This practical and knowledgeable guidebook deals comprehensively with the stone circles of Britain and Ireland and with the cromlechs and megalithic “horseshoes” of Brittany. This new edition includes a section on “Druidical” circles, romantic creations of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.
A comprehensive gazetteer of major megalithic sites, plus quite a few minor ones too. Arranged by region and giving precise (although sometimes out-of-date) directions to each site and a rating to indicate how worth it the site is. Handy for taking with you on a ramble but if it's anywhere too far off the beaten track you'd be well-advised to get a large-scale OS map and/or GPS. (The book does not give GPS co-ordinates however)
Essential for any stone ring crawler. A comprehensive, erudite and useful guide to the stone circles of Britain and Brittany. Burl's knowledge and understanding is unparalleled and although getting on this remains the best guide
this is a great reference book for anyone interested in visiting stone circles in Ireland, UK or Brittany. includes GPS coordinates and walking directions. alot of technical, geological and topographic info with a rating scale of the difficulty level for walking to.
This book is pretty technical, but has a lot of interesting information. If and when I make it to that part of the world I definitely want to take a book like this along.
Just what it says it is. Very useful for a description of the sites. Can't say I read it cover to cover, more one to dip into to read about sites already visited and those yet to be seen.
