A nice overview of Rome as an empire in all aspects (culture, architecture, government, religion, etc.) with dozens of nice full page illustrations and photos. Just enough information overall to really pique my interest and to make me take notes on the “Further Reading” portion in order to get a more in depth history with some additional texts. This was a great starting point for a history lover like myself who had only some cursory knowledge on the Roman Empire.

“The Romans” was an accessible and informative overview of Roman life and history. The pictures were clear and enjoyable; however, if a new edition is ever printed, I would recommend a different font for the captions as I found the script hard to read. Furthermore, as always, I would love to see more maps.

Very light, informative reading, though lacks substance and depth. Easy read over the course of a few hours.

Nicely illustrated and full of interesting anecdotes, but I quickly realized that was going to be the extent of the book. There was no depth and the chapter headings were just groupings for random factoids the author gathered. It could have been embellished from a PowerPoint presentation. The final few chapters dropped it a star. Try this book to learn a few things about Roman history or to look at the pictures. Don't expect any detailed treatment.

Rather simplistic read but good pictures. Brief overview of Rome from the beginning to the fall.
