The Power of Twelve #1

Apocalypse the Beginning

Rate this book
It was the end of the world as we knew it.

The Third Trumpet of the Revelation sounded and the world was ruled by the Shadow. Monsters, demons, undead and worse. Humans have retreated into underground bunkers to survive the Apocalypse.

I don’t belong anywhere. I’ve always been the odd girl out. Weird shit has happened around me all my life. You’d think with the world literally gone to hell I’d fit in better but no such luck. I’m still me, still an outcast, and still all alone.

Kicked out of the only home I've ever known, the first thing I do is run into four gorgeous men who call themselves mages. Remember the weird shit always happening? It's a fleeting encounter but I just can't stop thinking about them when I get to my new home in the bunker.

When Fate doesn’t just knock on my door but bursts it open with undead monstrosities, I’m saved by Efram, Rafe, and Nathanial. A Necroseer, a Demon, and an Angel. Yep, told you shit was weird. They help me escape the fall of the Bunker, and vow themselves as my protectors. I’ve got a destiny to fulfill. I’m special. More special than I ever thought. So they say.

It’s hard going from being solitary to having so many people in my life, people I might care about, but then I meet Tynan too.

He’s dominating. Controlling. Arrogant. Powerful.

Attractive, sexy, brooding, an alpha bad boy that makes my heart race.

And a Horseman of the Apocalypse fully under the control of the Shadow. That sucks.

They say I’m the one to save the world. That’s great, but how?

Apocalypse: The Beginning is a slow burn fantasy romance with magic, dragons, demons, angels and one headstrong heroine who has to not only save the world but navigate her way through multiple relationships.

It is Book One of The Power of Twelve, a five-book series. Previously unavailable in Kindle Unlimited and published as Divine Gift.

USA Today bestselling author Miranda Martin writes fantasy and scifi romance featuring heroes with out-of-this-world anatomy that readers call 'larger than life' and smart heroines destined to save the world. As a little girl, she would sneak off with her nose in a book, dreaming of magical realms. Today she brings those fantasies to life and adores every fan who chooses to live in them for a while.

Though born and raised in southern Virginia, Miranda Martin is a veteran who's traveled to places like Korea, Hawaii, and good 'ole Texas. She's since settled in Kansas, the heart of America, with her husband and daughters, a cat, and wishes for a pet dragon or unicorn. When she's not writing, you can still find her tucked away somewhere with a warm blanket and her nose in a book.

So disappointing

This was disappointing on several levels. The story is actually interesting and something a bit unusual. There are plenty of apocalypse books out there but this one seems to be about the biblical apocalypse. It's been a while since I went to Sunday school but I caught some of the references, like the seals breaking and the horsemen. That said, they were references with no further explanation so I was usually more confused than anything. Was this supposed to be the biblical apocalypse, or was it just used for inspiration?

No going to lie, the editing is pretty awful. And when I wasn't tripping over typos, I was cringing over really bad grammar. The plot holes are big enough to back a semi truck into. There's supposedly no electricity so they are powering the train cars by batteries that get their energy from people working the pumps. Okay, I can buy that. But then they're pulling into a new bunker and using medical lights to heal their friends. They're all living underground because of the killer locusts, but it's okay to take a train car outside to get to another bunker? And if they didn't have electricity, how did they build all these bunkers that apparently weren't there 10 years ago? The book was just riddled with these kind of inconsistencies.

I think I didn't like Aviella, but it was honestly hard to tell because there's not a lot of description or character development to be had. I don't have any idea what she looks like. She mostly came off as wishy washy with no clear defining personality traits. The guys are more of the same: 2 dimensional with no personalities.

I think this could have been really good but right now it reads like a first draft. The author needs to go back and edit this for content and grammar. I would consider rereading if she did that, but right now I probably won't continue the series and I doubt I'll read anything else by her.

It dragged... Normally i can push through slow stories, but this one was not interesting, the tears were vague at times as were the guys intentions surrounding her. I kept going the story would get better, but i finally called a quite at 76%.

Aviella’s father holds her and runs. They have to get back to their apartment. When Aviella opens her eyes, her dad is crouched beside a car and doesn’t see the crazy man sneaking up behind him. The buzzing starts in her head and the man flies back into a wall. As she apologizes, her dad says it’s okay and they continue to run after he makes her promise to run home if they get separated. Today was her 9th birthday, but the ground shook and they had to run. As something dark hides the sun, her dad told her to survive, keep hidden what she can do, and that he loves her. The buzzing comes again and she gets sick on the sidewalk.

Running again, Aviella opens her eyes and a glowing man like an angel, pure white with feathery wings holding a massive, blood-drenched sword hovers over the mob that a moment ago had been running toward them then fell to their knees. They’re begging for his mercy. Above the angel is a dragon. When the buzzing comes, her dad tells her no and turns the corner away from the sight. But then the sidewalk thrusts up and they are flying through the air. When she crashes to the sidewalk, she can’t see her dad, but he calls to her from the other side of the street. As she tries to cross, the street opens up and she can’t get across. Her dad yells to run home, heaven is watching over her, and says he will meet her there. Two blocks away now, but the buzzing gets louder and she sees an angel hovering in the street. Then a boy challenges the angel, throws a rock, and it follows him, leaving her escape path open. She makes it home and into their basement apartment. Exhausted, she climbs under the covers and falls asleep, waiting for her father to join her.

Wow, I’m wrung out reading this fast-paced post-apocalypse book that is starting a new series. The story line is actually scary! The characters are described well, yet it’s hard to know who to trust! Aviella is different and when she finds others like her, she starts to learn about her powers. This is a good thing – because it’s not over yet and something is heading their way! Saved from the monsters by her protectors, is she ready to save the world?

Interesting End Times Fiction

This is a great story! The story opens with a girl caught in the midst of something awful, and she winds up alone. Fast forward 10 years and now she is an orphaned young woman thrust into an interesting end times tale where she meets interesting men and finds herself attracted to more than a few of them. The sexual tension ramps up in this book, but nothing much happens yet. Our heroine seems to be on one fated mission and all caught up in the biblical end times, except there are plenty of paranormal characters too. This is book one, so there is much more of this story to read in the other books in this series. I for one cannot wait to get started on book two.

Really, really good...
This is the beginning of a saga so it ends after the first chapter. This well written page turner is worth the ride.
The world post apocalypse is a dangerously strange place. Aviella has always been different and had trouble fitting in at the orphanage she lived in for the last ten years. Once she’s forced out to be on her own she runs into other people like her. With the help of the others she learns to understand and control her own powers. Something is coming and they’re all going to have to prepare.

What a crazy world after the Apocalypse!! Aviella is a survivor of the Apocalypse at 9 years old and has powers she has no idea how to control. Years later she is out in the world on her own learning to exist. She begins to meet other magical beings, many magical beings - I am almost confused with so many and no explanations as to their roles. So begins the magical and dangerous journey to try and save the world!!! This is a great start for a new series, completely unique, and I hope there are MANY to this series!!!!

This is a new series by Miranda Martin. I love her dragons of Tajss so I thought I would love this as well. I hate to say, not as much. The story started with a child having some sort of power then being ripped away from her father. She grows up in an orphanage then is kicked out. Now she has to make her way in the world after the apocalypse.

This is the first book in the series and let me say the suspense and drama kept me on the edge of my seat wondering exactly what Aviella was going to do next. The action that surrounds her is just the start of what seems to be her usual life. I can not wait to read more into this series as I love this authors work.

This one was not the typical Miranda Martin story I’ve come to expect. It was dark, it was scary, it was more a coming of age and strength tale than her gladiator or dragon romance on a far-flung planet. I liked it and am looking forward to the next chapter of Aviella’s story!

Awesome story

This book just sucked me in like a vortex. I was immediately drawn into this Apocalyptic world. I could feel the fear, suspense, and the mystery of her band of "others." I can't wait to read the next installment.

The Apocalypse has come. The Seals are breaking and nine years old Aviella is caught up in it...on her birthday with her dad. Danger is all around them. Demons, angels, undead all surround them. Monsters walk the Earth and all are at war. The governments across the world loose their weapons of mass destruction in an effort to fight off the inevitable. Little Aviella is separated from her dad when she uses her special abilities. They have a plan - get back home...I'll meet you there. Aviella makes it, but her dad never shows. So she does the only thing that she can do...she makes a call that was predetermined should this happen. Now, ten years later she's being pushed out of the orphanage that she has called home. She's always been the outcast there, but now they tell her it's time to go. Not long after departing Aviella is robbed, but two young men come to her aide. But trouble seems to follow her wherever she goes. But she draws new people into her life as they sense her abilities. They are determined to help her because there is something unique and special about her. She must survive no matter what.
Divine Gift by Miranda Martin is the first book in her Fallen Revelations series. When I read the blurb for this book I knew I just HAD to read it. I have to admit, the author starts the story off with a bang. We're immediately thrown into the deep end of the story and hit the ground running. The monsters, the undead, and an angel are all thrown at us. It takes a second to catch one's bearings as you read, but once you do you're on edge for what will be coming next for these characters. Aviella is an interesting character. We get hints that her father has always known there was something unique about her, and he was always trying to protect her. The introduction of the various characters is well done. They each are unique and interesting. I love the surprises that the author writes in for each one.
Overall, there isn't much that I don't like about this book. There are some oddities for me in the story though. A couple of the characters come off mostly as stoic and reserved, so when the author suddenly shifts to them being light-hearted and joking, it throws me off. LOL! I even went back a couple of pages to check and make sure it was the same character in the scene because it didn't seem like them at all. Also, the author has Aviella indicate that ALL the men that she'd met thus far had been ridiculously gorgeous, but by that time in the story, she had met quite a few, including the admin, and had not found all to be gorgeous and hard to resist. So I felt that was a bit of a flaw in the story.
I have to say that I am more than eager for the next book in this series. I love the horror element, though I do wish that there was more. I would like to know more about the monsters, about Wormwood (is it a facility or something that fell from the sky as indicated at one point in the story?). I want to know more about the Mages and their power. This story is engaging, but it does raise quite a few questions for me. But the storyline is well done overall. I enjoyed reading it and this was one of those hard to put down books for me.
I am rating this book 5 out of 5 stars. This book gives you action, adventure, danger, some hints of romance all wrapped up in this dystopian-apocalyptic fantasy novel. I couldn't get enough and am eager for the next book in this fascinating series.

rcvd an advanced reader copy from the author for giving my two cents. we meet Aviella, a young girl running for her life with her father. she has powers she doesnt understand and "it" comes out in time of need. fast forward 10 yrs and she is kicked out of the orphanage and off to a bunker. since the war of gods and demons ppl live on rations and fear. aviella meets a group of sexy men in the platform for she shares energy baggage with that she doesnt understand. she meets Rowan, a mute girl who becomes her lifeline and bff. she meets more sexy men who are helping her. unfortunately she gets too riled up and her powers let loose. time for running. all her companions are trying to teach her to harness her powers plus keep them blind in time of need. great things are to come from her according to everyone... but aviella cant help wonder what it all means and constantly thinking about where her father is. will her companions be there to guide her to heaven or hell?

I'll admit, Aviella is not my favorite heroine-- I don't care for the impulsive girls who put others at risk when they act on their emotions before thinking things through. That said, the worldbuilding in this book is exceptional and unique. The plot and the unpredictability kept me reading, even with my bias against this type of female character (which I know others can appreciate, so I won't factor it in to my rating) Give this one a try, I think you'll find it worth the read...I've even purchased book

A riveting adventure of one young woman as she discovers herself and her destiny. Throughout the story there is a huge pull for her towards several men. The tension sometimes is extreme. I’m not sure how she doesn’t scream sometimes at them. She is an amazing character that has had so many losses. Lots of magic and paranormal in this dystopia. Can’t wait to see what and where the next book will take her.

I voluntarily read and reviewed a copy of the book.

All I can say is wow. The apocalypse has come bringing the four horse riders which is freaking dragons. Aviella is lost in a world that is breaking down. Throw in some hot guys and crazy action and she's suddenly on the run.

I'm now hurrying to get book two.
