Happened on this book at a used book sale. Hadn't heard of the author before. After reading the book, it is a definite keeper. Thoroughly enjoyed it.
It is a tale of adventure. The main character while a bit naive and over-confident at the beginning, demonstrates courage, initiative, responsibility, and many other positive traits. Appreciated the family working together, as well as family groups working together, to deal with adversity and cope with ill-treatment, as they journeyed north on a river boat as winter is setting in.
Would make a good family read-aloud, and a good book for older elementary and up to read on their own. (A few exclamations to the saints, etc.)
What a wonderful family friendly read! Adventure, hardship, and interesting plot; so glad I read it! Would make for a wonderful read aloud for all ages. Great values demonstrated in non-preachy ways. However, if you are looking for something that includes prayer and reliance on the Lord, this one would disappoint. Not much for CC that I can think of: minor...one/two assumed deaths, and a baby falls ill. SPOILER below!! * * * * * * * * * * * * * baby survives
