An epic and action-packed conclusion to the first arc of The Echoes Saga

“I will teach you what I can in our time together but, ultimately, it will be your actions that define you, that guide you to your place in the world.”

This book surprised me, and I am genuinely pleased that I still have six books left in the series to read. Relic of the Gods is the third installment in The Echoes Saga series by Philip C. Quaintrell, and it’s also the conclusion of the first out of three arcs in the series. Although Quaintrell still played around with classic fantasy elements heavily, I think he has also succeeded in making The Echoes Saga stand as its own series while paying homage to the classic. The scope of the series has gotten bigger, and the battles in this book was more epic than what happened in the previous installments. It’s certainly an epic fantasy, and I believe the decision for Quaintrell to divide the nine-book series into three parts will pay off nicely. The author could end the series right here if he wanted, and it would be enough to make this a satisfying and entertaining trilogy. By including more books in the series, I assume with a time-skip implemented, too, Quaintrell has the potential to elevate The Echoes Saga to a new height.

“The ranger looked at the short-sword in his hands. “We all have something that tethers us to ourselves. Something we fear to let go of.”
Reyna leaned closer. “You don't need a sword in your hand to know who you are, Asher. There’s more to this world than fighting - you just have to let us show you.”

I won’t go in-depth into the plot here. This is the third book, and the story is a direct continuation of the previous book. In the first half of the novel, the characters are left dealing with the repercussions and revelations from the end of Empire of Dirt. I need to remind you that The Echoes Saga is not a grimdark fantasy series. Recapturing the greatness often told in the classic fantasy story of good versus evil plus the importance of cooperation and unity in times of war are incredibly dominant themes in Relic of the Gods. And on this, Quaintrell did a superb job.

“They weren't her people, yet Reyna saw them for what they were; people. Unlike many of her kin, the princess could only see what they had in common, what united them. Human or elf, both lived for their loved ones, to protect, provide, and enjoy what time they had together.”

Relic of the Gods and several other self-published fantasy books (like Dragon Mage by M.L. Spencer) also made me realize just how much I enjoyed reading tales about Dragonriders in adult fantasy genre. Just think about it, maybe it is due to how frequently they appear in classic fantasy, but stories about Dragonriders do not exist as often in the current fantasy market, specifically in traditionally published fantasy. The appearances of the Dragonriders are one of the main reasons why I love The Echoes Saga, especially in Empire of Dirt and Relic of the Gods where the Dragorn and their bonds with their dragons are highlighted extensively. I simply can’t get enough of reading them, and moving forward with the series, I sincerely hope there will be more coverage on them.

‘“This isn’t how we win…There’s no room for us and them in this war, Father. I have seen our enemy and he makes no distinction between our two shores.”’

As far as character goes, Quaintrell did a great job balancing the character development for the main POV characters of the series so far. However, my assessment stands that Asher and Gideon Thorn remain firm as my favorite characters of the series. Gideon Thorn, in particular, has to be my utmost favorite if I have to choose only one favorite character in the three books in the series I've read so far. This is not an easy decision to make. As I mentioned at the beginning of this review, the scope of the series is bigger, and the same notion is also applicable to the cast of characters. Thankfully, the growing number of characters didn't end up becoming an issue for the narrative because Quaintrell infused enough distinct voices into each character. It was rewarding seeing how far the characters and their relationships developed since their first appearance in Rise of the Ranger.

“A golden dawn graced the green fields of Velia, its light promising the hope of a new day. Tauren Salimson had learned long ago that hoping achieved nothing; he had to fight for everything.”

With all the positive things said, was Relic of the Gods my favorite of the three books in the series so far? Unfortunately, I have to say no. It's worth knowing that Relic of the Gods featured a LOT of battle scenes. About half of this book are detailed battle scenes, and there were moments before the Battle for Velia transpired where I felt the battle scenes happened a bit too often that it slightly disrupted the compelling pacing of the narrative. This, however, doesn't affect my overall enjoyment too much. In Relic of the Gods, Quaintrell managed to imbue some of the most memorable scenes of the series so far. Storm of fire, breathtaking inferno, glorious entrance scene, tension-packed duel, and many dragons, I definitely didn't expect the conclusion to the first arc of the series would be this grand.

“Never rely on your sword, Asher, Nasta had lectured all those years ago. A man with a weapon in his hand believes he is invincible against an unarmed opponent. That belief makes him reckless, even more so if he is accompanied by others. This is to be exploited. Your enemies will be dead before they realise that you are the weapon.”

I don't have much else to say regarding Relic of the Gods. Some pacing issues aside, this was a concluding installment that achieved two results: satisfaction and excitement. It was a satisfying conclusion to the first arc of the series, and it made me so excited to read the rest. If the conclusion of the first trilogy in the series is already this good. I envision the second and third trilogy will be even more awesome. And my god, if they really end up being better, then it's just a matter of time before I consider The Echoes Saga one of my favorite series.

“You cannot love more superiorly than another,” Reyna countered. “I have seen their capacity for love and I see no difference between us. There’s no reason why we can't live together, in peace.”

I feel really ambivalent about this book. I enjoyed some parts but I‘m mostly glad this experience is over. This third book dragged; to be honest, I pushed through mainly because I wanted to finish this initial trilogy. To top it all off, my favorite character died so I was not amused at all.

My main issue, however, as mentioned in my previous reviews, was that I could not get past the awkward prose. It somewhat ruined any redeeming qualities this book and this series had. To be fair, those redeeming qualities, which are also responsible for my ambivalence, exist; there were times when the plot was engaging and I did care about the characters‘ fates. However, while I did care, I just wasn’t invested in them (apart from that one MC who dies) and that makes or breaks a book for me, along with the quality of the prose – the latter of which has never been an issue for me before. The ending also felt forced and rushed and ultimately too cheesy; everything was made to fit, which left me feeling dissatisfied.

On a more random note, the umlaut "ö" used in some of the names (e.g. Galanör, Tassariön, Mörygan Mörgö) left me to wonder what they were supposed to signify. Either it is meant to indicate pronunciation or it is meant to convey a sense of aestheticism; if the former is the case, the German “ö” doesn’t sound pretty and fae-like, if it’s the latter I also fail to see any beauty in it. We already know that the author used names “inspired“ by Tolkien‘s nomenclature. It could then be an homage to Tolkien; however, Tolkien often used diacritics to indicate that two successive vowels were to be pronounced in two distinct syllables (e.g Eldalië, Eärendil). See, there it makes sense. Here, it just bothers me that, to my recollection, it is never used in that way. I‘m aware it’s just a detail and that most probably feel this is a non-issue, and that’s ok. The use of an umlaut on its own definitely didn’t make me dislike this book; it’s just a symptom fanning my discontent.

All in all, part of me wants to know what happens after this trilogy, in this 9-book series, but I’m not sure if I want to subject myself to the pain the prose inflicts on me again. But we’ll see. There is no shortage of glowing reviews, which is why I really wish I had loved this as so many others do.

Relic of The Gods

Epic/High Fantasy

“That thing between your ears is more powerful than any weapon made in a forge, Nasta had said. Use it. Make your emotions serve you not command you. When you have perfect control over your mind you will have perfect control over your body. This is the balance all Arakesh must achieve…”

The first arc of the Echoes Saga is complete- and it did not disappoint. It was action packed, fast paced and all the things that makes this type of fantasy appealing. I enjoyed this buddy read, the ending was bitter sweet and has me holding my breath for the next arc of the series.

My Quick Takes:
- 4/5 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
- Genre 📚 epic fantasy
- Language 🤐 moderate
- Spice ❤️‍🔥 fade to black
- Content 🤔 death, killing, themes of war/torture

An epic conclusion to the first trilogy in The Echoes 9 book saga.

If you’re worried about taking on a 9 book saga, this third book wrapped up nicely and is a great stopping place to take a break between books if you continue to read the series. In this book we finally get the epic battle where all the points of view and plot lines converge.

I liked this book more than the first and second book, I was more invested in the plot. I still struggled to be emotionally invested in any of the characters. I really can’t put my finger on why. I tried to start this book on my kindle, but since I listened to the first two I had to switch to the audio at around 30% to finish out the book.

I read this with a book club and the general consensus seemed to be that if someone struggled to get into John Gwynne’s Malice (that we read earlier in the year), that they loved this series. I was the opposite, I loved Malice and it took me a lot longer to get into this series.

I am a bit shocked by how this story ended. My heart is slightly broken with the loss of such an amazing character. I was even waiting while reading the epilogue of them walking in to explain where they’d been. It was great watching all the strings of the plot come together, but I truly thought with this being an epic fantasy adventure that we’d see all the same characters throughout the whole series. Just between me & you I cheated & peaked at the next book to see if my favourite character made an appearance. There are some characters like Nasta, do we hear what happens to them? Do we find out what happened to the Graycoats? Or are there questions I read about in book 4?

A really solid ending the first Arc of the Echoes Saga.

There were times that I was afraid Quaintrell was going to lose his hold on all of the different plot points (and I still think there was probably too much going on), but the ending was very satisfying, and I’m excited to continue on with Book 4.

This is one of the better self-published Epic Fantasies out there, and I highly recommend it for Sanderson fans!

Feel mixed to positive on this one. The action scenes are phenomenal, but a lot of other things didn't click for me. I was expecting more character growth and plot complexity after book 1. Instead it was more of wheel spinning to get to the next battle, some clunky prose where characters sometimes said obvious things, too many conveniences, and a wrap up to a series that felt rushed. Overall, I did have a good time though. Not sure how I feel about reading more from this author as of yet.

Wow. How to start this......? Well, a LOT of things happen in this book as it is the first conclusion of the first trilogy. Everything was building and building until we got to the final climax at the end of this book. The people and places that we had been reading about in the previous books all came together, both geographically and through alliances.

I will say this, there were moments in the first book that felt like things dragged. I mentioned it before- the pacing was uneven and it FELT like a long book. In the second book, the pacing evened out and it was easier to read - especially as things started ramping up. Well, in this book, I didn't even feel like I took a breath. I didn't notice the chapters flying by and I was COMPLETELY invested by the very end.

So, the ending. Well, the story arc for this trilogy is completed. Most things were tied up nicely and questions were answered. Not everyone made it out and that was sad and particularly heartbreaking in one case- but for the amount of fighting that occurred, I think we were luckier than we could have been. I can see now how you could take a break in between trilogies in this series. There was a prologue for the next book and we are going to jump 30 years into the future for the next story arc.

Will I continue with the series? Absolutely. I think though, I might take a break and dive into a couple of other genres first. This was some heavy reading and knowing me, once I start book 4, I'm not going to stop until I read books 4,5, and 6. I think a break before the next 2400 pages might be nice.....

Another thrilling ride in the world of Verda. All our beloved characters are here and slowly gather together to fight Valanis and his cohorts. There’s a little bit of romance which reminds us that there’s a darn good reason to stay alive. We wonder who will fall and who will survive. The development of Gideon and his talents alongside his dragon, Ilargo, is an amazing journey to follow. He really steps into his own in this book. He matures greatly here.
The battles are incredible to read. You just hold your breath and wait to see the outcome. By this third book, you are very invested in the fates of the characters. I think we’ll be seeing more of some of the secondary ones in future books like Tauren, Hadvabad, and Doran. By the end our friends are scattered to our realms but I hope to see them together in the future.

This is book 3 of the Echoes Saga by Philip Quaintrell. It’s turned out to be one of the best fantasy series I’ve ever read. Each book gets better and better which is crazy. Absolutely love Quaintrell and I hope he never stops pumping out more books. When this series comes to an end, it’s going to be a very sad time for me hahaha. I’m currently on book 4 of 9 so luckily I still have ways to go. I highly recommend this series to fans of John Gwynne. The character development is second to none. I’m absolutely in love with these characters hahaha.

I loved the second half of this book, with the big battle and then the final fight.
I knew the series is divided into three trilogies but I didn't think they'd be basically autoconclusive. Which is really good for me as I almost never binge read a series.
Even though there are still questions left unanswered, I feel like you could probably just stop reading here and feel satisfied.
I'm glad Gideon got his hero moment in here. Him and Ilargo are my favorite characters. I also like his friendship with a very interesting elf that I hope will get more page time later on.
I was a little bit disappointed in Tauren. I thought he was a cool new POV in book 2, but here he's not very important at all...
The romance. Well, I didn't particularly care, but I guess it was sweet.
I'm definitely going to keep reading the series and I do hope my favorite characters will still be there!

A fitting conclusion to the first storyarc in the series. It's almost as epic and grand as LOTR. I enjoyed it a lot. Quaintrell is a talented storyteller who balances plot, action, worlbuiding and characterization pretty well. This third book is an dynamite in terms of everything that an entertaining fantasy has to offer.

It's tropey, but for me, the age-old tropes never get stale if they're done well, and the author portrays them excellently here. This book covers the big war that's coming to the world of men. And, the world's history is turned upside down after the revelations of the Dragorn's existence. The most likable thing is seeing the growth of the characters, and their interpersonal relationships which was emotionally relatable.

Readers who love epic action will find a feast here. Elves, dragons, savages, and magic clashes in a chaotic mayhem which was amazing and terrifying to read. It was cinematic. The ending wasn't neat, but it was well executed in favor of the narrative. I believe that we haven't seen the last of our favorite Ranger as well. Rest said, there are still a few unsolved quotients which I believed will be explored in the later books.

This series doesn't do anything new in the genre, but, people who adore classic epic fantasy, gritty quests and adventures, and dragons are going to love this. It's pure fun, and Quaintrell has the ability to entrap the reader in his fantasy world. I would definitely check out the next books in the series, after a break of course.

Relic of the Gods is where The Echoes Saga truly comes into its own. The scope is massive—gods stirring, empires shifting, and ancient powers awakening—and yet it never loses the emotional core that makes this series so compelling. Every decision feels weighty. Every battle has consequences.

Quaintrell delivers masterful tension in this installment. The plot weaves together seamlessly with new revelations that reframe what you thought you knew from earlier books. The magic system gets more complex, the stakes feel so high, and the moral lines continue to blur.

The ranger remains a standout character—still brooding and battle-worn, but now increasingly haunted by purpose. Watching him navigate loyalty, leadership, and loss was one of the highlights of the book. And the supporting cast continues to evolve in fascinating ways. No one feels safe, and that makes for a genuinely gripping read.

This is epic fantasy that is bold, emotional, and absolutely addictive. Quaintrell is building something extraordinary, and Relic of the Gods is proof that this saga isn’t slowing down—it’s just getting started.

I absolutely loved this book. What stood out the most for me was the continuation of the story of the Dragorn and Dragons. I greedily soaked up each and every chapter there was enjoying each one more and more. The rich history, the struggles and the bonds shared with the Dragons is truly amazing.
The story continues with our heroes entering an epic battle against the forces of evil in all it’s forms. I loved the fact that all the characters came together as one to fight for a common cause, sadly some didn’t make it (again). The author seems to like to do this; make you love a character then kills them off..!! This is still shocking and refreshing at the same time and keeps things interesting.
I have come to respect this authors work more and more as I read through this series and am thoroughly enjoying myself.. :)

No No No!!

I can say honestly if this book would have ended without killing of my favorite character it would have received 5 stars but i have never been more disappointed in a ending in my life. I will not read anymore of them not because i think Philip is a bad writer but because i will just think about that character the hole time.

I can not say enough good things about this book. I did not want this first trilogy to end yet I couldn't finish it fast enough to find out what happens.

Three books in and this series has to be one of the all time best in the genre. It literally has EVERYTHING fantasy has to offer. Take all your favorite authors and things in the genre and put them together and this is what you would get.

I've come to love the characters so much that they almost feel like family. I laughed with them and I cried with them. I wanted only good things to happen to them and only the best for them. But life doesn't always give you happy endings. I thought this was a great ending to the first trilogy and a great tease to the next.

Also, the first three chapters are great and riveting! I was literally pumping my first into the air with joy.

If you're a fan of the fantasy genre or fan of reading at all, I can not recommend this book enough!

Relic of the Gods

Relic of the Gods is the 3rd book in The Echoes Saga and the conclusion of the Relic Trilogy.
The trilogy as a whole embraces many of the familiar epic fantasy tropes as well as a fair number of the common “traditional” fantasy values, such as the ragtag group of heroes coming together from different backgrounds to prevail against evil.
I felt that the story was very evenly paced and the characters were mostly all fleshed out in a way that allowed you to feel like you knew them, even though there were a few characters that I wish had a little more time on the page and larger roles, but I guess not everyone can be in the spotlight.
Overall, the book was definitely worth the time I spent reading it, the conclusion was extremely satisfying and it rounded everything off nicely with no loose ends, as well as paving the way for the next trilogy in the Saga. Highly recommend!

Okay so I'm really loving the world and the characters in this series and I know we are in the begining but things are falling into place and I have a feeling books 4 on are going to HITTTTTTT

This book would be a knockout if I loved battle sequences because there are some great ones, but personally I'm not really into battle sequences but honestly besides some funky dialogue (lol Philip told me it gets better and I trust him) I really loved this. I was surprised what characters I ended up enjoying in this one ...no one as much as Asher but there are some contenders for second place in my heart.
