The author says early on in the book that most of the time she is ok, but has flares of pain and illness. This isn't the reality for many who are chronically ill, many are consistently compromised. As a person affected by a chronic illness, I know that most days, I could commit to the simple "Boosters" she suggests, but not always. There are days I cannot lift my head or stand upright. I belong to internet support groups and know I am far from alone in this. Some days, we won't care of we can compliment someone, or do anything at all. We don't need to push ourselves to commit to something unless we determine it's worth the effort for that day. The blanket commitment she asks for is not emotionally healthy for many people in her target audience. Ditto for some of the "Builders", no way could I do the things she suggests in her every 3 month getaway suggestions. I mean, no way!I Living a meaningful life with chronic illness cannot follow a one size fits all formula like she puts forth.
But I do agree with the general jist of her message. I can discern the underlying needs this formula is addressing. I do modified versions of her ideas. I have lots of "bed projects" for days that I can't get around physically, but mentally I'm ok. I do get sunlight each day that it's possible. I load up on gratitude and positivity to get me through those days I can't lift my head. I focus on what I *can* do today, not what I can't. Mostly, I abandon myself with joy in things I can do that I didn't have time for when I was healthy.
The book is a nice "starter" for someone chronically ill. There is much, much more to having a meaningful, fulfilling life than is touched on in these pages. But it's a good, clear start. Although the author doesn't touch on the diminished mental and cognitive functions from chronic pain and illness, it's a reality. The writing style and layout of this book is very user friendly for those who deal with brain fog and memory problems.
Even though this book is targeted for people who suffer from a chronic illness, it can be applied to everyone’s life. I loved how simple, clear and easy the book was to read. The author is honest from the very beginning. She states that this book is not about healing, but how to live and thrive with pain. I enjoyed the Reflection activities after each chapter. It allows the reader to take time and analyze aspects of life that are in need of improvement. From Boosters to Builders: an easy and practical way to live day by day according to the person’s needs. Again, this book is for everyone, if not to help ourselves, to help others. We are in this together.
A Game Changer If You Struggle With Chronic Illness
This book. Wow. It’s powerfully written and exactly what I needed to read. The author describes the experience of living with Lyme disease perfectly. I know, because I have it myself. I can't tell you how refreshing it is to read something other than yet another "managing your symptoms” type book. This one is about living vibrantly, not just surviving a day-to-day slog with Lyme or other chronic illness. I’ve already taken several of the authors suggestions to heart and use them daily. I’m surprised how a few simple life hacks can make such a difference. But they do. If you’re struggling with your own illness, I highly recommend this book. It’s a game changer.
As someone who has battled autoimmune disease since childhood , it’s easy to feel defeated . This book is a refreshing reminder that you are not your circumstance and you can thrive through your battles. The author shares her personal battles with Lyme disease and outlines a beautiful plan for living not just existing with disease . If you find yourself recently diagnosed or have lived with a chronic illness for some time this book is a must read . Looking forward to more from this Author .

I have read many self-help books, but none have inspired me to change the way I see chronic pain. I’ll definitely be doing the challenge and I know this is going to be a game changer. Thank you for such an excellent work !!
I picked up this book on a friend's recommendation. I don't suffer from a chronic illness myself, but yet I got so much out of it! I think it's applicable to all of us, in dealing with the various ups and downs of LIFE! I feel very grateful for this book and the positive...
A very empowering and encouraging read for those dealing with chronic pain and illness... It's always so helpful to read a book that reminds you that you do have power and the right to make decisions regarding your health and wellness. One of the challenges with dealing with chronic illness is that, over time, you begin to feel as though you don't have power and control over your body and the way you feel. Your mind has the potential to get stuck in that place of discouragement and hopelessness when you're facing pain the moment you open your eyes each morning.
Goldman's book is not only encouraging, but it is manageable and practical. In the beginning of the book, she offers eight daily habits to practice to bring balance, encouragement, and motivation into your life as you learn to thrive even in the midst of your chronic illness. As she states in the book, "My focus here is to work on the inside- to help you eliminate the negativity and indifference that creep into your mind when you are living with an exhausting chronic illness. You can improve your mood and harness your new energy to live the life you want for yourself."
These eight habits are completely doable and the ability to accomplish them does not depend on your pain level. In other words, Goldman designed these habits to be practiced in the midst of any level of pain or stage of illness.
The second half of the book moves into what Goldman calls "Builders." These are practices that are not necessarily meant to be practiced everyday, nor are they all necessarily meant to be done by everyone. They are suggestions of activities that can continue to inspire and motivate you to thrive through your illness.
The whole book really resonated with me, an autoimmune sufferer of over twenty years now. The book is encouraging and practical and not overwhelming at all. I would definitely recommend this for anyone dealing with a chronic illness or chronic pain.
