I have done some lightweight coding off and on since the ‘80s, so I am familiar with the concept of SQL though I have never ventured to try my hand at any projects myself. I'll admit that some rudiments of working with databases seem a bit arcane to me. I thought this book is a solid, hands-on introduction to SQL that helps the reader first get up to speed about the concepts that you need to know to work with databases, and this is followed up by a series of chapters that has you working with real projects on your own server. This isn’t some simple tip guide cobbled together from internet sources. It is a solid step-by-step book that will teach you the fundamentals of SQL (and perhaps a few more advanced ideas as well). I thought the book was relatively clear, as technical books like this can sometimes speak over at the true beginners’ heads. While I didn't have time to work on the projects while reading for this review, I intend to go back and finally conquer my fear of making a database and working with SQL.
I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.
