comes to her life and everything that she has to deal with. Her sister's death, being nearly killed multiple times, being thrust into this new world of powers and death, and having to deal with other compounders not accepting her presence were all things being chucked at her in quick succession, while she was trying to figure out her new superpowers. She was such a strong and relatable heroine, and I can't wait for more snarky flirtation between her and Dylan!
My Dylan, a truly tortured [and drool-worthy] hero..

Blurb: Four years had gone by, and the pain was still as raw as the night they'd taken away her sister. Four years, and Haylie Bryceland was still searching for answers to the one question it all came down to—why? Then they attacked her. She didn't know who they were, nor did she know the young man who saved her from death only to give his own life in return. That’s when Haylie knew she was doomed, and it wouldn't take long for her to learn that the world bore secrets she had yet to uncover.
Dylan Dwight was the best Fighter in the compound. As the leader's second-in-command, he had a decent life with friends he considered family and enough women queuing up for one taste of him. Everything changed when Ricky got himself killed because he saved a Natural—the rarest human species on earth. Dylan devoted his life to protect them and failed—twice. Two young women he could have saved but lost. And then came this Bryceland girl—incredibly, the third Natural who'd crossed his path in the matter of a couple years. He was destined to protect her, but how could he when all he craved was revenge in Ricky’s name, as she, of all people, was responsible for his death? When each time he looked into her golden eyes, a color so rare it had its own name—Jaylior—he was reminded of his failures, and the agonizing realization that if he couldn’t protect the others, how on earth was he going to protect her?
A hate-turns-to-love, slow burn romance novel Enjoy this blend of Urban Fantasy, Romantic Suspense and Steamy Romance!
*Recommended age 18+ *Written in first person, dual POV *This book is part of a series. Recommended reading order: • A Flare of Hope, Book 1 • A Flare of Power, Book 2
I was kindly given a copy of A Flare of Hope, book 1 in the Jaylior series to review in preparation for book 3 of the Jaylior series, which is coming soon. I can certainly say it was a very good read. Haylie is a Jaylior, a very rare type of Roe, which is a person who has evolved to have superior abilities of some kind. At the start of the book Haylie is unaware of her abilities as they don't awaken until the age of 25. However there is one distinctive quality that identifies Roes and that is that they have a specific eye colour. For the first few chapters the story skips back and forth from four years ago to the present where we find out about Haylie' s tragic past. I really like this about the book because it helps us to really relate to what happens and how importantly it links to the present part of the story . In so many books we only hear about a significant past event but in A Flare of Hope Elodie has emersed us into Haylie' s past where we can experience it from her point of view then skipping to the present to see the effect it has had on her. After hunters try to kill Haylie for an ability she still doesn't realise she has, she becomes part of a group of other Roes and starts to learn more about herself. Along side Haylie' s story is Dylan's and they share a very similar past. For those hoping for a little romance, as I was, I think we will have to wait for the next book as Dylan has a lot of resentment towards Haylie to come to terms with first. I hope these two find a connection with each other through their past experiences as I enjoy a good paranormal romance series. So far excellent and I will be looking out for the rest in the series.
If I could give this book a 10 star rating, I definitely would! It was that amazing! I absolutely loved the characters and the world Elodie created is fabulous and believable. I found myself really, truly crying in the first chapter. There is so many heart wrenching scenes that you can't help but being so in tune with the heroine's character.
Haylie is a great heroine in this story line. She is not only humble, but she is kind, with a bit of a wild and crazy streak that has everything to do with her personality and not her gift [which she has no knowledge of, partially]. There is a depth that is created with her that is very difficult to find in a lot of stories. I just love her.
The other characters have back stories that are touched on and it help so much to define who they are. Especially with the almost, but not yet, hero of the story, Dylan. You want to hate him for the things he has done, especially to Haylie, but you understand a lot of it, as does she. The connection with these two has barely been touched on, and I love that. It makes it so much more realistic. No instant love.
I cannot wait to read more of this series, and from Elodie Cult. She has me hooked. This is my first book of hers, and I will definitely jump at any opportunity to read more from her.
I received this book as a ARC for my honest review.
So. many. adjectives. For want of a clean sentence, I had to put this one down. Add to that info dumps in the form of flashbacks - which isn't a sin by itself, but they were awkwardly placed. Oh, and the repeating of each other's names in the course of a conversation. People don't do that unless they're being passive aggressive. It kept throwing me out of what little groove I'd gotten into.
Ultimately, my need to know what's so special about humans with hazel eyes was outweighed by these kind of annoyances and I had to punt it back unfinished.
I loved learning about the world the author created! I liked how she came up with a new eye color for her main character Haylie Bryceland and how she uses that color is pure genius. I have not seen another story like this and I have read a lot of these types of books.
There are so many unanswered questions by the end that it makes me excited to read the next book.
Being an avid fan of comic books and especially the X-MEN,this book caught my interest as the heroine came across as being some of Jean Grey type of character and so I started this series hoping for that dark type of story.
As always from this author, this was another action-packed story with a very well-done cast of characters. A balance of danger and bravery, devastation and courage, battles of will to match battles of physicality. This book introduces a very well-done series in a fantastical world of superhuman heroes and villains, and it does not disappoint.
I felt the emotions of this book strongly. It was that well written. I will be buying the rest of the books because I can't wait to see how Haylie and Dylan's story unfolds.
I found this book by chance. It popped up for me as a possible interest that is related to other similar books I read. I took a chance and am glad I did. It was a great read for me. I was immediately pulled right into the series.
The best thing that I LOVE about this series is the scientific approach on the unique characters powers. What a creative and unique idea.
Haylie and Dylan are fantastic characters. I can't wait to see where this series takes them. This story has kept me sucked in from the first page to the last. I highly recommend this book.
It was a good read. A lot of action, a lot of emotions. I liked the style of writing. First time I've read from this author, and I can't wait to read more of this series
I absolutely love this series!! Haylie and Dylan have a horrible past that connects them together yet they never met. They have to find their way through their pain and learn to let the past not interfere with the now. Dylan came off as a jerk in the beginning and I wasn't so sure I was going to enjoy this series but he learned to let go of his hate, and hurt, and blaming the wrong people, and learned to love. It was very enjoyable! Each book does end on a cliff hanger but thankfully all the books are finished and available!!
Told from Haylie and Dylan POV. The world building and storyline are solid and the characters are written well. I like Haylies character, she's one of a Kind, she's not whiney, vein or cocky. However I don't like Dylan, he's cold hearted, vicious and doesn't treat women well at all. In fact he treats them like whores and is much like one himself. He is horrid toward Haylie who has such a beautiful personality. Chris is another likeable character, where one can hope he has more of chance with a relationship with Haylie. Chris is kind, protects Haylie and is funny. They make a good couple. Where as Dylan is way better matched with Cassie. Two of the same kind. There is no romance in this book but there is sexual content referred too. The action and suspense is good and keeps you reading chapter after chapter. I just hope the next book doesn't disappoint. Highly recommended.
*********************************** Plot: Hailey Bryceland is a bartender, and just a girl trying to get by after her sister Shawna was murdered right in front of her eyes. After an attack, in which a boy called Ricky died to save her, she joins a new bunch of people, where she meets Dylan.
Dylan doesn't like her, in his eyes, she killed his brother, Ricky. However, they're drawn to each other, blah blah blah, and they learn Hailey is a Natural, a few hundred in the world with special powers.
**********************************
This is where it hit a stumbling block for me, the new supernatural world, with Regenerators, Watches, Racers, Fighters, seemed to pop up of nowhere. For those of you who have read my other reviews, the one thing that really irks me is the development and the background on the supernatural/fantasy world. I want it to feel real, full of culture and history, and this lacked that.
********************************
However, romance, really amazing. In the official description, this is rated 18+ for adult scenes, but as this is a slow-burn romance, the first one really isn't that explicit. So if you're unsure, you won't be met with any sex scenes, just a few references.
I find Dylan and Hailey's romance really hooking, it's very much an enemies-to-lovers romance, and Dylan is bit of a cold, hard, and sometimes cruel man, and he does not like Hailey at the start. I would not say this is a bully romance, though.
I loved this book!! If you are looking for something that is a little different, then this is the book for you! With well developed characters and a story line that is just a little futuristic, you cannot helped but be pulled into the world this author has created. We are given plausible 'scientific' explanations that are easily understood and answer questions for us as a reader, without bombarding us with useless, hard to decipher data. The "action" scenes are so well written that if you close your eyes you can easily visualize the scene. I cannot not for more of this series and this author!
This book was so much fun and I loved the in depth urban world building. I was given such beautiful descriptions of the world and there was never a moment where I was confused – especially in the intense action scenes! The history of the Roes was amazing, detailed, well thought out and just a little too believable if you ask me (I’ve been weirdly checking everyone’s eye colour since.) Elodie has really done her research with the biology here and made sure she created a world that is completely believable; she doesn’t rely on your suspense of belief – she proves it.
The characters are great too. The secondary characters are well developed, have their own personalities and quirks. They really brought the story to life and added so much more depth. I could see so many juicy potential side stories popping up in the next book.
Haylie is a great heroin. She’s real and honest and BELIEVABLE. She’s sarcastic, flawed, insecure and just trying to deal with the trauma of losing her sister - but Haylie’s a fighter and you’re just on her side. Dylan is full of mystery, I loved learning a bit more about him in each new chapter; there’s light and dark in him, he’s made good and bad choices and it was exciting to read his struggle with hating Haylie but also wanting to protect her. I can’t wait to see how that develops over the series!
The premise of the story is very interesting and I really like Hailey. The story angle to their powers are different from most paranormal stories and I am eating it up!
I do have a problem with the alpha douchebag a-hole Dylan that is supposed to be the love interest. I do like myself an alpha male at times bu this guy have so far not shown any redeeming qualities. He is selfish, violent (abusive towards women especially the MC) and can’t see further than his own nose. Yeah, grief can make people stupid but to strangle and choke her and bruising her and scaring her, is beyond acceptable. I only see abusive tendencies. I am not sure that anything redeeming this character does from now on will change my mind. But Chris? Man he would be an amazing love interest instead :)
Because of our kick ass MC Haylie, I will keep going because the plot and her personality is drawing me in. I do see where the writer is taking Dylan and Haylie and their similar fates and experiences but physical violence to scare a female by a male is never okay and it didn’t happen once but TWICE! Obviously you can tell that this upset me while reading this book and it left a bad aftertaste. This made me want to give this book 2 stars...but because of the plot and the MC, I gave it 3 stars.
A Flare of Hope ★★★★★ A Flare of Power ★★★★ A Flare of Sorrow ★★★★ A Flare of Love ★★★
Reading the Jaylior series felt like I was reading a fantasy edition of the X-Men in a much smaller scope. Based on the evolution of human genetics, some are born with the power to fight, be fast, shift, see or hear better. Then there are rare anomalies among them, called Naturals, who can control nature's elements.
Parents dead, sister murdered, Haylie barely manages to live day-to-day. Then out of nowhere, she finds herself in the middle of a life-and-death battle between two groups which ends with a stranger sacrificing his life for her to whom she makes a promise. As Haylie accepts being a Natural (Jaylior) she begins to live and train with others similar to her. And that was just the beginning of her days of fully awakening her powers and several more high-stakes encounters with the Hunters and their puppeteer with devastating consequences.
The series is fast-paced, action-packed, has slow-burn romance and does not pull its punches in delivering emotional blows. The characters and world-building were not so unique, but I liked how the story did not fall into the general trope of saving the world and good vs evil. While the series kept on losing brownie points as it progressed, it still is worth a read!
I so wish this book didn't turn out the way it did. I was intrigued in the beginning, annoyed in the middle, and enraged at the end. It's a slow-moving, eye-rolling, head-clutching nightmare. The two mains are not right for each other. The readers know it, the characters know it. Yet Miss Elodie Colt seems to have missed the memo. She's the only one trying to make those two work, and frankly all it's doing is working against her. Dylan never gave me a chance to like him, so therefore I do not. Haylie was a little more likeable, but only just so-so at that. But put them together and it's Bella and Edward (from the terribly cast movies) all over again.
It just didn't do it for me. The premise was good enough to get me to read it, but it just didn't hold up. Too much brooding and not enough swooning. I shall not be reading the next one, but I'd advise you to not even read this one. Unless you want to. Whatever.
>Book Review – A Flare of Hope >I am an independent reviewer. This book is the 1st in the Jaylior series and ends with a cliffhanger. Haylie is still suffering PTSD from witnessing her sister’s murder 4 years prior. When she is attacked by men with super hero powers and glowing eyes, she thinks she is going crazy. A new group takes her under their wing and teaches her how unique she is. The secondary characters are all well developed. Dylan is the man whore love interest. His ex, Cassie, is super jealous of Haylie. Dylan himself hates Haylie, blaming her for the death of his brother. >Haylie is too subservient in this story. She is all “poor me” and feels tons of empathy for everyone. The training scenes are fun. They show off the different abilities each character has. I hope Haylie gets some confidence in the next book. This story is appropriate for an adult audience. I am giving this book 4 stars.
5 stars for A Flare of Hope by Elodie Colt. This is book one in The Jaylior series. This is my first book by Elodie Colt but I am so excited to read the rest of the series. Haylie and Dylan are just yum. I don’t even know where to start. Haylie has lost everyone; she even watched her sister die. Dylan is a fighter, a perfect solider. While this is a paranormal romance it has more of a scientific approach. It deals with evolution. The whole idea of super humans is intriguing and kinda awesome. Dylan is broken and jerk in the beginning. Haylie is scared and doesn’t know what to think about everything. This book does end in a cliffhanger.
This is an interesting concept. I found it a little difficult to grasp, until the explanation that came about half way in to the story as I was looking for clues as to why there was the conflict and desire to 'exterminate' her. A few more hints earlier about who they all are and how they came about would have helped me to connect with their world quicker. I am reading the second one to see if I become more fully engaged. It appears to me, from the amount of reading I do, that an author can have such a clear vision of the world they write about that, sometimes, it is not fully communicated to the reader on the page because it is 'obvious ' to the writer.
Such an intriguing concept behind this book, one that reads almost like a PNR though it is fully a sci-fi offering... perhaps even in the X-Men guise. There is an entire race of evolved humans out there who have powers and abilities far beyond that of normal humans, yet there are some among them who are even more powerful... Naturals.
I enjoyed this book enough to grab the second, then changed my find and snagged the compiled collection of books 1-4 on Kindle Unlimited when I saw it. My full review will be on THAT collection when I am finished.
A Flare Of Hope (Book #1) in The Jaylior Series is one intense story, that had me on the edge of my seat. I won't give away any spoilers other than if you're looking for a intense but beautiful love story then look no further. One of my favorite genres hate to lovers stories always get me good, and A Flare of Hope got me good! I highly recommend you to read it and keep up with Elodie Colt other books, because she's one author you won't want to miss💋
Wow, just wow! This book was such a great read, and it has a mix of action, mystery, magic, romance & HOT guys!! Hailey & Dylan's story is going have you needing tissues. These two characters have been through hell. They both have to learn to work through all the pain & let go of the past. This book does end with a cliff hanger, but luckily all of the books in this series are available, so you don't have to wait to find out what happens next!
