Amazon best-selling author Cathy MacRae enjoys weaving tales of romance in the Highland mists. Her stories feature strong heroes and feisty heroines in pursuit of their happy-ever-afters in medieval Scotland.
When not writing, Cathy can be found curled up in a chair with a book or enjoying the outdoors with a German Shepherd or two. She is currently working on another Highland romance novel and planning her next trip to Scotland.
The Cursed: De Wolfe Pack Connected World by Cathy MacRae 4.5 Stars. This enemies to lovers trope is a character-driven romantic story between the daughter of a Scottish border lord and an English knight. The borderlands are a dangerous place to live with plenty of hate on both sides. The English had seized a Scottish Castle and sent a small party of knights to clan Johnstone’s to offer an alliance giving the run of the keep to one of Laird Johnstone’s sons. The canny Laird made the deal but noted that his heir was to inherit his keep so the other keep would fall to his youngest son who was only nine years old and has not been groomed for leading. Then the shrewd Laird couldn’t believe his good fortune when one of the knights offered to marry his eldest daughter who had been betrothed four times before and not one husband to be had lived to the wedding day. She was cursed and her father thought, “what a wonderful way to get rid of one more English!” This was a fun read that I enjoyed with great characters, a witty dialogue, and a plot that kept changing lanes! I enjoyed this historical romance and I recommend it to everyone who loves a hea. Content Note: The romance only contained kissing throughout the book until the marriage night which appears at the end of the epilogue and there is only one explicit sexual reference on the second to the last sentence on the last page. Happy Reading♥️
The Cursed by Cathy MacRae is book three of her De Wolfe Connected World Series. Rosaline Johnstone is fervent that she will never marry. She has had three (well maybe four) betrothals and all of the men in question have died before meeting her at the altar. Walter de Ellerton is not convinced that anything will happen to him. She is the woman of his dreams, and he will marry her. Her father is not happy to see her home again after the latest death. Another mouth to feed. Her stepmother is even less happy to see her...competition for her own daughters, mayhap? Her half-brother, Elliot, happy she's home, but no one likes him either. He comes up with a plan to send them both off, and get something for himself in the doing. It gets complicated, suffice to say, the curse on Rosaline is broken, and Elliot is not the weakling his father believes him to be.
There are lots of good characters in the book. Elliot is a very interesting young man, never having been a favorite of his fathers, he has developed a fine mind and many useful skills while he was hiding away. Elliot also has medical skills which he uses mainly on birds and animals, but become increasingly useful. Some people are better away from their parents and on their own. Elliot is one of them. Her father believes so strongly in the curse on his daughter, that he seeks to turn it to his benefit and betroth her to someone he wants dead. Very clever. Things turn to the good and everything works out but it is a interesting journey to get there. An enjoyable read. I recommend it.
I received a free ARC of The Cursed from Wolfbane, an imprint of Dragonblade and part of the de Wolfe connected world. All opinions and interpretations contained herein are solely my own.
Medieval fairy superstitions haunt this sprightly story. Rosaline Johnstone and Sir Walter de Ellerton, the man who loves her, face a curse the fairies have placed on Rosaline. The story is a definite pleasure read, set along the border between medieval Scotland and England.
Whenever Rosaline becomes betrothed, the young man dies before they marry. Walter and Rosaline determine to overcome the fairies' curse.
Some characters, including the three younger sisters who are amply drawn, add a bit of slapstick humor. These spots bring light into a story that is primarily military type conflict. Because there is some military conflict, violence is implied, but not graphic. Sensual scenes are not explicit or vulgar. I liked the respect and affection between the heroine and her beloved. She’s a tough little cookie as she needed to be in those times in history.
I am a fan of geographic and cultural descriptions and would have enjoyed even more. The author does well with the descriptions that are included. Author, Cathy MacRae really 'gets' the picture for readers when we see the medieval life was not a bed of roses...rather leaves, rushes or if lucky, some feathers in the pallet!
I enjoyed this book with its unique characters showing humor, compassion and color. Cathy MacRae has a way with words that you as a reader will enjoy. She has written several novels set in the Highlands and medieval times.
The Cursed De Wolfe Pack Connected World Cathy MacRae ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Walter de Ellerton a deeply religious and a fervent keeper of the chivalric code, has made up his mind and found the woman of his dreams, but she will not marry him.
Why you ask? Well Rosaline Johnstone has been betrothed four times now and not one of her suitors ever made it to the altar. She truly believes she is cursed and can’t kill the man she loves by marrying him. Now caught between the machinations of a wily Scot, the ambitions of an English lord, a vengeful clan chieftian, and the mysterious works of the faeries of Eaglesfeild Burn, Rosaline and Walter must break the curse that she thinks was placed on her many years ago, or risk losing their chance to live happily ever after.
Cathy MacRae tells a tale of a love that was almost lost forever. Rosaline and Sir Walter were two delightful characters that I really got a chuckle out of. Rosaline was a strong feisty lady who listened to her own mind and Sir Walter is a wonderful English knight that at times almost seemed stunned at the way the Scots behaved. You never knew what was going to come around the next corner. This was a wonderful book and I can’t wait to see what Ms. MacRae comes up with next.
This is an excellent book to read. It is about Chief Johnstone of Millburn , His daughter by his first marriage Rosaline Johnstone, a younger son Elliott who was nine. Elliott was tall for his age, has a love for healing animals and stayed mostly in the Doocot(dovecote). Now traveling toward Millburn is are some English knights, chief Johnstone has decided to marry his daughter to Sir Walter de Ellerton. Rosaline does not want to marriage. She believes she is cursed because 3 other men she was engaged to all died. Her dad told her that if she is engaged to him if he dies that would be one less English. Now after meeting a few people it wii get down to the meat of the stories. The wily Maxwells are causing problems. There is a keep that has been given to Elliott!! To really understand what is going on I would suggest read the story.
Are there really fairies in Scotland? Aye there may well be and Rosaline Johnstone knows she is cursed because 3 of her bethothed have died! Her da was not glad to see her back after the 3rd but her younger brother Elliot definitely was. Walter de Ellerton has been given the duty to go to the Johnstone stronghold in order to watch after the son of the Laird until he is ready to take over. But one beautiful woman he has not forgotten is there, Rosaline. Could he have a chance at her hand? I truly loved this story so much. It held so many elements that grabbed my attention. A girl who wanted to marry but it seemed she was cursed, a belief in the fairies, a mean stepmother, a handsome Knight and a journey to happy ever after not soon forgotten!
An enjoyable read. I was pleasantly surprised. This is a new to me author. Here we have Rosaline Johnstone who believes she is cursed by faries, because her previous suitors have died. Therefore, she remains unwed and will not have something horrible befall anyone else. Sir Walter de Ellerton, the man who now has come to loves her, now must help Rosaline face her doubts and fears in order to be happy.
I enjoyed this story because it brings the belief of fairies being real in old Scottish times. The emotions and trials she has being betrothed and her belief she is cursed makes you want to hug her and shake her at the same time. His patience is exactly what you want in a hero. I love the animals in the book.
Rosaline, betrothed three times and all three have died , she refuses to marry , feeling she is cursed. Until Walter comes along and shows her what real love is and breaks the curse.
