Let me begin by saying that I have never served and am therefore not an authority on the accuracy of any of these stories. I am, however, a huge fan of OM and support them in every possible manner. I'm going to keep this open and edit each time I finish a tale.
The Night Stalker Rescue by Jason Kasper This is a great story. I am not familiar with Kasper but I certainly will be reading more. I was hooked from the very first sentence. As the title says, this is an action packed rescue. It is fast paced, infinitely descriptive and wholly addictive. This was a terrific way to begin this anthology.
Binary by G. Michael Hopf Oh, the things we do for our friends. In this short scifi story, Conrad blames himself for his sister's death and attempts to harm himself. His close friends build him a virtual world designed to help him heal. It is super twisty, and relevant. Loved it!
Edge of Survival by Kyla Stone This one is well written and well plotted. It is shorter than the others and feels like an excerpt from a larger series, but it is quick and fun.
The Conformist's Accord by Ciara Knight This is a great story. Good plot, strong characters, an obvious lead in to a solid series, but the editing is tough.
Lightfighter by Jeff Kirkham and Jason Ross This one was odd and confusing, but it ended well.
The Wild League by A.R. Shaw I'm going to skip this one for now. It is book 6 in a series that I have not read.
Extraction by Eric Gardner Although I didn't really care for this one, if it's your thing, it is going to be a good series. It is well plotted, mysterious and well written. If you like zombies, you'll like this. It could really use another editing review before becoming a final draft.
Fanfare of Man by Kwen D. Griffeth This is my favorite one so far. It is a well plotted, well written dystopian story that brings things full circle. Hopefully the music will outlive us all. I terrifically enjoyed the playlist ending.
Dark Days of the Albatross by Ryan Schow Oh, that was a good one. A really, really good one. In a scenario that I have imagined a hundred times, a wounded soldier comes home to an America that has been invaded and changed. This story is the journey home, where the real fighting will begin. Well plotted, well written with terrific characters, I loved it.
Free Fall by T. S. Paul I really liked this one too. It is a prequel, so it was a fun "jumping off" point for the series. I will definitely look into what comes next for this author.
Blackbird by W.J. Lundy is part of the Tommy Donovan Series. I have not read the first book in the series, so I am going to skip this one, for now.
Galaxy by M.L. Buchman Although this one was very well written and fun to read, it is clear that it is part of a larger series. I felt a bit left out of the background and details of the characters. I'll have to look farther into it.
Shanghaied in Paris by Lars Emmerich This one is a good story. Well written with only a couple editing errors, but I spent too much time wandering about in the dark. It is obviously part of a series so very little of it made sense to me.
True Enemy by M.L. Banner Although this one is also part of a series, it appears to be the beginning, a prequel. I really enjoyed the tale and am imagining all of the places it can go from here.
Bunker by Jay J. Falconer This one is a great story. It is also part of a series, but I was clearly warned that it is the prequel to a spinoff. I can see why. There are a lot of characters here going in a lot of different directions. I will definitely read more from this author.
Arizona author Jay J. Falconer not only writes novels, but also serves as a publisher, blogger, editor, engineer and Sci-Fi junkie! He is a retired college professor who now, in addition to writing his highly awarded NARROWS OF TIME, TIME JUMPER, FROZEN WORLD, POST-APOCALYPTIC SURVIVAL and AMERICAN PREPPER science fiction series, edits and writes for Incursion Magazine, and writes award-winning screenplays. On his website he shares some personal thoughts about his work that are helpful in reading his books: `My writing style certainly doesn't appeal to everyone, especially those who prefer cookie-cutter science fiction that's been done to death. Those types of stories bore me and the Internet is littered with them. I shoot for something unpredictable, fun, and maybe a little shocking when I begin a new project. My goal is to entertain you at every level. To surprise you. To make you gasp out loud. To leave you wanting more from the characters and from the series. If that means that good characters have to die a horrible, twisted death, then so be it. My characters are flawed -- they drink -- they curse -- they ogle members of the opposite sex -- they make mistakes, then try to cover them up -- in other words, they're real people. My target reader is someone who appreciates an author who's willing to take chances and who never takes the easy way out with a scene. If you're looking for a great big bow on top of an ending that you can see coming from ten miles away, then maybe my books aren't for you. However, if you're craving something new and different that will shock and stimulate your senses, then reward yourself and give my stories a read.'
Another of the fine contributing authors for this ORIGINS OF HONOR collection is Ryan Schow, who states ‘A writer writes not because he wants to, or because he’s trying to accomplish something; he writes because he has to, because the very act of it consumes him because he has things to say and stories to tell.’
In this impressive collection of stories, Jay and Ryan are accompanied by fine authors ML Banner, Lars Emmerich, A. R. Shaw, C. T. Knight, Eric Gardner, G. Michael Hopf, Jason Kasper, Jason Ross, Jeff Kirkham, Kyla Stone, M. L. Buchman, T S Paul and W. J. Lundy – all writing about what makes a hero, and the overall sense is one of awe. The stories are well-hewned and rich in character building and atmosphere.
Immersive, absorbing, and yes, awe-inspiring, this is a collection of excellent tales, and the proceeds go to Oscar Mike Foundation for disabled vets. Excellent!
Great collection of short stories in several genres. There's something here for almost anyone who enjoys action thrillers. Some science fiction, some right out of the Twilight Zone.
These short stories show the desire of the authors to portray the main characters as winners with integrity. And I found them all well- written and inspiring. With well developed characters and plotlines that brought you into the story you felt the same fears, angers and rages they felt. Some of these authors I've read before but most were new to me and are on my list for future boom purchases.
This book was a disappointment. The stories were too short, not enough to get into the story. Then all of a sudden the story ends and the true ending is left to your imagination. The only two I enjoyed, but they were too short, were the first one about rescuing a Night Stalker and the Miranda Chase Galaxy one.
Anthologies are good for discovering new authors, and this one has a short novel from M.L. Buchman's Miranda Chase. (I love Miranda Chase books, most definiely the best of Buchman!) So, I went for it. To say this is an uneven anthology would be a gross understatement. Except, obviously, for Galaxy, the CHase story), no story engaged my interest. At all. Sorry...
Aside from the stories by Buchman, Kasper, and Lundy, this book was not for me. I need the things I read to end on a happy note, and not get too dark or depressing along the way. I don’t think I am the target audience.
I bought Origins of Honor as the proceeds go to a worthy cause and some of my favorite authors contributed. I really enjoyed the mix of stories involved and found a few new writer's to follow. Well done to all contributors.
Most of the stories were good, what I didn't like were the way sooner if them brought you up to when something was going to really happen and then said go buy my next book. I don't mind sort stories, but I want them to conclude.
wHAT AN AMAZING collection of 15 stories,,liked them all, loved most- most are prequels or from a series, and i want to read them all!!!! This was a fund raiser for wounded vets, what a deal we got!!!
Great character building that introduces Bunker and his new way of life. This is the second book of this series that I’ve read and I just want more. I highly recommend it.
Most of the short stories in this collection are really good. A couple stories are pretty bad writing style. Good introductions to some quality authors!
A compilation of short stories, some futuristic space battles, some of a more current nature by various authors. I did enjoy the David Rivers saga the most.
I really liked this story. Lots of blood and gore so I shouldn’t like it but it is so well written that I was fascinated. Read it if you like vigilante justice.
I found the many stories captivating and left me wanting to read more. Will be looking forward to reading the follow along stories by several of the authors.
