Sparks fly when a sexy rock star is reunited with his small town, childhood best friend. With someone trying to tear them apart, can new love survive?

People think they know Jase Connors: former front man for Kings Quarters, successful solo artist, consummate playboy. They’re unaware of his humble roots, unmatched generosity and affection for his family. But Jase is tired from road life. Tired of road life. Just plain tired. He’s seeking solace and someone who likes him for who he is and not what he became.

This was a quick and fun novella featuring Jason (Jace) from Starfish. I really loved the premise of the "Dear Future Self" letters and how they played into Jason's return home. Things move very fast between Cami and Jason, but it worked since they had been childhood best friends and the foundation was already there. I do wish there would have been a few more scenes of them getting to know each other again as adults though. There wasn't a ton of drama and the ending really was perfect. I really enjoyed the narration by Tim Paige. He's a newer to me narrator, but I thought he balanced Jason's playful and bolder sides very well. Kelsey Navarro only narrated one chapter, but she complemented Tim Paige well. I wish that Cami would have had more chapters, so we could have gotten a better glimpse of things from her point of view. Overall, Dear Future Self was a fun trip back to the Starfish world!

I loved this sweet follow up to Starfish and found it so fun to reconnect with the band and particularly Jase who was a favorite in the first book!

The story follows Jase as he is forced to reconnect with a childhood friend after a beloved high school teacher dies and they must together, honor his final wishes. Of course, there are sparks. Of course, there is drama. And of course, Lisa Becker once again makes me fall in love with her characters!

A super sweet story!

Dear Future Self by Lisa Becker is a rock star romance novella that I listened to on audio narrated by Tim Paige and Kelsey Navarro.

This book is a novella spin-off of Starfish: A Rock Star Romance that can be read as a stand-alone.

I absolutely love Lisa’s books! I was so excited to know more of the Kings Quarters bandmates love stories. You can’t help but fall in love with Jason and Cami.

Tim and Kelsey did a great job on the narration. I look forward to listening to more of their work in the future.

I would highly recommend this novella to anyone who loves Rock Star Romances, Second Chance Romances, or Contemporary Romance.

In which I try to come up with a new way to describe the love I feel for a Lisa Becker book without repeating everything I've already said in past reviews.
Whenever I get a new contemporary romance novel from a favorite author (of which there aren't too many) I always hesitate before starting it. I know exactly what they're going to do to me and as much as I've loved past stories and will not say no to reading them; it's never something I'm ready for. It'll take me longer to get myself ready to start and work through the first few chapters than it will take me to read the whole thing.
This one was no exception.
And, like with past experiences, I fell madly in love. This was perfection at it's novella length I can only imagine what could have been done with a novel. We don't get a lot of time with these two characters but we still get so much from them, the way they're written will make you feel like you've not only known and loved them forever but have been waiting for this chapter in their lives.

Fantastic novella and short listen from Lisa Becker. She has a way of writing a story that just sings to your heart. Together with the performance of Tim Paige and then that final epilogue by Kelsey Navarro, it was just absolutely perfect. I loved every second of this sweet, heartfelt romance. It is always wonderful to have spin off books or novellas of books you really enjoy. It was so great to hear Jace's story, and still get that little appearance from Brad that we loved so much in Starfish. Great listen and highly recommend.

Dear Future Self: A Starfish Novella
Starfish: A Rock Star Romance, Book 2
By: Lisa Becker
Narrated by: Tim Paige, Kelsey Navarro

One of the reasons I loved “Starfish”, the first book in the series was the amazing characters, I was so happy to hear Lisa Becker was not done with them. Jase Connors was the lead singer of “Kings Quarter” before the band imploded, Damon, the band’s manager took Jase out on his own and he became a successful solo artists. While on tour his Mom calls to inform him Mr. Hancock, his HS teacher who he had a good relationship with, passed away. Jase returned home for the funeral, he also learns Mr. Hancock left something in his will for him. Cami Ossining was good friends with Jase, they’ve known each other since they were young kids, she knew him when he was just Jason McNamara, the kid next door and boy she crushed on, but he went on to be famous and forgot all about her. When Jase went to the reading of the will she was there, while he was glad to see her, she was not thrilled to see him and he could not understand why until he realized how he treated and ignored her. But the two had to work together to follow thru on Mr. Hancock’s last wishes. I loved how everything plays out in this book, also love how much story Lisa Becker managed to fit in this novella sized book. It is well written and cleverly plotted with plenty of drama, a bit of angst, some heartfelt moments and some hot romance. It was great to hear a little about Brad and Marin, great to see Damon has not changed his conniving ways, too NOT! So glad all works out in the end and they get their happily ever after. Thank you for another awesome story, I loved the premise of “Dear Future Self”, loved Cami and Jase’s letters too and Mr. Hancock’s sly move.

I listened to the Audible edition, Tim Paige and Kelsey Navarro are talented narrators and voice artists. Tim Paige is a rock star, he portrayed Jason perfectly, captured his personality and all his emotions which can be heard in his performance, he did a great job with all the other characters too. Kelsey Navarro knocked it out of the park in the final chapter with Mia’s POV, she too grasped her character’s persona perfectly. Both are entertaining storytellers and a pleasure to listen to. Thank you for another awesome listen🎧

Synopsis: People think they know Jase Connors: Former front man for Kings Quarters. Successful solo artist. Consummate playboy. What they don’t know is he’s tired from road life. Tired of road life. Just plain tired.

When a beloved high school teacher passes away, Jase returns to his Midwestern childhood home to honor the teacher’s final wishes. Sparks fly when he’s reunited with his childhood best friend, Cami, and is forced to confront choices that made him the man he is today.

Dear Future Self is a 23,000-word novella spin-off of award-winning Starfish: A Rock Star Romance. It can be read as a stand-alone and guarantees a happily ever after. For mature readers only.

Review: Another romance read (out of my regular genre) but a book that is so powerful that it made me devour it in one sitting. The book is a short romance book that touches on loneliness even when you’re at the top of the food chain. I really liked the connection to the previous novel (Starfish) and I definitely liked seeing the character development in this one. The writing was also very well done.

My only complaint is that the book was a bit slow paced for me, but it’s a romance so those usually are slower lol. The book was also really short and I felt like the book could have easily went another 50 pages with what it had, but that’s just my opinion.

Verdict: A well done romance novel!

(audiobook+ebook) I loved going back to the Starfish universe, this time following Jase/Jason after the Kings Quarters disbanded. All the band’s members were interesting, so of course I wanted to see more of them.

This time, we get a second chance romance, with a touch of small town and friends to lovers–though they kind of start as enemies. Music is at the center of the story, and the link between Cami and Jason even after so many years. They reconnected too fast for my taste, and I’ve had liked for Jason to grovel a bit much. But the idea of the teacher reuniting them after his death, and the letters he made the kids write, were both adorable.

Narration was very good, and I enjoyed the last chapter from Cami’s POV, performed by a female narrator. It was a sweet conclusion to a sweet story.

Quickie

- Series: Starfish: a rock star romance #2 (can be read as a standalone)
- Hashtags: #romcom #rock star romance #second chance #friends to lovers
- Triggers: N/A
- Main couple: Camille Ossining & Jason McNamara
- Hotness: 3/5
- Romance: 4/5
- + I love the premise, the idea that that teacher had such an impact on so many children
- – it’s quite short, and thus felt rushed at times

Do I love a novella that perfectly ties in with the original story without rehashing the same storylines? Yes.
Do I love a short story that can actually give great characters and plot in a short amount of time? I sure do.
And do I love a good character that has to return to his past friendship? There’s nothing better.
Becker does it again with a fantastic cast of believable and relatable characters that will make you turn the pages so quickly you’ll have none left!
Jase is a fantastic protagonist and Becker does an incredible job of creating a great character with development in a short amount of book space.
You can easily read this novel as a stand alone so if you’re looking to read some of Becker’s books but aren’t completely sure where to start or unsure if you want to commit to a full length piece - this story is the best chcoice!

When I won this book on a Facebook giveaway, I wasn't even aware that it was part of a series! As a matter of fact, it wasn't until after I read it and was looking at Audible, that I realized that it was a novella in the Starfish Series. So I totally think you could successfully read Dear Future Self as either a Standalone or part of the series!

I love the title of this book! To me it breaths so much promise and the book delivered just that! I honestly can't wait to dive into the rest of this series...that's just how much oomph it gave me!!

I think it takes a special writer to successfully write novellas because there's a certain delicacy between too short and too long...too much or too little information, but I think Lisa Becker just hits the spot with this one!

Anytime a book has multiple narrators, I get a little giddy! I love being able to easily distinguish which character is front and center, and I find it easier with multiple narrators. Tim Paige and Kelsey Navarro are a perfect fit for this title! I look forward to hearing more from them!

Overall, this was an excellent quick, heart-warming read!

I read and reviewed Starfish when it came out. I loved it and loved the sauciness of the characters. Dear Future Self is a wonderful novella focusing on one of the characters we met in Starfish.

Jase is an singer, one who is doing really well out there in the public world. But when he hears some bad news from his private world, he takes a step back from the public to focus on what he feels is more important.

Once again, Lisa has written an amazingly fun story with characters I would love to know. I love this series and really hope there are more stories to come. I enjoy my immersion into their world.

If I’m a sucker for anything, it’s a second chance romance. This novella follows Jase as makes his way to his home town and finds out he has been tasked to work with his childhood best friend. I usually find novellas to be very rushed and as if the story is unrealistic because of the time frame, but this.. this was perfect. You didn’t feel as though anyone rushed into anything, and you also didn’t feel like you missed out on anything because of the length. Would I have loved to read more about Jas(on) and Cami? Heck yes. But it was perfect just the way it was. It’s cute, sweet, to the point, and shows you that a true connection never fades.

Dear Future Self by Lisa Becker is a quick easy read that is perfect for those needing a short read to shore up those Goodreads Challenge goals.

The book centers around a rock star who returns home for a former teacher's funeral and runs into his best friend from childhood and sparks fly. I enjoyed the characters in the book and liked the book's insight into vocal coaching. It isn't something I know a lot about so it was fun to read about.

The book is a sequel to Starfish but can be read stand alone. (I haven't read Starfish yet but didn't feel like I was missing anything substantial.

Do you have just a little time to read?  Then pick up this novella and get lost in the world of music and romance.

This story picks up after Starfish but can be read on its own.  Granted you might understand a few of the characters and Jase's life if you do read Starfish first, but not required.

Jase finds himself back in his hometown working with his high school crush on a project for a teacher that passed away.  I wonder if the teacher knew that these two belonged together and just needed a nudge in that direction?  Whether that was the teacher's objective or not, it worked.  Jase and Cami become inseparable once again.  But the road to happiness isn't easy as a certain someone tries to come between them, testing their friendship and love for each other.

This is a sweet romantic tale that made me smile, growl at the bad guy, and even made me laugh a time or two.  Definitely worth the read.

Jase has to go back home due to a death of a favorite teacher who left him something in his will. He ran in to an old love who had him falling head over heels in love. He was ready to trade in his rock start ways and settle down with her. Loved the old connection rekindled! Quick and sweet story. Narration was really good too.

I loved this second book in the Starfish series! Even though is was a novella, I really cared for, and became invested in Jason and Cami's second chance at love. They were best friends who were becoming more when Jason left Cami behind to become a successful rock star. Now he is home for a funeral and he and Cami must work together to plan it. It is a bit rough at first with Cami feeling hurt from being forgotten so easily. But the more time they spend together, getting to know each other now, old feelings and desires come back to life. Jason wants to be a better man for not only Cami but for himself. But it won't be easy to make it work when their careers take them so far away from each other. This is a sweet, and sizzling romance brought to life flawlessly by Tim Paige, and a cameo from Kelsey Navarro. Paige really captured the feel of this friends to lovers romance. He did a great job with the different voices and his inflections were spot on. This is a quick and enjoyable addition to the Starfish series!

I’m so happy that Becker decided to write a little story for Jase. He was one of my favourite characters in Starfish, and his story is just what I would have wanted for him. I love second chance romance as a trope, and this one fit him so well.

This was a really cute and fast novella. Nice and light, but still full of emotions.

I love the idea of the “Dear Future Self” project. That’s so incredibly clever. It’s something I wish my own teachers had done.

**This review is for the audiobook on Audible.**

Dear Future Self: A Starfish Novella by Lisa Becker, narrated by Tim Paige and Kelsey Navarro is perfect for those looking for a short, sexy listen. At only 2+ hours, you will be able to finish it in one day, if you choose to do so. Although it is a standalone, I loved hearing the mention of characters from the Starfish novel (which is AMAZING by the way!!). This is the 3rd book I've listened to by Lisa Becker; her writing is engaging, her word choice is tasteful, and her characters feel like old friends. But, where Becker really shines is in her ability to circle around and write endings that are nothing less than brilliant! Bravo!!

The performance by Tim Paige was flawless, in my opinion. I usually listen to female narrators (I don't know why...it just happens that way, I guess), but he was awesome! I listened to the whole novella without interruption and not once did I find myself struggling to keep up. He was an excellent choice, and I'm confident you'll feel the same.

Kelsey Navarro's performance was short and at the very end of the audiobook, but her part is what made me love this book even more! I don't want to give anything away, but deciding to include a second narrator goes along with what I said earlier about Lisa Becker being an outstanding author. Having Navarro end the book was perfect!

Hands down, I give Dear Future Self: A Starfish Novella by Lisa Becker, narrated by Tim Paige and Kelsey Navarro 5 out of 5 stars! Fans of the romance genre will love it, and for those looking to try something new, this is the one I recommend. Not only will you walk away feeling happy...you'll walk away with the hope and confidence that love still exists. Yes, even today.

Thank you for reading my review. I hope it was helpful. Happy listening! :-)

This was such a fun, short, sweet story that allows Jace to finally get his HEA. Watching these two come together for a past teacher and work their way through their feelings was such a good read. This friends to nothing to lovers book and second chance romance is a perfect read for those who want a fast paced read. As always, I wish there was more of these two! That always happens when I read novellas.

I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy from the Author. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.Dear Future Self by Lisa Becker is a great short read for those busy days where you need to unwind with a steamy novella.
Will Jase change his playboy ways to be with Cami?
Jase
Jase was the frontman for King's Quarters and know he is a solo act. Just he isn't feeling it like he used to. After getting news about his old English teacher dying and that he was named in the will. Jase goes back home to find out what the teacher left him. Not only that, but to maybe finally get the girl of his dreams that is really in his past.

What I like about Jase is that he is a hothead at times, but that is just an act. He is a sweet guy when he isn't acting like a rock star. Jase used to be, and kind of still is a geeky kid that was in the church choir and choir in school.
Cami
Cami knew Jase when he was a little kid up until he changed in their sophomore year of high school, and he shut her out of his life. That hurt her, and she grew up as well. Cami is now a high school music teacher and lost a lot in a short amount of time. Although she is gaining a lot more as well.

Dear Future Self CRWhat I like about Cami is that she fights for what she wants until she doesn't have any fight left. She also doesn't put up with Jase's problems either.
Five Stars for Dear Future Self by Lisa Becker
Ms. Becker wrote another great book. In this one, we follow Jase and him finding someone that he wants to be his forever girl. He has a lot to prove to her and to figure out somethings about himself while honoring his old high school English teacher's wishes. It is wonderfully written, and I can't wait for more from Ms. Becker.

I am rating it five stars and recommend it to adult readers only.

Narration: 4 stars
I really enjoyed Tim Paige's narration, aside from his voicing of Cami, but to be fair I've yet to listen to a narrator that I've really enjoyed when they were voicing a character of the opposite sex (I'm relatively new to audiobooks so recommendations are welcome).
I would love to listen to more of his work.

Story: 2 stars
Jase Connors (Jason McNamara) is a conceited rock star at the peak of stardom. Cami Ossining was Jason's childhood best friend until the day he heard the school's popular girl, April Allen, make a snide comment about him being a 'choir boy' so he dropped choir (and Cami), joined the cross-country team and made something of himself. How? Who knows. Cami remained in their hometown caring for her parents and becoming the music teacher at their old high school.

A decade later Jase learns that his former high school teacher, Mr. Hancock, has passed away and he decides to return to his small hometown to attend the memorial/funeral. When he arrives he learns that Mr. Hancock has charged him and Cami with the task of planning his memorial and mailing all the "Dear Future Self" letters (a plot point that had potential but simply flopped) he had collected from his student over his years of teaching. Failure to do so means the legacy he left to the school music program will given as a cash prize in a gaming tournament.

I am not a fan of the second chance trope and this book epitomizes all of the things that I hate about it. A more ridiculous set-up I have never read. Piled on top of that is the fact that Jase's first thought at seeing Cami again is that she is now a beautiful woman (*eyeroll*), he barely apologizes for being such a self-centered asshole and ghosting her, she all but falls over herself jumping into bed with him (after, like, two days of giving him the cold shoulder), and they are declaring their undying love for each other after a week. The duet and memorial was a lovely plot point that was immediately overshadowed by a meddling manager. All in all, for a novella, the author tried to do too much and missed the mark on absolutely everything. I spent the majority of my time rolling my eyes and scoffing at the characters instead of rooting for their happy after.

The only reason I was even able to finish the book was due to the excellent narration and short duration (2 hours, so two commutes to work). Thankfully I picked this up for free during a "stuff your earbuds" event.

First up, if you haven't read Starfish, stop what you're doing and grab it now! I adored that story and this novella follows the lead singer in the band, so of course you should devour the novel Starfish on his band mate! Only seems logical, but if not this can be read as a standalone novella.

Jase Connor, he's one I was so curious about after reading Starfish! I'm so glad he got a story, but I just wish it was longer. Yet this novella was perfect for him and Cami.

After finding out his old music teacher has passed away, Jase finds himself leaving his recording studio to hop on a plane to his funeral.

Upon arrival it turns out something was left for Jase in his old teachers will. At the will reading he bumps into his old best friend and ex classmate Cami. She's all grown up and capturing his eye in a more than friendly way.

However Cami is very standoffish to him, almost as though he did something to hurt her. Jase has no clue but with the time they are forced to spend with each other in regard to the clauses in the will that need to be completed, they can't help falling a little for one another.

Cami and Jase fall back into that old friendship they had because for once someone likes him for the real him, not his rockstar persona.

With a bit of rocks coming in their way, they break through. This was overall a sweet and delightful short read, that has just the right amount of drama and questions to keep you turning for more.

Lisa Becker so quickly becoming one of my cherished indie authors that I can't wait to devour more reads from.

An ARC was provided by the author in exchange for an honest review.

I am not normally a fan of novellas, I am usually really doubtful on the insta-love aspect and I feel like that is all you can really get from a novella unless it is extremely well written. Luckily it worked out well for Dear Future Self because the relationship between Jason and Cami moved at rocket speed but it felt more natural since they were childhood friends that reconnect in this story. I loved Starfish so I was excited to get this story about Jace (Jason) but this one really stepped away from the rockstar world that we knew in the first book, it starts off years down the road with Jace having a successful solo career. Jason takes a break from a tour to go home and pay his respects to a former teacher that passed away. While home, Jace and Cami are forced into working together to fulfill their former teachers last wishes, much to Cami’s annoyance. The history between the two is great, it was easy to feel the connection but also the annoyance on Cami’s part. I am a huge fan of secret admirer and pen-pal romance so I loved the thought of “Dear Future Self” letters that the teacher made all his students write. Listening to Cami’s letter at the end was really the perfect conclusion!

Tim Paige and Kelsey Navarro really did a great job narrating. Tim Paige is new to me but he did a really good job portraying all the sides of Jace/Jason. Kelsey Navarro only narrated a little bit from Cami’s point of view but she did a good job, I wish she could have narrated more because I really would have liked to hear more from Cami’s viewpoint.
