At times the travel diary is a little boring but there are some hidden gems. Most of all it is interesting to read about China before it's great transformation. I wish there were more photos in the book.
I like the idea of travelling to China and I enjoy David Hockney's art but this book was a rather dull and lifeless travelogue which didn't give me much of an insight into either.
enjoyed reading about Spenders & Hockney's thoughts on each city and intereactions with artists and children. Written in 1982 before Tiannamen Square. Beautiful drawings.
