Desert Sanctuary #2

An Indoctrinated Man

Rate this book
Wolf shifter Erik Masters has had a lot of sleepless nights since he visited the illegal compound in New Mexico which housed scores of newly made wolves. The atrocities he witnessed on site have been weighing heavily on his mind. When he learns that another convoy of these shifters will shortly be arriving in the sanctuary, his anger and sense of hopelessness increase. Worse still is the news of a recent discovery―some of the shifters have come from a different compound, but its location is as yet unknown. When special ops leader, Jace Bryson commands Erik to befriend one of the new shifters so that they may discover the new compound’s whereabouts, Erik’s reaction is one of disbelief. Horrific events in his past have left him bitter and jaded—he doesn’t trust strangers and is far more at ease in his own company. When he discovers that Clark, the shifter he’s been assigned to is his mate, Erik’s problems have only just begun. Clark Perry is far from an average shifter, made or otherwise. It appears his trust issues are more deeply rooted than Erik’s and Clark might just have an agenda of his own. ***Please note*** This book has been previously published, the cover has been changed and the story re-edited, but otherwise the content remains the same.

Lavinia Lewis

Lavinia discovered reading at an early age and could always be found with her nose in a book. She loved getting lost in a fantasy world even then. When her parents bought her a typewriter for Christmas at aged eleven, her fate was sealed. She spent hours dreaming up characters and creating stories. Not a lot has changed.

Lavinia is a Welsh Valley girl who has lived all over the UK. Today she lives at home in the small village in which she grew up, just outside of Cardiff, Wales, but ask her again tomorrow and it could very well be somewhere different. She has travelled extensively to places as far and wide as Africa, Asia, Australia, North and Central America and most of Europe. Although some of her books are set in Texas she has never stepped foot in the state but plans to spend time there in the near future. She is a proud Brit, but feels quite at home when visiting the grand ol’ USofA.

Although Lavinia is a huge fan of the romance genre, particularly M/M she will admit to reading anything and everything. She loves horror, a good thriller and if a book has the capacity to make her cry, well, all the better. She loves a gritty, angst-ridden, gut-wrenching story, but is more than happy to settle in with a lighter, fluffier tale. She loves a happy ending and the characters in her books have thus far been lucky enough to find one. She can’t guarantee that will always be the case. She has two cats and wouldn’t part with them for the world, even though they make her sneeze.

Lavinia also writes M/F romance under the pseudonym Amy Armstrong.

The whole sting operation rubbed me the wrong way. There was no reason to suspect Clark to be an enemy and the clean up from this particular mission just seemed too..... easy.

The angst between mates was short lived. Perhaps drag out it out more between them instead of resolve this and move on to dealing with compounds.. And the ending was too easy and everything tied up in a neat little bow. As if the series ended with just two books you probably wouldn't miss any layovers from the end of this book as there IS none. Not to sound like it's a total wash but reading my review of book 1 and seeing my rating, compared to this one it's simply not quite on the same par.

Intense. How do you find peace with extreme PTSD? Lots of pain. Clark is a made shifter, powerful and misguidedly resentful. Erik is comitted, dedicatedd and intense. Evil was experimenting on unaware subjects subjecting them to extreme torture. Some were liberated by Jace's group, many were damaged, some beyond repair. Jace has a santuary for shifters that create a family and a place of security, for the walking wounded. This is an intense, absolutely interesting story of compassion, loyalty, self assessment, and realignment. Jace tasks, Eric an emotionally broken, anti-social man to befriend new arrival, Clark who has a hidden agenda. Clark is attracted, he figures he found a stress reliever. Eric recognizes Clark as his mate. Will Clark succeed in his secret mission? Will Eric find peace and earn Clark's loyalty. Can Jace's Spec Ops find more in need of sanctuary? Great if dark characters. Nice plot. It's a hard read because of the storyline. Sadly, it's war! I received an ARC from Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

I absolutely enjoyed this MM shifter romance although it is slightly darker than what this author normal writes. I still found it quite fascinating to read. The well-paced & intriguing plot holds the reader’s attention until the end. The characters are well-developed & interesting with strong-willed personalities.
There is: a ops leader (Jace) orders a rather anti-social man (Eric) with some horrific memories to make friends with a new arrival (Clark) who unknown to them has devious plans & to Eric’s dismay he discovers that Clark is his mate, a sanctuary, various compounds, wolf shifters, lion shifters, coyote shifters, made wolf shifters, black op missions, criminal conspiracies, drama, twists& turns, intrigue, suspense, action, mystery, secrets, trust issue, mates, threats, violence, enemies, attacks, conflict, discovery deceit, disbelief, confrontations, disagreements, betrayal, heartache, apologies, contentment, some steam & a satisfying conclusion.

A deceptive operation that convinced loyal warriors that they were working on a secret shifter project and aiding their government actually left many deformed and experimented on as test subjects. Like Mengele, the scientists did not view them as truly human and went through e tremendous methods to get desired results or test subject responses.

Clark had been a loyal soldier like that. When one of the camps was liberated, a collection of indoctrinated warriors was planted in the shifter sanctuary.

Intense action and romance with horrific twists

The shifters' world has become more dangerous than they thought.

Desert Sanctuary book 2.

Made shifter Clark is brought to the sanctuary and Erik immediately recognizes him as his mate. There is deception afoot and the entire sanctuary will need to learn more how the world has been changing.

I liked the way I got caught up in Erik's and Clark's emotional conflicts and turmoil. And how their resolution was so satisfying.

Another wonderful fast read from Lavinia!

I enjoyed this unique shifter story and loved that Erik found his mate, Clark, a made coyote. It was difficult to read about Erik's very dark past but the storyline was very compelling. Once Clark understood and realized the truth about his life working for the government (or not), their romance had strengthened. I was pulled into the plot from beginning to end. This was a very enthralling read. =)

I thought that this book was ok, but nothing particular really stood out to me, either good or bad. I would have liked to have had more insight into Clark and his background brow the point where this book started. Also, if this truly is the end of the shifter program, it was a bit anticlimactic, and too simply done to be truly satisfying.

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.

Erik is a wolf shifter and lives on a compound that helps shifters and humans that were turned into shifters. Clark is brought in with the last batch of humans turned into shifters. Erik sees Clark and knows he's his mate. There's more to Clark than meets the eye and it can destroy whats between him and Erik. I really enjoyed this book.

blah,

Insta love, no switching, very rushed character development, if you could even call it that. 0 to 100 relationship. No grammatical issues that I noticed.

In Lavinia Lewis’s second installment of the Desert Sanctuaryseries we meet Eric and Clark. This story can be read as a stand alone. Eric has seen evil and is struggling to put what he has seen behind him. His tendency to be a loner doesn’t give him much of a support system to process what he has seen. So I could totally understand his attitude when ask to befriend Clark. Clark is just as anti-social but for totally different reasons. He is a company man and determined to do the job he has been sent to do. Little does he know that he is An Indoctrinated Man. But when he learns that he has been fed a line of bull, he must decide who to trust and believe. I loved that Ms. Lewis didn’t make the decision an easy one. She gave us two characters with rock solid honor which required reflection before change was made. It didn’t help that they were reluctant mates. But Ms. Lewis did a wonderful job of allowing us to understand and empathize with both Clark and Eric. They may have started on opposite sides but she gave both men a way to meet which allowed them both to remain the honorable males they are. I am a fan of Ms. Lewis and am looking forward to seeing what will happen next at the Desert Sanctuary.

This was really hard to get through and harder to finish. Events moved far to quickly for even a paranormal story. Yes shifters recognize their mates instantly, I get that but the rest of it is far more complicated. I can only suspend belief so far.

Clark is supposedly career military, black ops, working on orders he thinks come from the highest authority. So, immediately he gives it up and decides not to follow orders when mated but won't come clean due to clearance. Then he is tricked into seeing a file and believes what he sees, no question of trickery or doctored fake documents. His reactions throughout the book don't ring true for someone of his training. I suggest the author actually meet some military personnel if she is going to continue trying to write them as characters.

I won't be continuing this series, if it continues. Everything was tied up at the end here, everyone accounted for and detained so I'm not sure there are more books coming.

I might, might read any new books for 'Shifters Haven' if any come out. While those also have issues they are at least entertaining for the short novellas they are.

I like this darker take on shifters and how they're just as scared of the unknown as humans and don't realize it. I like it much, much better than the usual shifter stories. Good action and danger, too.
