“‘Once the dice are cast,’ said Jeffries, ‘the result cannot be reversed.’ He looked at each of us in turn. “That goes not just for Megs but us all.”

This is the story of Margaret Tanner, the abused daughter of the owner of a tavern, whose chance encounter with the “Tobyman” Charles Jeffries allows her not only freedom from the tavern and its denisons, but the opportunity to free others from their belongings as Megs, part of the “gang” that Jefferies heads up. Through the Black Plague, the London Fire and the religious fights over England, Megs has more freedom as a man rather than a woman. But what happens when Margaret falls for another highwayman?

Amy Wolf’s new trilogy takes us into the history of the mess of London’s political upheaval and is a well researched tale. I thoroughly enjoyed getting swept up in the adventures Megs has. I believe Wolf has a winner here. Will look forward to the next in the trilogy. Recommended 4/5

I loved this book, the adventure, danger and entertaining in one book. The characters were likeable, and some not so likeable. Life on the road was not comfortable. There was always fear of being caught and ending up in the noose. The characters were well done and felt like friends.
This was the first book by this author that I read, but I will certainly read more.
I received a early copy of this book with no expectation of a review. This review are only my thoughts about this book.

Ever wonder what it would be like to be the opposite sex? Margaret "Megs" Tanner learns first hand as she joins a band of highwaymen and her life of adventure begins! I definitely recommend this if you enjoy Robin Hood, The Three Musketeers, sword fights and adventure!

I enjoyed this book about a young woman who disguises herself as a boy to become a highwayman. I loved the political intrigue and the highwaymen holding up none other than John Milton!
What I objected to was the use of Ms, a modern term for unmarried women.

"You must be bold. You must be quick. But most of all, be merry!” - Captain Jefferies

Megs had a dream; a dream of vengeance. For eighteen years abuse and poverty had ruled, and after escaping a forced marriage to a man she loathed, it was MEGS' turn to call the shots and be the victor. To ensure this Megs took up the role of a "gentleman highwayman", a "knight of the road", to become the scourge of Hounslow Heath!

While learning the trade from Captain Jeffries, Megs soon finds herself "unmasked" to one of her companions, due to unlucky rolls of the dice. Thankfully, it's Aventis that discovers her secret. Warned to keep it from her other companions, Megs is quick to agree.

"I felt my spirits plunge, but not from jealousy. Rather, it was seeing this woman, so soft in hair and dress, able to be openly what I could not. I looked down at my doublet and breeches. Had I become so hard—so mannish in spirit and dress—that I was no longer a woman? Was I now a sort of creature who strode between the two sexes?" - Megs

Despite taking to the lifestyle of a highwayman, Megs yearns to be what she is; a young woman; feminine, soft; not someone masquerading as a man! But as a woman, her choices are limited: marriage or prostitution, abuse and misuse... Can Megs find a middle ground, or is she destined to swing from a gibbet as a "caution?"

Mega wants what every young woman wants; someone to call her own, someone she can lean on when needed, and SUPPORT when he needs it. But her life as a highwayman restricts Megs in so many ways... Could Aventis be the answer to her secret prayers, or...?

Haunting... Set in the distant past, a young woman struggles with the mores and expectations of society in the 1600's; plagues, bandits, kings, queens; riches and poverty. Life in general was brutal, short and often bloody; the life of a highwayman was a hard one, but preferable to prostitution or a forced marriage.

Fairly decent book. This book was a little outside my comfort genre zone, so I didn’t leave a 5 star. However, for people who enjoy Three Musketeers and Robin Hood, this book is definitely for you.
Received this and an ARC and leaving an honest review.

As always an entertaining read. A woman goes under cover as a man and experiences many adventures as she tries to keep her true identity under wraps. Danger, adventure and humor all together in this delightful tale. A must have for your bookshelf!

I received an ARC and the opinions and views are my own. A Woman or the Road was an interesting story which covered quite a bit of history in England. The life of a highwaymen was not easy but even harder for a woman. Meg’s is learning the life of a highwayman. Captain Jeffries takes her under his wing and teaches her how to disguise herself as a boy and rob the rich. Even though they are thieves they also have honour. The story goes through plague, the great fire of London and the attempted murder of a king. I would recommend this book to all.

Fun read about a female highwayman in the 17th century. It is about a high spirited woman who does not want to lead a typical existence. The world of highwayman is not as glamorous as what we were led to believe.

This book is practically made for fans of The Musketeers. It has a group of comrades from that time period traveling around the English and French countryside, with plenty of battles and adventure and even a plot against the crown. It even has a strong female lead and a dash of romance. Why the three stars? In the first half of the book the female lead really didn’t read as female except the couple of times when her sex came into question (she did read more as female in the second half of the book). This book is incredibly well-researched, down to the smallest of details with plenty of history, and all of the dialogue feels authentic to the time period. But for me, all that detail and awkward encumbered dialogue with scads of antiquated terms and unpronounceable proper names, made the book incredibly difficult to parse and figure out just what was happening (and because of that, I wasn’t getting a good feel of the heroine or really any of her traveling companions except for the bigot Carnatus). The first half of the book just felt like a month in her life as a highway man, doing coach robberies, spending time in inns, and the occasional training, and pretty much nothing else. The second half of the book did pick up the pace as it covered several famous events in history (the plague and the Great Fire of London) (loved the spotlighting famous events!), but I’ve never been a fan of politics in books, so I wasn’t really following the plot against the crown.

This is a new author for me. And, luckily, this is just the first book of a trilogy. The main character is Margaret Tanner, an 18 yr old woman that doesn't enjoy her life, working in a tavern for a real lout. She decides that she wants more out of life than what she can do as a woman, so she decides to reinvent herself as a male highwayman. And she knows just the person to help her, Captain Jeffries, a very notorious highwayman.

Captain Jeffries agrees to let her join his crew as Megs. Now comes the fun part. Hiding the fact that she's female while learning all the new skills she will need to be successful, such as riding a horse, handling a gun and other weapons. And it's fun following her adventurous new life. Can't wait to read the rest of the series.

I received an ARC ebook from the author to read and give an honest review.

I had a good time reading this book. I enjoyed the characters and the action. Many women have taken men's roles over the centuries, some as pirates or just sailors, some as soldiers, and in many instances, who could blame them. Besides an entertaining story, Wolf does a good job of showing the hardships and injustices women have thru the centuries. Megs is a strong women who endures much to survive, but at the same time, she never loses her empathy for us. A good read.

For fans of fast-moving swashbucklers like The Three Musketeers, this book includes authentic period detail, an unusual female hero, and tons of scrapes and near-misses involving both sword and pistol. Our hero, Margaret ("Megs") Tanner, is an innkeeper's daughter forced to become a notorious highwaywoman in 17th-century England. I tried to capture the flavor of Dumas while putting my own spin on events.

I love this book! Such a great story of adventure, friendship and maybe a little love. The story was really well written and I was very sad to see it end and I just want more. It was a different style of book from what I usually read but you better believe I am going to start reading Amy Wolf's other books.

Stand and deliver

Megs ran from her father to become a highwaywoman albeit, dressed as a man.

She takes on a journey through the Plague, the Great fire of London, and a plot to bring down King Charles II.

Good friends, good times, and bad. A very good story with people you come to know little by little.

I’m partial to books with strong FMC. A Woman of the Road definitely fits that bill. It was very well written and I loved that there was some length and I didn’t fly through it in two hours like most books. Honestly can’t wait till book 2
