Wow! This book completely awakened my love for short stories and the power they have to say so much in a couple of pages. My favorite has to be the last one, Laramie Time by Lydia Conklin.
Read an edition of a literary magazine (digital or physical)
Literary magazines are a completely alien concept to me. So finding one was a challenge. I didn't exactly enjoy the experience of reading this. But it did teach me a lot about what I do like to read.
If I'm going to read a collection of shorts, they need a unifying theme. They should either be by the same author, about the same subject or have some other sort of thru line. Because I've devoured collections by Neil Gaiman and of scifi shorts. But eventually I had to schedule myself to read these one at a time. The whiplash in style, tone and subject was too much for me to go from one to the next all in a row. Once I figured that out, I was able to finish, albeit slowly. And it's how I discovered I could have more than one book in progress at the same time. So my experience here was a net positive. But I won't be reading any other general literary collections any time soon.
