After being fired, Lu Qingjiu finally decided to return to his hometown to farm.

At first, he started raising a pig, and then he found that the pig could solve more high-level math questions than he could.

After that, he started raising a flock of chickens, and then he found that his own fighting ability was one-tenth of that of a single chicken.

Finally, Lu Qingjiu finally realised that this old home wasn’t quite right… Especially a certain person by his side who constantly stared at him day in and day out.

Lu Qingjiu: “Are you drooling because of the spicy stir-fry I’m holding or because of me?”

Bai Yuehu pointed at the stir-fry.

Lu Qingjiu: “Then can you let go??”

Bai Yuehu reluctantly glanced at Lu Qingjiu’s arm, before loosening his teeth.

my first novel by this author and i literally couldn’t put it down bc these characters and their hilarious antics were so good!!!!! it has several horror/grotesque elements that are pretty intense, but this is without a doubt a laugh-out-loud story!

Lu Qingjiu (attuned to spirits, lover of all things fluffy, self-appointed 'father' of all his residents, swears he has gong vibes but is actually the shou, plus pro chef my god the food p0rn in this book) returns to the countryside for 'personal reasons,' only to encounter his future husband aka a good-looking fox(?) spirit Bai Yuehu who’s always hungry, his childhood friend Yin Xun whose cooking and [redacted] causes intense diarrhea, a female ghost w luscious locks, 2 sassy lil piglets who help the kid next door solve math problems, and other strange animals/spirits coupled w some creepy happenings oOoooOOOo~

the romance is slow burn but when the sweet scenes come, they punch you right in the heart! also Yin Xun is the most precious child and must be protected 🥺

[lu qingjiu & bai yuehu dynamic]
lu qingjiu: you won't eat me, right?
bai yuehu: depends on how i'd be eating you
lu qingjiu: huh???

overall a super light fluffy read that i highly recommend to anyone looking for a comedic fantasy w slight horror elements!

no one:
literally no one:
bai yuehu: iM a fOX

The comedy, friendships and main character’s fluffy relationship kept me reading. I avoid horror stories and this has some creepy sections. But, mostly this is about well developed characters in a world filled with fantasy and fantastic creatures that blend almost seamlessly into modern times.

The author created interesting creatures that could do well in an animated film or drama. Worth reading a few times for the comedy and romance.

“His browsing records showed that he had only visited a few automobile forums. He hadn’t looked at any porn flicks or any Animal Planet.”

“Can I ask what this is?”
“It’s a truck.”
“…I know it’s a truck. I’m asking what it was before that.”

“I was calculating the respective fighting capabilities of you and the chicken…Ten against one.”
“I can beat ten?”
“Ten of you can beat one.”

“Yin Xun was currently engrossed in fighting with a weed from the side of the path.”

“Lu Qingjiu didn’t know what effect being married to a tree would have, but at present, it seemed to be having a positive influence.”

“He knew Zhu Miaomiao, this thing, all too well. Don’t be fooled by her sweet words, if he really let her in, this toilet would be surnamed Zhu.”

“Tell me, what do I need to get you to return my umbrella?”
“Wait for me to finish eating it.”

“…for dinner Lu Qingjiu decided to keep things simple[!?], so he fried a couple of eggplant boxes, made white meat with garlic and cold chicken, and stir-fried a bitter gourd, and served a main course of hung noodles in a tomato soup with fresh lettuce leaves and a lotus egg, which was very refreshing.” …simple MY ASS

“Grandpa, calm down, look at me, I don't look like a white egg.”

“Yin Xun is a little embarrassed, but I can't blame him, after all, he's had his butt eaten, leaving him with only his knees slightly above, so you can't ask him to wear trousers, how can you wear trousers without a butt?”

I would like to politely inquire whether the author is quite satisfied in their torture of their readers concerning the blatant excess of food porn contained in this novel? I am now hungry for things I never knew existed.

Long story short: Dude gets fired from his job in the city, and decides to move back to the provincial farm house that his grandmother left behind. Intending to become a sweet potato farmer, he realizes that the farm isn't...normal.

Soon he encounters supernatural beings that should have been the subject of horror stories, but the interactions are so hilariously out of this world, I wanted to ask what the author had been smoking when she came up with these crazy scenarios. Each chapter also talks a lot about recipes and cooking. It's like "Para Agua Como Chocolate" (a tragic story where each chapter starts with a recipe) comedy version. There is nothing deep about this novel, but I really appreciated not only the lessons about food, but also the introduction to Chinese mythical creatures. I had a hard time putting it down, mostly because I couldn't stop laughing. This can be categorized under slice of life and magical realism. I just couldn't give it 5 over 5 stars because the author sometimes forgets certain things from earlier chapters, and then there'd be later situations that'll completely be contradictory to them. Still, it's a lot of fun. This definitely needs a manhua version.

did-not-finish
November 19, 2023
Stopped around 56% through the novel. I honestly couldn't finish it because Bai Yuehu irritates me too much. I get that he's a mythical creature and doesn't behave like a human, but it's not a very great feeling to read about how detached he is towards everything. All BYH knows is to eat, looking at him really gives me the feeling of "hating iron for not becoming steel"! Lu Qingjiu and Yin Xun's relationship is WAY more appealing, and they have WAY more chemistry than Lu Qingjiu and Bai Yuehu do. When Lu Qingjiu walks into Yin Xun's soul and sees what's inside? So deliciously heartbreaking! Same thing again when Yin Xun is terrified that Lu Qingjui would leave him when he finds out the truth about himself....my god, THEY have potential to be the main couple.... In comparison, Bai Yuehu is literally background furniture that lives to eat.

The side characters/animals were cute, and I also enjoyed the various ghost stories, but they weren't enough to keep me going. The pace of this novel is also GLACIAL. I like a good slice of life, but this novel's pace was so excruciatingly slow, it's the most terrifying thing about the novel.

I wanted to like this more since it has such good reviews but honestly it was low-key boring. There's basically no plot for the first 70% of the book and even when it finally does start to pick up, it's still not all that exciting. Pretty much every chapter is just the main characters prepping, cooking, and then eating food. I found myself skimming entire paragraphs.

The end was pretty cute though and the characters were likeable. Why is it so long though??

4.5 but mostly speaking to my own venn diagrams of interests. the main romance is written pretty mildly and much more of a 细水长流 type.

The writing of this was so amusing, and true to life despite being fantastical. I had a fun time with this, and it felt like revisiting fond vacation memories. Just a comfort and joyful time.

There are two main problems with this book. First of all, the plot moves at a glacial pace. The author clearly enjoys writing food descriptions more than advancing the story. Good for them, I just don't know if the book has to be this long. Another issue is that there's no chemistry between the leads. I've never been a fan of tsundere love interests. I was a lot more invested in the main character's friendships as well as the general worldbuilding.

This webnovel is the definition of slice-of-life. Literally several chapters about gathering ingredients, cooking food, and preparing for winter. Like if you're into farm-core, then this story will hit the spot. I was in the mood for something light, so this worked for me. The webnovel does have horror elements that I found a bit disturbing, and the supernatural reveals through the plot honestly made me sad, but I enjoyed the writing enough to finish it.
