Welcome to Brawlers Bar…

Life wasn’t easy when you were certifiable, Gerald “Psycho” Clemons lived on the fringes of society. Five years he hadn’t thought twice about riding with a group who saw most laws as flexible. When the leader of the group turned crazier than Psycho, he stepped in and made the man pay. He’d never been rewarded for his temper before, yet that’s what happened when he earned a permanent place and a job as a bouncer. Everyone walked a wide circle around him, and he liked it that way. One look from his cold black eyes and he had people backing up. Then he met a man who had to be crazier than him.

Decadence Bakery was Ben Morin’s dream come true, and he loved it, but he grew tired of his lonely existence. Six months earlier he’d turned on the open sign and hopefully changed his life for the better. Ben loved his small cottage in the middle of nowhere even with the 3 a.m. rumbling of motorcycles and loud music at the farm next door. Although one thing he didn’t love, was his new hobby of watching one of the terrifying men next door. What could a little harmless peek now and then hurt?

Sweet and older wasn’t his type, but Psycho couldn’t deny the need to possess the beautiful baker. It was stronger than even the insanity he barely kept at bay, could he have a man who looked passed it or would Ben run like all the rest?

Reread May 2022

Rereading some old favorites. Still love Ben and Psycho.

Reread November 2018

Psycho and Ben continue to be a favorite couple of mine. These books are sweet and easy. Nothing outstanding per se but they hit the spot.

Reread October 2017

I still love Psycho and Ben. They’re all crazy but you gotta love them. I enjoy these easy reads.

“I didn’t earn the name Psycho for being all cheery and shit.”

I couldn't wait for Psycho's book and it did not disappoint. He wanted a man of his own but didn't think he was worthy or could be gentle or nice enough. Who he needed was Ben. Ben was so awesome with Psycho. He did everything right.

It was good to see all the other guys, husbands, partners and kids. Throw in crazy Bernie and Stacey and you've got one kickass crazy hand picked family. I can't wait for Bull's story but I really want Harper's hint, hint. Sounds like she deserves someone to take care of her.

I loved Psycho as much as I thought I would. Psycho has been watching all of his friends find love and he wants that for himself but doesn't think he deserves it. His first meeting with Ben had me laughing so much. Ben turns out to be the perfect match for Psycho.

I loved catching up with the rest of the "family" from Twisted and Brawlers and can't wait for the next in this series.

M/M - I liked Psycho as he's oddly sweet despite his weirdness. He didn't know how to date and how to ask someone out. It was quite funny and sad to see him try. Ben was a good foil for him.

Middle of the road for me here. Mainly because I did not feel as connected to Psycho and Ben. Both characters could have used a little more fleshing out.

I could see their connection though it did not make a lot of sense to me.

More editing issues here. Grrrrr ... :(

Still worth my time overall. I’m loving this series.

I really liked this one - Psycho was the brawling giant that struggled to come to terms with social expectations. He spoke his mind, was upfront and honest and basically scared the shit out of people. Psycho didn't really know to gently love another person but then he met Ben and his heart, mind and body went into turmoil ! I loved how Ben took Psycho as he was and recognized the gentleness and vulnerability beneath that brawn. I liked these two ❤️

It's no secret I'm a fan of JM Dabney's work. I fell in love with her books with Twirled World Ink... Where it all started. During our time with that series we got glimpses of the Brawlers. You may remember Psycho from the book Scary. He's Elijah's bodyguard. The introduction to Psycho in that book was not likely one you'd ever forget. And though all these books are standalones, you really should read all the Twirled World Ink books.

Psycho wants a love like Scary and Tank have with Elijah. He doesn't know at all how to get a man like Elijah or Twitch. The poor man is so beyond clueless he had my sides hurting from laughing so hard.

Ben owns a bakery, Decadence Bakery, he's older than Psycho by a bit and he's a simple man. He's quiet, hes quite vanilla, and he's been burned by his former partner and boyfriend. Meeting Psycho is, well, like a door to the face .... literally!

My heart melted when it came to these two. As tough as Psycho is he's super soft inside. He's possessive of Ben but not in a horrible way. In a way that Ben never knew he wanted. Psycho opens his eyes to so much and in return Ben gives him the one thing Psycho craved more than anything... love.

This is an awesome book and with each Twirled Crew or Brawler that gets their happy ending it makes me happier and happier. Psycho will make you laugh and it will touch you, especially when you hear about Psycho's past. But it only makes you that much more happier that he has Ben in his life.
Great read!

3.5

Loved Psycho and Ben individually, and as a couple. Psycho's inability to properly date, and/or tactfully discuss anything, was cute, endearing and hilarious all at the same time. The pacing was good, and the cameos from the rest of the Brawler/ink family were lovely. Psycho and Ben were both insecure, and things might have gotten slightly repetitive there, but I loved them for the most part. What didn't really work for me was the sex, which is weird because the sex scenes from this author ALWAYS work lol. Psycho's 'dirty talk' came out of nowhere and had me cringing, and the D/s just didn't play well. Him calling Ben his 'boy' threw cold water on the whole thing, because there didn't really seem to be any build up to it. Yes Psycho is obviously a rough, hard man so that edge manifesting itself in bed is natural. It just...maybe if they'd actually done more than share a few short, gentle kisses before he went full dungeon master I would have liked it better. Calling Ben 'Daddy' later on didn't work either (it was only one time), but was totally cute when Psy did it jokingly in the epilogue.

Ben's parents' reaction to Psycho was unrealistic, especially because of the whole bail incident.

The thought of my Psycho living with Bernie and Stacey breaks me out in hives. Bernie is too much to take on a daily basis. Ben making that offer was bleh. Moving to the same town would have been enough.

Pyscho's 'psychosis' was more tell than show. Ok, he's awkward, doesn't say the right thing and emotionally stunted. That's like 50% of Americans lol. In Scary, more was made of him always needing violence, or having it call to him. He seemed more mentally unstable then. In this book, he just seemed to need fights to prove he wasn't getting soft, or when he needed to blow off some steam. There was no constant need to harm people.

Housekeeping wise, punctuation was a problem. I had to re-read the first couple sentences of the book to make sense of them; just an explosion of commas for no reason. You walk 'past' someone not 'passed' them. This is an issue in every single book, and I wish the author would get it right since she seems to love this phrase so much. I know good editors are expensive, but a simple once over by a (knowledgeable) fresh pair of eyes would have done this book (as well as all the others) a world of good.

Final answer - I love this author's characters, and her storytelling style. While a few things took away from five stars for me, I look forward to other books in the series. I'm interested in Joker's story.

I'm not sure what it says about me that I always find the more psychologically messed up characters to be the ones I like the most. After reading Crave and Twitch’s story, and meeting Psycho (briefly), I am so glad the author chose him to be the next in line for tales to be told. I liked the blurb and had a feeling I was really going to like Ben. Truth be told, Psycho isn't psychologically insane or deranged, he just grew up in an environment that shaped him into who he is.

I really did like Ben, and boy could I empathize with how he felt when he came face-to-face with all of these large, intimidating, gorgeous men out at Bull’s farm. Ben is a little older (early forties), has gray in his hair, and as he puts it, a slight middle-aged spread that no amount of nightly running seems to be getting rid of. He owns the bakery in town and has never spent any time with bikers, bouncers, or brawlers. He also has no clue what to do about Psycho who seems to like him but Ben doesn't sleep with men right off the bat, he needs to get to know them first, and be in a relationship. Well, Psycho has never had a relationship, so to speak. In fact, he doesn't know how to date, but he's willing to learn for the cute baker.

In all honesty, Psycho lacks most of what would be considered “normal” manners, and he scares most people away with his large size and scowling face. Ben, however, thinks he's gorgeous. Luckily for Psycho, Ben also seems to think they can get along, even with Psycho’s less than normal conversational style. It was actually super adorable watching Ben and Psycho dance around each other. Even cuter was seeing how Elijah, Twitch, Lucky, and Landon helped Ben to see that there wasn't anything wrong with what he wanted.

“On your motorcycle?”
“Yeah, how else would we be getting there?”
“I do have an absolutely safe vehicle where we’re safely enclosed in metal.”
Psycho snorted. “And leave you at the mercy of the jaws of life when you’re crumpled into a ball.”
“You’re a ray of sunshine, Psycho.”
“I didn’t earn the name Psycho for being all cheery and shit.”

Another wonderful addition to the series! Psycho and Ben are fabulous together and the mix of crazy secondary characters just spiced everything up. I wasn't so thrilled with some poor editing and a mix of inconsistencies, so I hope the next installment is better. I'm definitely looking forward to the next story.

I wasn't sure anyone was gonna top Scary for me..... But, Psycho, sooooo did. I might be a little bit in love with him myself. He reminds me of Shrek, but hotter and with a dirtier mouth.
Looking around at everyone all loved up, he wanted that, but just like with all the guys, he didn't think he deserved it, even though he was desperate for it.

I knew, when he saw Ben, that was it... and whether Ben liked it or not, it was the same for him. He really brought Ben out of his shell, he reminded me a lot of Elijah.. like, one minute they were all sweet and shy and innocent, and the next minute they were like Lucky, but not as mouthy!
I can't say I was a fan of the ex-wife and her new wife and I'm actually really aggravated that we didn't get to see what went on with the Sherriff. I was really hoping for some Karmic Justice for him... even though I should be used to it, because this author doesn't really give closure with the bad guys.
They deserve a worse fate! How can you not deliver that!!!

Other than that though, I loved these two, they're hands down my favorite couple from both series'.
I adore Psycho and I would love to see more of him and Ben.

5 well deserved stars for me on this one! I won't even mention the lack of question marks after each question!

I laughed so hard during this book. Psycho kind of reminds me of the Beast in the Beauty and the Beast...but more psychotic. He knows what he wants but has no socialization skills to get what he want: Ben. Psycho seeking help from his friends reminded me of every rom-com I've ever seen. Knowing Psycho's ex-wife was just as nuts as him made so much sense. I love how blunt and honest Psycho was with Ben. It was also nice to see Ben be so accepting of Psycho's crazy possessive ways. I'd love to see how Psycho and Ben end up coparenting with Stacey and Bernie.

Turns out, Psycho and Ben make a great couple in this a wee bit over the topic romance between a younger bouncer and an older baker.

I love that Ben is plain Joe type and Psycho is socially awkward in an aggressive way.

We have the circle of nutty friends and an ex wife who is nice.

Good silly stuff.

3,5 *

PLEASE READ FIRST MY RATING SYSTEM!!!

To my ratings (thanks to amazon I had to change it again and 'upgrade' it a little bit.
My old 3* is now a 3,5* and clicked with a 4*):

5* - very very good and rare (it would be a Blow-
Away-book like 'Liberty' from Seth King,
'Save the kids' series from EM Leya or
'Jesse's Smile' from Angelique Jurd), it's like
an A+

4* - very good and will be often reread and is a
WOW-book with interesting plot and surprises
(like most of Andrew Grey books) it's like an A

3,5* - a really good book, which will be reread a few
times (most romances where you can enjoy
for relaxing and during waiting times in
hospitals). I can recommend them definitively!
It's like an B+

3* - it could be more then a one-time-reader, but
not really an often reread book

2* - it was ok to read, but it's more a one-time-
reader (i wouldn't recommend it heartily, but
it was ok) It's like a C-, D

1* - sorry, but that isn't really a book for me (too
many mistakes, not nice plot, illogical, so an
absolut NO-GO). It's like failure in the whole
line, dismissed, repeat the class

The World I Want to Live In

If had a magical wardrobe, I'd open the door to this world instead of Narnia. Dabney writes real characters like no one else can. There's little else I appreciate more when I'm reading than a character that is wonderfully flawed but perfect none the less. She always presents believable relationships and not just between the MCs. Interactions between secondary characters are interesting and funny as hell. An extra bonus: important issues are presented without preaching. You need to read this. And I need to read it again-already!

Within a few pages I knew I was going to love this book; the kind where you get that excited feeling because you just know it's going to tick everyone of those boxes, and this latest installment in JM Dabney's world met all my expectations. It's full of big tough rough guys with hearts of pure gold (albeit hidden under layers of crassness, fighting and swearing) loving on someone who needs just that kind of guy in their life.

Cannot wait for Bull and Hunter.

Reread 2020

Okay, let's be real for a second. This one didn’t exactly have me screaming with excitement. After I jumped back into the Twirled World Ink universe and revisited the rest of the series, I thought, maybe I missed something the first time around. Spoiler alert: I didn’t. I’m standing firm with my original 3-star rating. I really wanted to love this one, especially after Psy's intriguing appearance in Scary - but... yeah, it just didn’t have that magic I was hoping for.

Let’s break it down, shall we?

First off, Psy. He was the character I was so excited to dive into, and... well, yikes. It wasn’t that it was terrible, but I just didn’t get what the author was going for with him. I get it - he’s socially awkward and has zero filter, which, hey, I can totally respect. But there were times when it felt like they were pushing him into this “dumb, naive” territory, and that just didn’t sit right with me. I wanted to feel for him, but instead, I was left scratching my head, wondering if I missed something in the character development process. The whole thing felt like a character choice that wasn’t fully fleshed out. Awkward? Sure. Charming or endearing? Not so much. It just didn’t land. At all.

And then there’s Psy’s ex-wife. Oh, good grief. She was a mess - like, a whole tornado of chaos wrapped in a villainous bow. I’m sitting there reading, and honestly, I’m thinking, “What did I do to deserve this level of dysfunction in my book?” She’s manipulative, cruel, and brings this dark cloud of frustration that didn’t even have a purpose in the story except to make me feel, well, uncomfortable. Maybe that was the point, but... it just didn’t work for me. It felt like the author was like, “Let’s throw in a character who’ll make everyone squirm,” and guess what? Mission accomplished. But not in the fun, “Ooh, I can’t wait to see what happens next” way. More like, “Wow, I need a drink to get through this.”

Now, I won’t say it was all bad. There were a few redeeming moments, especially when Psy had those little aha! growth spurts. I’m still interested in his character, don’t get me wrong, but it just wasn’t enough to save the whole story. It didn’t give me that wow factor I was hoping for. The plot didn’t feel as sharp or engaging as I thought it would, and the character development? Let’s just say it left me wanting more. Much more.

If you’re already a fan of the series, sure, go ahead and give this one a shot. But don’t expect any mind-blowing plot twists or life-changing character growth. It’s fine, but it’s just fine. Like that one song you liked for a minute, but now you’ve kinda forgotten about. It’s not terrible, but it’s definitely not the stand-out book in the series.

So yeah, in the end, I gotta say this one missed the mark for me. I’m still all in on the series as a whole, but this particular book? Big meh. Guess you can’t win 'em all, right?

When I first ‘met’ Psycho in Scary’s book, I wasn’t so sure about him. I mean to go toe to toe with a guy holding a gun to his chest and practically daring the man to shoot him…? But I wasn’t sure of him in the sense I was afraid at first he might betray Elijah and all of the crew. But he didn’t. He proved himself worthy of the crews by taking care of Elijah and being his bodyguard. But it was more than that. And in his story, we find out what and why.
P.S. This story deals with physical abuse and transphobic beatings. So be aware.
Psycho was raised by his stepfather, who believed the weak should be destroyed and only the strong survived. As a toddler, he didn’t know how to defend himself, but as he grew he quickly learned. He also quickly learned that by fighting back, he saved his mother from beatings as well. All he had as a friend was Bernie, his psycho friend and now ex-wife, and with her they finally escaped the hell they grew up in. When he helped save Elijah, he saw something he realized he really wanted. He wanted the love and acceptance Scary and Tank got from Elijah and the bond they all shared. He wanted that unconditional love. But who would love a broken, nutso man like him? Then he met Ben, and he finally saw a man he wanted that chance with. But he felt he kept messing up. He couldn’t get it right with Ben. Things he said, or did. He felt it was all wrong. At least until Ben reassured him it was alright. He loved Psycho the way he was, blunt, crude or whatever. He loved it all. It was hard to get through Psycho’s head, but he was trying. But one night there was an attack and it ended up with him and Joker in jail. When and if he ever got out, would Ben still want him?
Psycho reminds me so much of Lucky sometimes, it’s hilarious. He has no filter whatsoever. And sometimes it can sting a bit, but as Ben says, in a world full of secrets and lies, it’s refreshing to have someone who’s not afraid to say what he thinks. Now if Ben could just get Psycho to believe he’s worthy and that people, him especially, actually do love him. He’s not so broken as he claims to be. He’s just had a rough life. And he needs someone that can balance him out. Ben more than does that for him. He doesn’t take any crap off of Psycho and calls him out on his bullshit. It’s perfect. And Psycho is just as good for Ben. As Ben hits middle age, he doesn’t feel so attractive anymore and really hasn’t found a place to fit in yet, since he’s been so busy with work. Psycho loves every soft inch of him. So what if his middle isn’t a six pack. Psycho finds him and for him, that’s all that matters. They bring the best out in each other. Even if it’s a work in progress. Which all relationships are. They are perfect for each other and I’m loving these guys just like the rest.
J.M. is killing me with these series. It has made my day to read these guys and fall in love with all of them. Quirks and all.

REVIEWED FOR LOVE BYTES

I am a huge fan of this series which is a follow on of the authors Twirled World Ink series. These men are all big, brash and intense. They have all had pretty rotten pasts but there is a real sense of family that they have strived to build and that they work hard to maintain. They are fierce and looking for love and when they set their hearts on someone there is no changing mind for anyone.

Psycho had a volatile and dangerous upbringing until he escaped with a woman who would first be his wife then his best friend and confidante. He has absolutely no social graces and doesn’t read situations well. His idea of a date is to ask a man to come home for a fuck – which is exactly what he says to Ben Morin when he saves him from a nose bleed. No matter how often the other guys try to steer him right he still says whatever he thinks and consequences be damned. His total lack of filter is what made him so endearing – that and watching him try to navigate his first romantic relationship.

Ben’s upbringing was less volatile but he was always left feeling he was never enough. That feeling has stayed with him throughout his life as the men he has tried dating have never made him feel special. His last boyfriend was an epic douche who cheated on him and when Ben found out he packed up, sold out and left for pastures new. Working in his recently opened Bakery brings a lot of men though the door but it’s the tattooed and gruff Psycho that catches his eye.

It must be pretty terrifying to come into this group of battle scarred and scary looking men but Ben does so with gusto and is quickly accepted as the newest member of the family.

I do have to mention the editing which as has previous books really lets the story down. There are a lot of very simple and very obvious mistakes which really should be getting picked up before publishing. As I have also said before my rating doesn’t reflect the poor editing and is purely for the story – which was excellent.

I really hope the author keeps going with this series for a while as I am nowhere near ready for it to end.

**********Contains Spoilers**********

I enjoyed this book. I loved how much Psycho cares and worries about Elijah. Ever since Elijah first met Psycho he’s kind of adopted him, as weird as that sounds considering Elijah and Psycho are pretty much the same age. Elijah tries to give Psycho advice on dating when he asked as Psycho constantly wonders how his rough and tough bosses Tank and Scary got a man as good as Elijah. He wants to find his own man but has no idea how to find one. Elijah also tells him that he should get out and about instead of just working and fighting. He’s goes to visit Harper at Nightingales Bookstore and then Harper suggests that he should visit the new bakery. His and Ben’s meet cute had me in tears. Yes, it was weird as f*ck interaction at how awkward Psycho was but still bl*ody funny. Psycho’s upbringing was messed up, where fighting and becoming the toughest was the only way to survive, so him and his ex-wife/best friend Bernie leant on each other.

Ben is perfect for Psycho as he knows that Psycho is an a*sehole but doesn’t want him to change on his account. He notices the gentleness and vulnerability beneath all his brawn. I loved getting more of the Brawlers and Twirled Ink crew. They’re definitely total friend and family goals. Even if they all piss each other off a lot of the time, they’d absolutely drop everything if one of them is in trouble. Bernie was totally weird and I really didn’t like how she interacted with Ben when they first met knowing that Ben was freaked out when he came to see Psycho to find him in bed being straddled by a beautiful women and another one sitting next to them. Yes, Ben could tell that nothing was happening, he trusts Psycho and Psycho was completely honest about him and Bernie. I did find it funny how friendly Ben became with Bernie and her wife Stacey throughout the book and Bernie redeemed herself. I’m looking forward to reading Bull & Gregory’s story next I’d definitely recommend this book, series, universe and author to everyone.

**This review was translated into English electronically.

The beginning was a bit boring, but at the same time I understood what the author wanted to convey. Psycho has some limitations and problems, mainly in understanding certain concepts related to feelings and relationships, since he lived a good part of his life in places where there was no love, only raw violence. From the moment the two meet, the book comes to life.

The fact that Ben watches Psycho from afar could have been explored more. This is a trait of this author's writing that I have seen so far that I did not like. He introduces several subjects and themes in the story, facts that could be developed and make the book more complete, but he simply says something and then does not develop it. Go figure.

The story of Ben and Psycho was fun. I could read more about them, about the development of this relationship, about Psy's relationship with Ben's parents, and everything else.

It needs some revision, like all the others. I especially don't like names being changed, it turns me off from reading. The story was direct and simple. There were some back and forths, but nothing that caused drama; everything was resolved by talking to each other or with friends.

The "dangerous" situation here occurred with Psycho. Even with what happened, it didn't convey a real sense of danger or excitement that the event called for.

We have here: age difference, violence, bar fights, nosy friends, nosy ex, cheating ex, violence against a trans woman (mentioned, not reported), abuse of authority, homophobia, self-esteem issues, opposites attract, spanking and biting. Most of the themes were mentioned, but not developed.

Older, sweet men weren’t exactly his usual hookup type. ~Psycho

Psycho was crass. "Lady, it's not like people don't know you bleed." He was brash, without mouth to brain filter and yet, he had a hidden delicacy to his person. He wanted someone of his own. All he wanted was love. Someone to love and to return it.

Ben owned the bakery in town. Having come several months earlier to Powers looking for a change, he had only wanted to put his past relationship behind him. What he got was a leather wearing, tough as nails, fist fighting man who seemed to want him without thought. But what could a gorgeous, younger man see in him? After all, Ben described himself as a forty year old slighty rounded in the middle settled man. Yet Psycho proved that he could put the wild man at bay to capture Ben's attention.

Filled with high antidote, a scary ex-wife, whose intentions was to create mini Psychos, more friends who were more like family and here's one book I enjoyed. Overall, it proved that opposites DO attract. And that one shy man and another who was dying to belong deserved happily ever after.

I voluntarily and honestly reviewed this book without bias or persuasion from the author.

Again, this isn't really a standalone, Psycho has a back story with Elijah in a previous book, so it did take a little while to get the gist of his attachment without knowing the background that he's Elijah's bodyguard, but Elijah has sort of "adopted" him. Psycho has no filter, doesn't mince words, punches first and ask questions after.

Psycho is clueless about love (he has an ex-wife, but this was due mostly to escaping the harsh surroundings of their childhood) so, he asks Elijah for tips on how to find a partner (Elijah has Scary and Tank). It made me grin when he met Ben - he literally took the advise to the extreme, it was so sweet! Ben owns the local bakery and is older than Psycho, a little middle aged spread, silver at his temples and laugh lines next to his eyes - but to Psycho, he's perfect (and on the inside, Psycho's really a bit of a softy!)

Overall, this was an enjoyable read, Bernie was a scream and they eventually managed to combine themselves into a family of sorts. There is still the silliness with spelling and grammar errors - but the investment in the characters pushed me through. Finishes with an epilogue that made me smile wide!

Next book is Bull *sigh* bring it on....

From that review: " J.M. Dabney's explorations of the strange, sometimes twisted road to love between men who've been abused, hardened by life and their soulmates continues with Psycho.  The second story in the Brawler's series (see all connected series below), Psycho is employed at the Brawlers bar/club as one of their security men.  He does whatever it takes to keep the bar running smooth and it's employees safe.  He's also is one of those men barely under control at any given moment, only his boss Elijah, who seems to have 'adopted' him, easily brings Psycho back from the edge.

I swear I was in a good enough mood!

I don't know if it's because I'd just eaten a plate of rice and plantains but damn this was putting me to sleep.

I just really didn't vibe with the characters at all. Honestly after reading ~20 pgs, I started skipping around just so I could get to the end.

The parts that I did read (smexy times) were a bit cringey and the dialogue just made me roll my eyes so I really couldn't enjoy that either.

I was in a good mood going into this but I ended up putting off reading more and substituting with taking my French lessons. When you'd rather learn conjugations and tackle the French numbering system you know there's a problem
