Lawrence du Garde Peach was an English author and writer of plays for radio, stage and screen. Today he may be best remembered as the author of over 30 books for Ladybird's Adventure from History series of nonfiction children's books, published from 1957 until his death, which was the largest series Ladybird ever produced, and remained in print until 1986.
This was interesting and I definitely learn new things, but it should have just been titled Roman Britain because Julius Caesar only featured for a couple pages.
An interesting and short read (Ladybird book series) on the history of Rome in Britain—a fun one to get through before visiting places like London, St. Albans and Bath. Many roman roads and ruins are still being unearthed in central London when a new building is set down.
Misleadingly named, as Julius Caesar only features on a couple of pages, much fewer than Agricola, of whom the author is a big fan (much less so of Boadicea). Great illustrations.
I was sorting through my old boxes of books and found this, which is probably one of the first history books I ever read. I'm sure there are a number of more exciting child-friendly books about the ancient Romans, but this is nicely illustrated and written very clearly. Six months ago I completed a degree in ancient history and archaeology -- I probably owe my choice of study to books like this!
I enjoy reading these old Ladybird books for nostalgia reasons. They are somewhat out of date and very basic, but they do provide a quick potted history and the illustrations are entertaining. This one is really about Roman Britain and not a biography of Julius Caesar. He is a minor character at the very beginning. There is more about Agricola who was a soldier then governor in Britain.
