A group of adventurous vintners from around the world embarks on a wine-infused journey to revive the 6,000-year-old wine industry in Armenia after the country gains its independence from the Soviet Union.

Haig Koleyan, a veteran winemaker, arrives from Tuscany with little more than a dream to modernize a wine industry nearly moribund under 70 years of Soviet rule. Aram Almayan sells several of his casinos in Moscow and moves to Armenia to plant a vineyard and build a major winery with his charming daughter, Carla. Van Dorian, the philosopher/vintner, sells much of his Los Angeles company and moves to Armenia with the same passion. He develops an elaborate theory and practice about how wines can and should be paired with the deepest and most nuanced human emotions. Henry Cobb, a famous American winemaker from Sonoma, California soon joins the group to satisfy his constant quest for new terroir.

As they start transforming the wine industry in Armenia, a major scam is underway in Moscow where cheap blends of one of Haig’s top wines, the Korah, are being sold to unsuspecting collectors for 100 times their market value. At the same time, personal and professional peeves start clouding the atmosphere among the winemakers within Armenia. When the scam in Moscow leads to the murder of one of the employees of the largest wine merchant in Russia and endangers the life of an employee of the Almayan winery, it falls upon Aram Almayan, with his close contacts in the Moscow police department, to solve the murder and diffuse tensions in Armenia

Vahan Zanoyan is an author, traveler and global energy expert with over thirty-five years of experience serving as a consultant to numerous international and national oil companies, banks, and other public and private organizations. He has travelled extensively throughout the world in both his professional and personal life. Zanoyan has published two volumes of poetry in addition to his debut novel, A Place Far Away (2013) and its sequel, The Doves of Ohanavank (2014). His third novel, The Sacred Sands, was released in November 2016. He currently divides his time between Southern California, Armenia and the Middle East.

I enjoyed the depiction of the winegrowers in Armenia - their stories, their relationships, and especially their feelings - about life, and about their country. One of them specializes in choosing the right wine to minister to his customers' moods, including one which he observes among them: "disillusion with justice." The last chapter updates the story from the other side of the revolution: "The hitherto misdirected emotion of disillusionment with justice had finally found its proper definition in peoples' hearts, and Dorian had found a wine to pair with it."

Less successful is the subplot, about a fraud involving wine in Moscow. The book's leading character, Haig, when the mystery is discovered "did not seem to be interested in the main players" (in the scam), and neither was I. But it was the process of discovering the truth of the scam which brought the principal characters closer together, so that they could work together for the future of the Armenian wine industry.

I am not a wine expert, I enjoy a few whites, reds give me a headache, and sweet wines are totally out. The mystery was interesting. The part I enjoyed the most was one character’s belief that wine can change a person’s emotions. Wine analysis was quite interesting. I received this book as a Goodreads giveaway and appreciate the opportunity to read an review it. I learned much about the wine industry and appreciated its resurgence in Armenia.

I really loved this book! I don't usually enjoy fiction this much, but I felt like I learned so much. Especially with the added tidbits about different grapes in each chapter. I work for an Armenian winery and this book helped me with a lot of insight to the culture!
