Once a fearful conscript into the team of warriors armed and deployed by the mysterious Gantz orb, Kei Kurono is born again hard in the invisible war against an endless stream of bizarre alien invaders. But the off-world intruders are now taking human form, and even a friend may be a foe!
A frighteningly adult science-fiction epic, Hiroya Oku's Gantz is a mind-blowing maelstrom of freakish horror, daring eroticism, and fierce imagination that has sold over 15 million copies in Japan and inspired three feature films and an anime TV series. This value-priced omnibus collection features 680 pages of tumult and terror!

Really getting my Gantz on! Another three volumes that I review in the omnibus format to better manage (reduce) the number of reviews I'm putting out. Volume 16 wraps up the internal strife amongst the Gantz players; volume 17 sees the now more united players facing the Oni Aliens, feeding into volume 18 where one of the Bosses goes all-out homicidal against everyone! In these volumes I can see how gradual the character development has been, but it works so well here, where it takes time for the players' minds to get to grips with their new reality. One of the marvellous things about this series is how Horaya ratchets up the distress caused, gore and intent of the antagonists. So many things I want to know more about; such a compelling read; there are 36 volumes in all, 12 omnibuses and I already dread reading them all, as I feel they won't be enough! 8 out of 12 Four Stars. 2024
Another brutal volume of betrayal, loss, and monster hunting.
I have to admit, I got a little lost with this volume trying to keep track of all the characters this time around. The Gantz group already has a few guys that look similar, but throw in a bunch of demon aliens and vampires, and I'm no longer entirely sure who is fighting who on any given page.
Still exciting though, even if I have to do a little homework afterword to get it all explained.
The first part of this omnibus is pretty good, with Kurono having to fight other team mates to protect his girlfriend, who is the new target gantz has assigned. Things take a sharp turn in the next arc, which sees some of the best monster design in the whole series up to now, although the action gets rather confusing; it seems that the team kill it’s target, but it keeps on going. Still, this is a world where apparently violence means nothing (remember how Izumi committed a mass shooting in omnibus 4? He’s still around and being postured as a competitive rival to kurono) and it’s intense and oh so gory.
Don’t get me wrong, I like Gantz and I enjoyed this section of the story, but I just don’t think I like the direction it’s going in. The vampires feel very out of place in the narrative and their motivations are unknown to us, and thats not a good thing. Not at this point in the story. We should know what they are fighting the Gantz crew for by now, so we know the stakes on either side. But we don’t, and that makes them come across as convenient villains, and one dimensional enemies. It really weighs down this side of the story and takes away from the actual aliens of this arc, who quickly become background characters.
this volume rounded up SO much of my griefs with the series as a whole mostly for the new characters being boring and having no personality to the lack of good fight choreography. the last couple chapters is what gave it the 5 stars 100%. between kurono and izumi finally teaming up with each other to more development for the characters and showing why i should actually give a shit about them etc. THIS SHIT IS PEAK.

It’s all about the art but I will say there was a nice turn in the main character where he seems more thank ever determined to fight harder for the people that were lost. At this point, I’m wondering how this ever ends. Gantz is known for people dropping like flies. So how many volumes of there will we get? I’ll read forever so not complaining just saying
No falter to the story here as the action remains frenetic and mystery remains mysterious as more details emerge but bring more questions about the world.
