This was a really enjoyable read. A great companion book/prequel to The Book of Siavon series. I chose to read this book after reading the complete series. You could read it before and find out all the good stuff later when you read the series. I found it interesting to read about Protos after the fact however. This is a first person narrative (actually it’s a first dragon narrative), written in an autobiographical format. It is in fact, the life story of Protos (Swift), from his birth, leaving his flock, being captured by humans and becoming a circus attraction against his will, his escape from the circus with the aid of The Ruby Child, and finally his service to The Ruby Child. Jessica continues to create a fantastical world filled with equally fantastical creatures. Another great book to escape from the daily humdrum that you can easily read in one sitting. “I am Protos> It is a name that means ‘protector’, and I have chosen to live by that meaning with all my heart, as every galerush should.”

This was an entertaining read. It was great to hear a story from a dragon’s perspective and to learn about his life. I don’t want to post any spoilers, but if you like dragons, this is an enjoyable read. It is also perfect for any YA or middle grade reader you know who loves fantasy or dragon stories.
