Mystery of Old San Francisco #3

No Quiet Among the Shadows

Rate this book
In a new Mystery of Old San Francisco, Celia and Nick must look for answers among the dead to stop a killer among the living . . .

With the city’s Fourth of July celebrations in full swing, Celia Davies has stolen a moment away from her nursing duties to take in the festive spectacle, but is stunned when she spots the one person she thought she’d never see again—her supposedly dead husband, Patrick. Moments later, the investigator who had confirmed Patrick’s death is killed when he suspiciously falls from a high window, and Celia begins to fear that the roguish man she married has returned to haunt her life once again.

Joining forces with Detective Nick Greaves to get to the bottom of the mystery, Celia is soon drawn into a murky séance group, where the voices of the dead suggest that everyone involved in the case is engaged in some sort of fraud or deception. Determined to discover which of them might be a murderer, Celia and Nick will find themselves following a trail of clues that leads them down dark alleys into a shadowy tangle of spiritualism, altered identities, traumatic pasts, and secrets worth killing for . . .

I wanted to like No Quiet Among the Shadows more than I did. For most of the story, it was too slow-moving for me, and I found it hard to connect with the characters as I did in the previous two books in this series. I am glad, however, that I did stick with reading this to the end as I was able to see all the connections come together. All the pieces were strewn together through the novel made sense, in the end, then I started wishing for another book in the series!

I loved the first two books in this series and I was delighted to be back on another adventure with Celia, Nick, and the rest of an dearing cast of characters. I loved Celia's dedication to her patients and stiff upper lip determination to do what's right, and Nick's gentlemanly admiration for her combined his conflicted view of wanting to protect her while acknowleging that she's a capable individual. San Franscisco of the 1860s comes so vividly to life with all its sights, sounds, and smells, the reader will feel they're right there on the streets wiith the characters, helping to solve the murder. The added mystery of Celia's husband possibly returning from "the dead" adds a secondary layer of intrigue and the promise of more to come in the series. I'll be looking forward to them!

If you like historical mysteries with rich characters, a compelling setting, and an absorbing series arc, you will love this book and the series it continues. The heroine has just enough vulnerability to temper her courage and strength. The hero has just as much angst and enough issues to temper his stubborn stoicism and dogged determination. The carefully constructed plot moves smoothly and the pacing is perfect. If the details—including the apparent red herrings—come together a bit too tidily in the end, you won't mind. She manages to leave her readers thinking, "What comes next?" Write fast, Ms. Herriman.

This is the third book in the Mystery of Old San Francisco series by Nancy Herriman.

This book is set in the post Civil War era. Celia Davis is a nurse that runs her own clinic just for women. On the side she solves a mystery or two in her spare time.

Celia was invited to the fourth of July festivities by Detective Nick Greaves at the end of the previous book but she has to take care of one of her young charges and has to cancel her date (I am not sure they would called it that). She does manage to see a bit of the parade as it is completing. Earlier, she had received news from the investigator she hired that her husband, Patrick was indeed dead. Then during the parade, she sees Patrick on the street talking to someone. He’s only there for a second and then he’s gone. Later she discovers that someone has killed her investigator. Celia splits her time between finding out who killed her investigator and whether or not Patrick is really alive and maybe involved in the murder.

These two books (bools #2 & #3) flowed perfectly together that I almost feel like they were written at the same time. I am enamored with Herriman’s pre-Civil War San Francisco and all the characters she has created within. Sometimes a historical cozy can seem dry and unappealing but that is not the case with this series. The characters just come alive on the page. Sometimes I feel like I am almost watching them on television instead of reading about them in a book. This series would definitely do well on tv, I think.

The mystery really kept me engaged and the scenes in the mental hospital were so sad. Nearly all those people they kept inside the facility surely didn’t need to be there. The mental health profession sure has come a long way. I was really rooting for Celia during this story to figure it all out. I mean, there is no doubt really, but I was certainly on the edge of my seat the entire time I was reading this.

If you love a good historical cozy mystery, you need to pick this one up. You won’t be disappointed. I was hooked all the way through. I wonder how long it will be until book four. Good stuff!

I received this as an ARC (Advanced Reader Copy) in return for an honest review. I thank NetGalley, the publisher and the author for allowing me to read this title.

No Quiet Among the Shadows by Nancy Herriman takes place in San Francisco in 1867. It is a murder mystery and involves séances and spiritualism as well as greed and fraud. It is always a sad thing when someone dies, but to be so overwhelmed with grief that you leave yourself open to fraud still exists in today's world. Fraud never goes away. This story tells how willing people are to take advantage of others, in many ways, not just spiritualism. It is also a story of revenge and so much more. Thanks goodness, at least in today's world, most women have rights and cannot be controlled by male members of their family or by husbands.

Detective Nick Greaves has been charged with finding a woman who has disappeared. He brother is certain she is still in the city but he has been searching to no avail. His brother has made his wishes known to Nick's bosses so that leaves him few options. Celia Davies stays busy with her free clinic for women and takes care of her friends as well. They are early in her relationship when Celia catches a glimpse of a man who looks just like her supposedly dead husband. This does not bode well for Nick and Celia. Owen, one of Celia's many protégés has come down with the mumps. This means her niece, Barbara, who has not ever had them, has to leave the house to stay with her friend Grace until Owen recovers. This opens the door to a deeper friendship for Celia and Jane, Grace's stepmother, which proves to be beneficial in the investigation of Dr. Brown and the whole convoluted mess with his fiancee. Between the two of them, Nick and Celia manage to straighten the whole mess out and find the missing woman, to boot. It was a mystery that took perseverance and tenacity to solve. I enjoyed the read. Hopefully you will, too. I recommend for lovers of historical mystery.

The Mystery of Old San Francisco series is set in the late 1860s, and features a Nurse dedicated to serving women in need while also assisting in murder investigations. It has proved to be a winning combination for me and I have quite enjoyed getting to know Celia, her ward Barbara, young Owen, and of course Detective Greaves. It has been several years since the last book, so I was very excited to step back in time and meet up with this crew again.

Filled with murder, seances, and a mystery tied to a asylum, No Quiet Among the Shadows has it all. It was well thought out and I spent the book trying to determine not only who committed the murder but why. I enjoy when the all the pieces of the puzzles come together and they certainly did in this one.

What I most appreciate about this series, however is Celia and her relationships. She is a smart independent woman who is not only serving those in need but also taking care of those she loves. Her relationship with Detective Greaves is not at the forefront of the stories but is definitely a compelling part of them.

I highly recommend this latest addition and would encourage you to pick up the first in the series, No Comfort For the Lost,if you haven't read them. Thank you Netgalley and Beyond The Page Publishing for my e-arc in exchange for my honest opinion.

San Francisco 1867 - just that was enough to get my attention. How did I manage to overlook this series? Now that I have been introduced to Celia and Nick I am eager to get my hands on books one and two. The fact that this is the third in the series and my introduction to this wonderful duo didn't lessen my enjoyment of the mystery. It stands on its own very well.
Celia is a nurse, running a woman's clinic in San Francisco and Nick is a police detective. Celia had hired a private detective to confirm that her husband, Patrick, is, indeed, dead. Within a short period of time, the detective tells her Patrick is dead, Celia thinks she spots Patrick in the 4th of July parade and then her detective is dead under suspicious circumstances.
If that isn't enough to fill every minute of her days, she has her family and friends with their lives intwined with hers vying for her attention. Still, she begins to search for answers and enters the shady world of scams and seances. Danger is in her future - will she find the answers before she becomes a victim? After this reading I have a spot on my TBR list for book #4. Meanwhile I will play catchup with Celia and Nick.
My thanks to the publisher Beyond the Page and to NetGalley for giving me an advance copy in exchange for my honest review.

This mystery involves Spiritualism and even has a seance or two included.

It is Fourth of July and there are parades and fireworks, and a few unexplained deaths.

Was the investigator Celia hired murdered or did he just fall out of his window while watching the parade? Who was that in his office soon afterward, and how did they get his keys? Where are the details of his current investigations, and does he have new information on Celia's supposedly dead in Mexico husband Patrick?

There are several threads, including a Dr Brown and his sister, who have attended the first seance, with Dr Brown's fiance, Vivi Adler, new to town. Where is Miss Kimball who also attended? Why can't the police locate her, or the missing person Connie from Los Angeles? Why is Mr Griffin spotted hanging around Celia's house?

Most of these mysteries can't be solved without a trip to Stockton where an asylum has proven to be the jumping off point for most of the characters.

I thoroughly enjoyed this investigation by Mr Greaves and Taylor, with Celia's assistance.

I purchased a copy of this mystery and the one that follows, since they are not available in my public library. I have assigned this series for my September reading group.

Celia Davies calm moment is interrupted when she believes she saw her supposedly dead husband. The investigator who had told her of her husband's death is killed soon after. The nurse sets out to find the truth, though the truth might cost her life.

This was my first foray into a Mystery of Old San Francisco. I will admit that it took a bit to get into the story because, as someone new to the series, I was introduced to a lot of characters. We rotate between Celia, Detective Nick Greaves, and a young Owen. There are undercurrents to the story that comes from earlier stories that I was lost on.

But this story was enjoyable. Once I knew the characters, I was interested in each one and what they were doing. Celia, a nurse doing what she could for other women, was a strong heroine to lead the story. The detective was less enjoyable, but his determination to follow clues made him enjoyable.

Well written and paced well, I would recommend this to fans of the series, but anyone new might want to start at the beginning to really appreciate the characters.

I received a free copy from NetGalley and all opinions expressed are my own.

I enjoyed this book so very much!! Celia Davies had just the right amounts of courageous daring and feminine vulnerability to make her extremely believable and thoroughly endearing. Detective Nick Greaves was true to the time frame the book was set in and had the stoicism and gentlemanly suffering of men during that era portrayed perfectly. The question of whether widowed Celia's husband Patrick is really dead or not is the basis for this particular mystery for this duo and it is fraught with unsavory characters in seedy areas and with terrible danger to Celia. This was a wonderful historical mystery set in San Francisco in the late eighteenth century which is a particular favorite time period for me to read about no matter the genre. I have already earmarked books one and two in this series to read so that I can see how this incredible detecting duo came to be.

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book provided to me by the publisher through NetGalley.

This was a detective story that takes place in mid 19th century San Francisco. One of the things it covers is the dismal mental health of women during that time. Nurse Celia Davies and detective Nick Graeves investigate the death of private investigator Smith who has died under mysterious circumstances. Their investigation leads them to a seance group and the backstories of the participants. It is a long involved story with many characters. This book is the third in a series. Celia’s husband had disappeared and thought dead but during a Fourth of July parade she thinks she sees him. This is really not a key part of the story but serves to disrupt Celia and Nick’s budding relationship. I found the book difficult to read possibly because I hadn’t read the first two books in the series. This book was an ARC from NetGalley.

This is the third installment of a mystery series set in 1867 San Francisco revolving around a British nurse, Celia Davies, who runs a free clinic for women out of her home while parenting a teenaged cousin and solving mysteries on the side. Busy woman!

While I have not read the prior books, I was able to keep up with minimal confusion. The plot was fine (a little convoluted), but I found the writing a bit stilted and lacking in smooth segues between scenes/locations which was distracting for me.

I would rate this a decent read, but I have read better.

Thanks to #NetGalley and #BeyondThePagePublishing for providing me the ARC. The opinions are strictly my own.

1867 San Francisco. Nurse Celia Davies is out watching the 4th of July celebrations when she believes she sees her supposedly dead husband. A few minutes later P.I. Smith who had confirmed his death is found dead in suspicious circumstances.
Detective Nick Greaves' investigation leads him and Celia to a suspect séance group and the attendees, but what is the connection.
A enjoyed the story, the mystery, and the character of Greaves. I really didn't take to the character of Celia and her seemingly demanding ways when it came to the police and their investigation.

The nurse, the police detective, the medium, the swindlers, and the dead body that is tangled up with all of them and more. I really don't know how to briefly summarize this one without getting tangled up in subplots and spoilers. I can tell you that the information about attitudes and treatment of women who became inconvenient and were put into asylums is historically correct for the English speaking world. I read it over two days and think that it's a 5 star read.

No Quiet Among the Shadows by Nancy Herriman is a historical mystery set in San Francisco.

A glimpse of the husband Celia Davies thought was dead, the murder of an investigator, seances, and women and wives who are troublesome committed to asylums. Some intriguing avenues for a mystery.

This is the third in this series, but I haven't read the first two books. Maybe I would have enjoyed it more if I had.

Oh how I missed Celia and Nick! A truly unexpected treat to visit them again, and with a moderate cliff-hanger, I hope to read about their adventures again.

It’s been awhile since I’ve read a Nancy Herriman book, so I’d forgotten her writing style. I was so pleased to find a thoroughly engaging, well-paced story that kept my attention from beginning to end.

Not as good as the previous books.

I love the setting and characters in this series, but this book was so very disappointing. I was plodding through the plot and almost gave up reading it. I finished but I don’t know if I will read the next book, if there is one.

I wish the story developed a bit more into Celia and Nick. I do understand why with the ending of the story. I did not like the length of the back and forth in order to find the discovery of the culprit. However, Nancy Herriman's writing style is enjoyable.

While Celia and Nick are working on a new murder, other mysteries continue to crop up. Starts with a seance, then a murder, then a break-in and then question about a death. Book moved slowly, but by the end I wanted more.

I love the vibe of historical mystery books. It makes me want to snuggle in bed, under a blanket with a cup of coffee while I read.

I enjoyed this book. The hunt for the killer was really intriguing and I’ll admit, I did not suspect the correct person. I also liked the “physic” aspect too. That added a bit more flavor to the book.

One thing that slightly irritated me was Celia. I dislike when a character puts themselves in danger or takes it upon themselves to play an amateur detective. It causes unnecessary drama.

This isn’t the first book in the series and I definitely will read the next! This book ended with something of a cliffhanger and I’m curious to see what happens next!

Thanks to NetGalley and Beyond the Page Publishing for this digital arc!

Filled with the atmosphere of old San Francisco, this book has mystery, history, and a touch of romance all rolled into one. Great characters that are fleshed out and pleasingly human, not perfect, the scenery brings you back to post Civil War San Francisco, and the mystery is multi-faceted. Great read that leaves you wanted the next book to read more about what lies ahead for Nicholas and Ceila.
