How West Was Won

Rate this book
Theirs was a love story like no other. . .

Or at least it was in Flick O’Malley’s mind. All she’d ever wanted was a man to love her. A family to adore her. Protect her. And she’d do the same in return.
Oh, she knew West Malone wasn’t your typical Prince Charming. He was blunt. He was gruff. Sometimes, he was downright scary. But she knew he’d never let anyone mess with someone he claimed as his.
And she wanted to be his.
She also wanted his rough, wild, insane family to be hers.

West Malone’s core was dark. His world, full of gray. He existed. He didn’t live.
And that’s the way he liked it.
Until Felicity O’Malley decided to blind him with the light that was all her, with her sweetness, her innocence. But West had loved once before. And he’d failed her.
Wasn’t ever happening again.
By the time West realizes he’s not the villain in this story but the hero, will he be to late to save the girl?

This is such a good book. The Malones are my absolute favorite bunch of wild beasts.
And West is the broody, closed off one with a tragic history of lost love.
So good the second time.

I’ve already said it, but I’ll say it again. I’m a fucking genius. Rereading Laylah Roberts’ books is 100% a good idea. Every time.

So good.
I wish we got more time with them as a couple, since it took until about 70% of the way through for them to get their shit together, but the journey was still fun. Though it was also really heartbreaking and made me absolutely wreck myself.

I enjoyed this one but the I love you's came a little too fast for me. They didn't happen until late in the book but up to that point there wasn't really a change from the gruff, I-don't-like-you West to the suddenly in love protector West so the change seemed very sudden.

Finding Laylah Roberts on booksprout, and hearing i was allowed to get my copy, was such a treat!
After having the pleasure of finding her on iTunes,i knew i’d enjoy this one.....and i was right!
I need to hear more of Haven,Texas, because the men i met in this story.....YUM!
And the Malones....good thing there are so many of them,is all i’ll say.

In this story,it’s West Malone.
He’s grumpy, mean and hates sweet girls like Felicity O’Malley,Flick for short.
Because she’s sparkles and sunshine,everything he’s not.
Because she wouldn’t ever understand the darker side of life, the kind he’s lived.
If only she stayed away from his family, far away....
Instead, she becomes besties with his sister-in-law and is everywhere he turns.
Always bright, always kind and sweet.....until he finally manages to chase her off.

Flick lives in her head, because at least there she can dream of a beautiful life.
Reality is cold, harsh and painful,if only she could find a way to escape....
Knowing she needs help, knowing she needs a man that’s mean, she looks at West and wonders...
Only he starts meaning more......much more.
Could he be her one? And rescue her?

Once the need arises for him to become her guardian,he discovers a very different Flick.
One that’s tough,one that’s a survivor,and maybe would understand his darkness.
Question is,will she allow him to make up for his mistake?

More importantly, will they get the time to find out if they have a future? Together?

This was a very enjoyable read!
A budding romance, combined with a sense of danger kept me interested throughout.
And it made me want to hear more of this place.......

Written to a formula, and that's Ok but the H was ridiculous. Not grumpy, he's plain rude and needed professional help. Most of the men seem to be bordering on psychotic, and this H was terrible. The h like all the other heroines makes terrible decisions and kept waiting to be rescued by someone, anyone. If you like steamy formula with weak heroines and mean men, it's find. Just not for me.

His Sunshine

Oh my did I adore Flick. She had survived SO much and was truly a ray of sunshine through it all. She deserved every bit of her HEA.

It was so nice to see more of West and his softer side (ha! If the Malone boys have them). He too had been through so much, and really needed Flick's light in his life.

One of my favorites in the series for sure!

Decent read. Hero is a grump but not a bad guy. Heroine is a sweet girl who has secrets (brother beats her).

No sex until 80%(ish) but love yous are said prior to that.

The couple: West and Flick

Romance genre: bdsm; contemporary
Series: Haven, Texas
Length: 268 pages

Plot: Flick has a huge crush on West, and she is good friends with most of his siblings/sister-in-law. But West wants nothing to do with Flick; he's still traumatized from the way a previous relationship ended. He sends Flick away rather harshly, and his family is upset that they haven't seen her for a while. When one of his brothers goes to check on her, it turns out that they haven't seen her for three days because her brother has beaten her until she can't leave. They bring her back to their house, and finally West starts to think that maybe he should give her a chance. But of course, nothing is ever that simple - there's still her horrible brother to deal with.

Commentary: West was so annoying. He was in Alec's book as well. How can one man be so incredibly grumpy? I know he suffered a trauma (when he was a teenager...and then got his revenge...but of course, he will suffer the effects **forever**).
At a point fairly early in the story, one of West's brothers asks about his feelings for Flick:
“Thought you didn’t have feelings for Flick.” “No, not like I did for Lana. But I think . . . I think I pushed her away so hard because she reminded me of Lana.”

I find it annoying that he still wants to hold Flick in second place. What a sad life - for both of them. I would be so mad if he acted like he wanted me in his life as...something...and then only thought of me as a reminder of his past love.
But he does come to his senses and realizes that his teenage love doesn't have to dictate the rest of his life, no matter how traumatic it was losing her. He has a chance at happy ever after - if he can make things up to Flick.

Next book in the series: Cole's Mistake

Flick's Secret

I've read all of the books in this series, and I was disappointed in this book. I never got the feeling that West was fighting his attraction to Flick. He went from dislike, disinterest to she was all his in a matter of a couple of paragraphs. It was to quick. I could see guilt, maybe remorse for his words. So for me that was poor handling.

She was living with a monster, so she found a bigger monster to be her champion. Still scared from his last relationship, West does all he can to avoid Flick (Felicity) and pushes her away. After a sharp and cutting encounter, West finally succeeded in keeping her away. The problem is he learns she is in more danger than he imagined. Can West protect Flick while trying to mend the trust he broke and the hurt he caused?

“Why me? I’m no hero, so why choose me?”

Laylay Roberts’ Haven, Texas series tells the love stories of its various residents. Haven is a town where the men are devoted to their women. They do all they can to protect them, including pulling them over their knees when they put themselves in danger. It contains BDSM elements and the occasional ménage à trois. The later books focus on the Malone brothers. Eight wild, impulsive, larger-than-life, and gorgeous men. West is the second oldest and the archetypical grump and loner character. His last relationship ended in tragedy when his love was killed. So when his new next-door neighbor Flick sets her sights on him West is less than thrilled.

“Because you’re mean.”

What I liked about this series is that rather than having it where the MMC must learn to love while the FMC is a constant force always there for him, West hurts Flick's feelings to push her away and it works. Flick becomes disillusioned and believes West will never be interested. West realizes he cares for her when Flick is injured. The roles of the characters become reversed from the beginning. West is not the constant force trying to prove a relationship is possible while Flick shields her heart to protect herself from feeling hurting again. I enjoyed the role reversal with the characters and Laylay Roberts crafted it in a way that contributed to the plot and was believable to the reader. How West Was Won is the story of two hurting people learning to overcome their pain and find comfort in each other.

“That’s right, baby. I am mean. I’m mean enough to take care of you. I’m mean enough to do what needs to be done.”

Can West make up for his failings and prove to Flick he is worthy of her? Can he protect her from the monster after her? Can Flick trust West not to hurt her again? Can she believe in him? In them? What are you waiting for? Grab your copy and find out for yourself!

Flick ( Felicity )like living in Haven where the women were precious to the men and they protected their women. She wanted that fairy tale where she could have that too and her eyes were set on Wes. Wes looked at Flick like a walking calamity so he tried to avoid her but here she was a the dinner. The problem was she was his neighbor so it was almost impossible to hide from her, plus she was his sister-in-law best friend. Flick seems to be at his house more that her own it seems like God was not on his side. Flick knew she always had the hot for Wes she saw him as her fantasy come true. Wes was making her sick the way he was talking to her and he knew he would drive a large wedge between them. Flick was living at her brothers house which was not good he limited her and when she disobeyed him he beat her even though he was in a wheelchair. Mia had not heard from Flick in 3 days and she decided they would send someone over there. They found her in her bedroom beaten so they immediately taken her to their home for safety. West stepped up to the plate to take care of Flick but it almost to late. West told Flick about Lana and what happened to her. Flick finally told West and his brother what was exactly going on and they called the Sheriff. They went to get her brother but she told them he was suppose to be in Houston. She was. Afraid of any of them being involved she knew what he was capable of to hurt her and them. They finally caught up with Spencer was arrested then got bail. Flick and Beau went to visit her horse when they got in the barn someone was shooting at then and Beau got shot while trying to save Flick. West and Flick finally sleep together and he told her how he felt. Twists, turns, attempted murder and kidnapping makes this a suspenseful read.

Really good but he’s horrid to her for nearly half the book. A really rushed ending spoilt it as well.

Again it was really good in the second half of the book. The first half West is fighting his feelings for Flick, as he lost his first love. So he’s horrid to her and says nasty things to her to get rid of her. What I really didn’t like about this book is if something bad hadn’t happened to Flick, they wouldn’t ever be together. He wouldn’t ever have given her a chance and she would be stuck in a dangerous situation. I really hated that.

West (If you have read the previous books.) lost the woman he loved years before when she was murdered. So when Flick/Felicity moves to Haven and makes it clear she likes him, he won’t have anything to do with her. When she won’t take the hints that he throws her way he turns nasty on her, insulting her looks. This is becoming a trend with these books and I don’t
like it. The men don’t have to be horrible to the women. West is seriously attracted to Flick but thinks he lost his one true love. Not convinced she was his one true love as she seemed weak.

Flick comes across as a happy no care in the world woman, but she really isn’t. When something bad happens to Flick West feels guilty and vows to look after her, but he’s still fighting his feelings and it’s tedious! When something else happens to Flick (HOW MANY CHANCES DOES HE NEED?) he realises that he wants her and he loves her…… errr??????? I don’t get how he jumped from he can’t stand her to he loves her but ok. 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

As soon as they’re madly in love West has a personality transplant and is really sweet to Flick. After the way that he was with her at the beginning I found it hard to stomach. The other major complaint is the book just starts to get exciting and it’s all over! It’s too rushed.

Not my favourite. Didn’t like West.

Quick Summary:
This is different then the Sanctuary series but still has great characters, strong family ties and old fashion men who love their women :)

Flick dreams of love, family and safety far away from her painful past. West Malone is beautiful, loyal and just scary enough to help her fight her demons. She thought he was the answer to her problems until West pushes her away to protect his own bruised heart.

🖤 My Thoughts: 🖤
Flick melted my heart and I so wanted her to get her happily ever after. She was my favorite part of this story. I loved her brightness and her friendship with the rest of the Malones, even her innocent misguided assumptions, it was without malicious and a desperate need to belong. She was great and it was all adorable.

This is a second chance at love story with two MCs that both discover there is more to each other than what they present to the rest of the world.

Definitely can’t wait for Butch and Jaret’s stories! These two are my favorite type if hero!

Flick O’Malley had a one sided crush on West Malone,or so it seemed.
The Malone brothers were a hard lot and extremely protective of one
of their own.The women in Haven were loved and protected by their
men.West was riddled with darkness and had no interest in Flick or
a relationship of any kind. His coldness towards her crushed her spirit
and she finally let go of her dream of belonging to him.Flick had been
hiding a painful secret that left her battered and in danger. She was
taken under the protection of the Malone’s and West’ finally came to
his senses and took protection of Flick.

Flick found it difficult to trust and wanted to leave the security of the
Malone brothers before they found themselves in danger. It was a losing
battle as West would not let her go.He was no hero. He would kidnap
Flick and keep her safe at any cost.

“Your not above the law”, “Malone’s don’t care much about the law”. I
will keep you safe.

I loved the connection and intensity between Flick and West .He was dark,
broody, with a huge protective streak but his past hurts kept him from a
future.Flick was courageous but so fragile at times that it broke my heart.

Despite all the trauma and danger, this book by Ms Roberts was a love story.
She writes so beautifully while also addressing sensitive issues that crop up.
The love between West and Flick was not conventional but it was oh so magical.

How West was Won is the seventh book in the Haven, Texas series, and it could be read as a stand alone. Flick has her head in the clouds and her heart set on West, but when he turns her down, she needs a new plan. When her best friend realizes the danger she’s in, the Malone brothers decide she’s one of their own. Now West is faced with losing his sunshine, but can he convince her that he’s a changed man just for her?

Oh my goodness, bring tissues! This book just about ripped me apart while I was reading it, but I absolutely loved how Ms. Roberts brought Flick and West together and mended my sore heart! Flick is one of the strongest women you’ll read, full of light and spirit and she’s so sweet. She never once let the darkness that surrounds her bring her down. West loved once and lost her, so he’s pushed everyone away ever since. I loved watching him go from honestly quite mean in the beginning to completely falling for his sunshine and I loved how protective, possessive he was of Flick, and how cherished him and his brothers made her feel. This family is not for the faint of heart, but there’s so much loyalty, support, and love with these brothers that you can’t help but want a Malone brother for yourself! The danger and drama in this book suck you in, but the star of this book is the romance that blossoms between Flick and West! I have enjoyed every single book in this series and absolutely loved Flick and West!

Sweet romance with a hint of danger

Potential Plot spoilers alert
There should have been a potential trigger warning, maybe there is and I missed it. Either way, the potential trigger relates to physical and emotional abuse in the home.
The characterisation is good, especially West, although there is still something missing that would endear the characters.
The plotline is good, it keeps you turning the pages and although I felt the motivators were too simple for the depth of feeling Spencer exhibited, it was engaging.
There are some sex scenes including spanking and some swearing.
There are some errors that by now, on book 7 really should have been picked up because they are repeated in every book. Whoever is employed to proof read isn't doing a great job of it. There are missing words, words left in from editing that make no sense, incorrect words and the one that really irritates me is the mixed tense.
It's not enough to kill the book, but good God it's starting to be a serious problem for me with the author.
For the money paid I don't expect perfect grammar but I do expect a story I can read without sighing at every disappointing mistake.
There are some sex scenes, with a hint of D/s including spanking and there is some swearing.
If you are a fan of the genre I have no problem recommending the series

“How West Was Won” is book 7 in the ‘Haven, Texas’ series of interconnected stand-alone stories from Laylah Roberts. In this book, Felicity (who prefers to be known as Flick) is a 25-year-old woman living a harsh life. She likes to mentally escape into daydreams of fairytales and books featuring strong heroes. Flick is innately kind and skilled at hiding the dark side of her life. She looks like a kitten but she has the heart of a lion.

West is the man of her dreams, and the brother-in-law of her dearest friend. He repeatedly rebuffs her clear indications of interest. The dark experiences of his own past have him convinced that he doesn’t deserve to be loved by a woman, so he becomes increasingly verbally cruel to Flick in his staunch determination to push her away. When the truth about her life is revealed, West suddenly finds himself no longer able to hide from his own true feelings. His character makes me think of the old saying about how ‘still waters run deep.’

The heartache, drama and danger in this story pull you in and keep you knotted up, but the love that blooms between Flick and West is what will melt your heart. (Please note that some scenes may be difficult for victims of domestic violence, but they are not gratuitously presented.)

There are so many layers to this book and some of them just broke my heart and others had other effects on my heart and other parts of my anatomy. Flick is just the absolute sweetest woman, she is bubbly, kind and brings so much lightness to the world around her, all except for West Malone. He had lost the love of his life and none of Flick's light or innocence could reach the depths of his darkness, that is until he realises exactly what she is living with and how much stronger she is than him to still exude so much light with the darkness she contends with on a daily basis whereas he has just given in to the darkness. He also realises how much he has hurt her with his words and his actions and is determined to make up for it. The Malones adopt her as one of their own and West especially knows that he will do anything, even give in to his darkness, to keep her safe. The characters are wonderfully crafted and you will fall in love not just with Flick and West but with the rest of the crazy characters as well and the story will keep you glued to the pages way past your bedtime.

I admit I had some trepidation about reading this book but I love Laylah's books and I had a hunch I would love this one too and I was not disappointed. I really liked Mastering Malone where we first met West but I found him to be... a jerk. When I read that he was going to be the next Malone brother with his own book I wasn't excited. I was wrong.

Laylah has a way of writing about very serious topics (domestic violence and abuse) and giving them a human face. I cried reading about Flick's pain. West was the perfect match, they're perfect for each other. Flick has been through so much trauma and she's still got sass and backbone, enough to stand up to the a** that is West and she's what he needed to finally face down his demons. And even with all that angst - Laylah fits in some really hot scenes. Phew! And of course it was nice to get an update on Alec and Mia. Love Haven and this family, can't wait for the next Malone brother's book.

Not one of my favorites.

I still LOVE Montana Daddies the best- but I had a real problem with West from the beginning of this story until well into it. He was still so totally consumed wallowing in his "lost love" years later, so much so that he was thoughtless, heartless, and just cruel to Flick and her major crush on him. I honestly couldn't understand her attraction to him until I heard her backstory and it made more sense. West was so busy trying keep people away and getting mad at any changes, that he was totally unaware of what was going on in his own family. Selfish. And it took him repeating his stupidity again and again until he finally wised up and became somewhat likable. I also wished for a better ending, and a better explanation from her "woe-is-me" older brother- another selfish male. Despite all that I did like Flick but she seemed almost tween-like for a twenty five year old. [Personal note- the cover model is wrong to me. I picture an older, grumpy, and more muscled guy from his description.] But I will keep reading this series.

A real and spicy romance. 💞❤️🔥💞

Flick is a strong young woman who needs an equally strong man to help her deal with her life. When she meets West, she's pretty sure he is the one who can help her... and protect her. West missed the signals that Flick needed more from him than just being part of her family and that had almost tragic results. But he vows not to make that mistake again. 💗🥰💕

This one had me holding my breathe a couple of times from the danger Flick was in but it is finally resolved by the end. 😲❣️

This is the seventh book in the Haven, Texas series and it can be read as a standalone but it builds on the other stories, so it's definitely better when read in the order it was written. And as with the other books in this series, it does deal with the BDSM lifestyle and it's many, many variations so if that's not for you, don't read this book. 😉😍

A Good Read

This was my favourite in the series, because it focused on the relationship of West and Felicity. Others have concentrated on the mechanics of BDSM and they didn't feel as emotional. It could have been any submissive in the scenes, the outcome would have been similar.
This story runs a gamut of emotions between the couple and the communication good and bad between them is real. Not through some kind of leather or chain contraption. Plus it gives good storyline. I
Felicity has come to live in Haven with her paraplegic brother and lives on the ranch next to the Monroes. Befriended by Mia from the previous story, she is a frequent visitor and popular with all the Monroe brothers except West. Unfortunately, he is the one she is attracted to. He does everything to stay out of her way until events take a drastic turn and he has to take action to save her sanity and life.

Another great story!

Flick had been fantasizing about West, since she made friends with Mia. She loved the whole rowdy bunch, a.nd thought about how amazing it would be to be a part of their family. She knew that West would be the perfect protective mate, and his family was a bonus prize. West who still locked his heart up tight, from a past tragedy, so he used being rude, and finally acting cold, and insulting to make her go away. After 3 days of no contact from Flick, Mia yells at him to go and apologize, but her husband sends his brothers to check on her. When they come back, with, A badly beaten, and injured Flick, all the truth comes out of the horrible abuse she has endured by her own brother. The rest has a lot of painful, sad parts, and West blaming himself, and claiming guardianship over her. Well thought out story. I loved how they build up to their HEA ending. Trish. A.

Love the Malone brothers. The second oldest West is the loner and probably the hardest of them all to get to know. Flick seems to think he is the one for her but West has different ideas. He wants no one but his family and Flick is not family even if she spends a lot of time at his family’s ranch. Just as he thinks he has gotten her to back off, her life has been endangered and she is seriously hurt. Things change and from here the story heats up. This is a great story, well written and entertaining. Even though there is a lot of danger surrounding them, there is a great sense of humor contained in the story that has you laughing out loud. There is a HEA for the two of them but a lot of tense moments occur first. This is a great story and I would highly recommend it. I can’t wait to see which of the Malone’s will be the main feature in the next book.

Flick is next to Haven, but longs to be part of it, protected and loved like the other women in that family. She’s fallen in love with West, the most taciturn and unapproachable of the Malone brothers, and she seems to him to be like a bright, flitting gnat in his life. He’s determined not to get involved and unknowingly sends her straight home to danger. And that is where the effectiveness of Laylah Roberts’s writing comes in; she’s hinted at this darkness, but the sudden explosion into it is horrifying and arresting. Suddenly everything we’ve read about Flick and her determined radiance makes sense – making her easily the most appealing of the Haven characters. The end is a relief, but could have been explored further, hence the 4 stars.

This book was a great read. I can't wait to read about the rest of the Malones! West is loyal to his family, but he wants nothing to do with anyone else. Flick (Felicity) moves to Haven and falls in love with him. But, as I have said, West only wants family. He has had tragedy in his past and doesn't want to love again. Flick makes all that change. Flick has been in her own nightmare because of her brother. He beats her, but no one believes her or they are bought off. The Malones can't be bought and when Flick's life is in danger, West realizes he loves her. This was such an emotional book for me. I really enjoyed it. I only wish the ending was a little longer. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout but I loved this book so much I bought it. I highly recommend the entire series for everyone!

The Perfect Protector

West is a wonderful man and I love him and wanted him to find his happiness. He’s a lovable teddy bear. I love his bluntness and his love for his family.

I was amaze with how hard he fault his attraction to Flick. It was very entertaining to read their interesting interactions and their chemistry sizzle even when he pushed her away.

The topics in this story hit home and are very scary however Author Laylah Roberts has a beautiful way of teaching us how to face traumatic events that I love and appreciate.

Sometimes you have to get to know a person before you miss out on something special. Flick saw beyond West rudeness. She understood him and loved him exactly as he is.

Love is hard to find but when you have it hold it tight. I love this series and can’t wait for the next brother to find his happiness.

This is a sequel of sorts to Mastered by Malone; though characters from that book appear, the MC's relationship is a standalone. Here we get Flick, whose crush on a man still pining for his childhood sweetheart seems hopeless until she gets seriously hurt and his protective/possessive instincts come to the fore...

This was a decent addition to the series; I did like Flick, though much of her situation was unbelievable (and I wasn't all that wild about the deeply offensive depictions of people with disabilities or the "other"). In addition, West's running hot and cold got tiresome after a while. Not one of the author's better efforts; but not the worst, either.

3 stars. Trigger Warnings for Abuse.

West e Felicity
