Out of the ashes of the zombie apocalypse, Kate and her small band of survivors have created a life and become a family. They train together, scavenge together, and survive together.
Their comfortable routine is interrupted by a frantic distress call. When Kate forms a rescue mission, she and her people find themselves faced with the unthinkable: evolved “alpha” zombies capable of organizing hordes of the undead.
Even worse, the alphas are on the move--and they’re headed straight for the university where the survivors have made their home.
Can Kate and her people outwit the alpha zombies and save their home? Or will they become part of the undead horde?
A brilliant read I absolutely loved it. I love the characters, and that is the thing with a series you really get to know them and care about them. It's packed full of action right through the book, and it is nail-biting crazy at times. The pace is fast, and it's an exciting and intense read.
Kate, an ultrarunner, is holed up in a former college dorm with a rag tag bunch of former students and soldiers. They are getting in good physical condition, learning to gather supplies, and honing their zombie-killing skills. Things are finally looking up for the group of survivors. But, then they start to notice a change in the zombies. The zoms are forming organized packs headed by alpha zombies. When a huge horde descends on the town, the group struggles to survive. Zombies are bad enough....but huge hordes of zombies led by intelligent alphas? That's bad.....really, really bad.
Lost Coast is the 3rd book in the Undead Ultra series. In this newest story, the survivors face new challenges and some tough choices have to be made. Alpha zombies force them to up their game in order to survive. Not only that, but a long time friend of the group needs their help. When the whole world has disintegrated into constant fear and the constant possibility of death, friendships mean so much more. They have to find a way to help Alvarez.
Another great story in this series! I enjoyed the action, interesting developments for established characters, and some new characters joining the group. Can't wait for the next book!
**I received a review copy from the author in exchange for a honest review. All opinions expressed are entirely my own.**
I love Undead Ultra -- it's my favorite zombie series!
I'm re-visiting Undead Ultra in audio format. I previously read the ebooks. The audio for Lost Coast is a bit over 14 hours long. Gwendolyn Druyor narrates. Druyor does a wonderful job of voice acting! Her performance brings Picott's characters to life!
This is my favorite book in the series. Lots of action and character development. Even though I knew what was going to happen, the audio book still kept me on the edge of my seat. It quickly became a binge listen over a weekend.
Definitely enjoying re-visiting this series. It's just as good the second (or third+ time!) as it was the first.
Currently I am "Sheltering in Place" due to COVID-19 and this has been a great book to read during this time! I am not normally a reader who wants to hear about zombies but the group dynamics in this book apply to our world today...in a surreal kind of way :) Going to stores where there is not toilet paper, chicken, hand sanitizer and masks because these are items that get snatched up when the world gets a little more obviously interconnected in a time of danger..and then reading this book makes our community choices a little more real in terms of how we impact others. Good to know that characters like Kate are out there trying to be positive in the midst of chaos when those with less altruistic motives are showing us how selfishness doesn't really serve us all. It has been great to read this fast paced book and I can't wait to read the sequel.
This is another excellent adventure from Camille Picott! Brilliant! Well written, good character development & some great twists & turns in the plot! I strongly recommend this writer! Looking forward to more of the same!
The more I read of this series, the more I am convinced that if the zombie apocalypse comes, only the ultrarunners will survive. I'm not sure why I never thought of it before but as someone who gets a stitch going from the couch to the fridge, staying in shape is the number one priority. Kate makes sure all of her "kids" do just that. She doesn't let up for a second and I feel like that is the only way some of them have survived.
Kate continues to grow in this book. She is so different from the woman we met in the first book. It's almost like the zombie apocalypse was a literal reset for her. And I loved every minute of it. This installment has more of a humanising feel to it which is often lacking in zombie stories. Kate now had to contend with zombies that are evolving as well as survivors from outside her little group. It would be easy to become suspicious and wary of people but she is still able to see past the harrowing situation to the people behind all the suffering.
I loved that Kate and Alvarez were reunited in this book. He's such an interesting character and one that I am interested in seeing for future books. Love this installment. Can't wait for the next.

This book, this whole series is utterly fascinating! Who knew about Ultra Runners? Not couch potato me! Who knew they could be the awesome center characters in a totally enthralling ZA series? Camille Picott knew and wrote a totally kick a series to let the rest of us know as well! A must read because it is so darn well written and just that good!
Camille Picott is one of the best. Her apocalyptic setting for ultra marathon runs make for an exciting story that you will not want miss. Actually all of the Undead Ultra books keep you wanting more and more. Do yourself a favor and give Camille a try. I promise you will not be sorry.
A fantastic third instalment in a series that just keeps getting better. The undead ultra series makes you want to put on your runners and push yourself to the limit.
I think this book is my absolute favorite of the Undead Ultra Series. Set off the coast of Oregon/California our band of survivors set off on a journey to help Alvarez. You may recognize this name from previous Undead Ultra novels. I highly recommend that you read these in order to truly understand Lost Coast.
Alvarez first met Kate in the first book of this series, Undead Ultra. He was a lowly foot soldier left to survive on Hwy 101. Alvarez helped Kate and Frederico in one of the most trying times. However, Alvarez journeyed in the opposite direction to find Fort Ross in California.
In desperation, Alvarez reaches out to Kate to help him save the fort against Mr. Rosario, a drug lord of California. Having had her own deathly experience evading Mr. Rosario, Kate is determined to help Alvarez. However from the moment her family leaves, they are set with obstacles unlike anything they expect.
Shipwrecked in an area called Lost Coast, Kate must get her team through one of the worst Ultra experiences ever. The Lost Coast is an area of uninhabitable land filled with deathly obstacles, high tides, cold, rain and grizzly bears. They are 50 miles from civilization.
Picott really creates a heart thumping novel with this one. She brought me back to why I fell in love with this series to begin with. Kate is always on the go and survivor. I enjoy watching her command her team while also facing inner emotional turmoil. Although this go round she doesn't go it alone. We finally get to know Ben, Caleb and Ash the original soldiers sent to Humboldt in book one to clear the campus of zombies. These three have a huge untrustworthy history that comes to light and unifies this group.
I can't say enough wonderful things about Picott's series. Honestly, I was a little skeptic at first of an ultra marathon running single mama saving the apocalypse, but Picott really tells a great story. All the great parts of a zombie novel are included- face paced, heart thumping, survivalist knowledge, and on the go thinking.
Kate’s little family has gone through tough times with zombies and human survivors. But they have managed to keep going despite the odds. But things are changing. It seems that the zombies are evolving. Herds of zombies are being driven by alphas, those that seem to have become smart enough to lead. If that was not bad enough, they are heading right for the university.
I love how this series keeps evolving. Kate has changed from the sad woman that was afraid to be alone to the leader of her little family. The whole group has changed, not always for the best but to help them survive. It makes sense that the zombies would change too. I loved how they started to become smarter, such a change from the continuous ravenous corpses or just falling apart.
This is an amazing zombie series and one that I strongly recommend checking out but make sure you read them in order. You can get the book on both Kindle and Audible. Gwendolyn Druyor does a fantastic job drawing you into the story and keeping you there for the whole ride.
I love this series and can’t wait to get into the next book, Fort Dead.
This was really well written, the plot was nice and as always has a very unique angle with the marathon running being the saving grace that keeps everyone alive. I really found myself enjoying Ben. I think his background and the trauma he has suffered have prepared him in a way to be really strong in the Zombie Apocalypse and be able to relate and dare I say talk to Kate to get her out of her head. (Even if the running joke is that he's terrible with words) To be honest with her about the ptsd.
There was a lot of action but also a lot of character growth and self reflection.
Although, I have to say this writer gets everytime. I swear they left the cat to die in the bathroom in the first nook, then my absolute favorite animal (no spoilers) at the end of this book. Sheesh I bet they are having turtle soup in the fourth one I'm about to binge read too. Kudos you wrote a fantastic read that had substance to go with the action!
I love this series to date, the author really goes into detail but not overly so that you find yourself skipping over passages. This is the third one in the series and they really give you a run for your money ;) pun intended.
Kate has changed a lot in each book, you get to see/read/hear how each thing affects her.
The book follow Kate again as well as a soldier name Ban. I will say that while it was interesting hearing things from Ben, I am more into Kate's chapters xD.
Ben really likes Kate which he speaks about in his inner monologues but he is really crud at expressing anything to her. Along with Kate and her training with the others, Ben helps everyone learn how to shoot guns.
There are some very shocking scenes you wouldn't see coming but still can bring your emotions to the extremes.
I am really enjoying this series one of my favorite zombie series that I’ve discovered in a long while. I really, really like Kate, I love the fact that she’s smart and thoughtful and that she doesn’t do stupid stupid impulsive stuff. I love that this post apocalyptic zombie series doesn’t kill off all of the good guys, yes, there are death and losses, but at least they’re not thrown at you in every single chapter . And damn if the author hasn’t made me really really want to visit the Pacific Northwest, Northern California in those magnificent forest in particular.
Wow I could not put this book down. This series is such a fun and exciting twist on the normal zombie book. When Kate gets a call from her friend Alverez she knows she has to step it up and run to help. With a small group can they make it across the coast in time to save Alverez and his group? Will everyone survive this extremely dangerous rescue mission? Will Alverez and his crew still be at the fort alive if they make it there?
Lost Coast is my favorite of the Undead Ultra series, the action intensifies, we are given a deeper understanding of some of the characters who were strangers from Dorm Life. I have to admit the story and Gwyndolyn Druyor’s excellent narration caused me to get teary eyed in a couple of places while listening. If you are an Undead Ultra fan, this episode one is a must read/listen.
HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend this series. I read a lot of zombie apocalypse type books and this author actually came up with an original idea. The zombies do not act like most zombies in most series. The writing is great, you fall in love with the characters. I am hoping this is not the last of the series.
I loved how the characters and the story have developed. Kate's desire to help everyone has the group on road trips, leading to lots of action. We also get a deeper, more emotional, look at the characters that really adds to the story. The narrator was excellent bringing multiple characters to live.
This author is one of the most adept I’ve ever read at character development. The depth of these characters is amazing . She doesn’t “tell” she shows and writes their personalities. I am heavily invested in all of the characters, not just the protagonist. She is truly masterful!
Picott keeps the zombie apocalypse fresh and interesting with outdoor survival challenges, giant redwoods and alpha zombies. Each boom has a fresh challenge to keep you interested.
Just finished the 3rd book in the series (plus freebie Foot soldier) and going to get 4th and final instalment. Loving the story and such a bonus to have no editing errors etc. Recommend this great take on the zombie apocalypse theme.
Excellent zombie apocalypse story in the continuing series by Camille Picott. I listened to each story one after the other immediately after finishing the previous entry in the series. I highly recommend this book and the entire series to anyone that enjoys zombie and/or apocalypse survival.
This series just gets better and better. I have read loads of zombie and apocalyptic books and this is definitely up there with the best of them .If you haven't read it you should definitely put it on your list .
This episode of the story is very exciting. In this book the group goes up against pirates, the sea, and their first ultramarathon. It's a wild ride. I'm really looking forward to the next book.
I could do without the swoony nature of the romance in this one. Especially because it comes with a jarring shift away from the 1st person POV of the rest of the series. But the eventual return to actual running is very nice!
Another ultra good installment in the Undead Ultra series. I really enjoy reading this series and find them difficult to put down. Lost Coast reminded me a lot more of the first in the series and I opted for 5 stars instead of 4 this time around. I'm looking forward to book 4.
The series slowed down in this one, but I still loved it! If there aver will be more of the books in this specific Universe, I will most definitely check them out!
