Spooky Magic

Rate this book

Being the only witch at my school is the best thing ever! So when the new girl turns out to be a witch too, someone awful and horrid from my old life, you know there's going to be trouble.

My name is Evie Everyday, and I go to Wyndemere Elementary, a strictly no-witch zone. It's hard enough keeping my witchiness a secret without Veronica showing up to ruin my wonderful new life. Worst of all, she’s better than me at everything too.

That is, until the spooky Halloween Competition. I finally have the chance to prove, once and for all, that I’m better than Veronica.

Winning should be easy. All I have to do is:

Stop myself from turning green with envy. Come up with the spookiest magic ever. Not listen to my friends. And beat Veronica.

But when everything starts to go wrong, the only way to win the competition is to make it spookier than ever. And only one person can help me... the one and only Jack-o-lantern.

Evie Everyday Witch is a series of chapter books that kids and parents will love. Ideal for reluctant readers. Evie's quirky, funny personality will sweep kids off their feet, and get them reading again!

This book is a middle grade book, and this is the second book in the Evie Everyday Witch series. That is about a Witch Evie Everyday that goes to a normal school. It is the second book in the Evie Everyday Witch Series. This book is about Evie and the new witch at her school, Veronica both enters the spooky Halloween Competition at their school. The competition turns out to have more weight for Evie to win then the other kids. But, she learns that just because the competition has more riding on it she cannot let it go to her head. I love the messages in these books. I also love the pictures in the book. I think these books are perfect for kids 7 years old to about 13. I ordered the first book from my daughter, and I will be getting her this one when she finishes reading the first one. I was kindly provided an e-copy of this book by the publisher or author via booksirens in exchange for an honest review.

Though this story is about a magic witch going to a school for Lamrons (Normals), this book and this series are more about navigating friendships, learning who you are, and learning to listen to others. I really enjoyed the first book where Evie, the witch who never fit into magic society, finally finds her place in a school for non-witches.

In this book, she's loving her new life when her old nemesis, a girl who often bullied her, shows up at her new school and takes every opportunity to show her up. What makes it harder for Evie is that Veronica is better than her at everything, and easily draws people into her orbit, making Evie worried that she's going to lose her friends and place in that school.

I honestly wasn't a fan of what the adults did (her dad and Veronica's dad) to increase the friction between them, but beyond that, I loved how those who cared about her kept telling her that she might be a bit misguided. They were lessons that she had to learn and while the resolution was a bit sudden, it fits the age group this series is intended for. I also loved the illustrations, which made me smile. Her magical pets are particularly wonderful, and I love how her home is always open to more! As much as I wasn't a fan of what her dad and Veronica's dad did, I do love how supportive of her both of her parents are. They still let her make her own decisions, but they are there to show her that they love and support her.

The author does a great job of spelling out all the big emotions children have, both positive and negative, which I think children will appreciate. Even though Evie makes all sorts of mistakes/poor choices, she is still a "good person" which I think can help children work through their own "big" feelings. The author has a background in child psychology and I think it shows in her writing.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book from Booksirens. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I love reading children's books, Middle grade and YA. They are so much fun to read. This is book 2 of Evie Everyday Little Witch series. This book is a really fun read. I did not realize at first that the stories actually have morals for children to learn. Those kinds of books are actually fun to read. To me moral books are the most important books because they are actually teaching books.

I got a free copy of the book and is voluntarily leaving a review.

description

DISCLAIMER: I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

TRIGGER: This is a sweet graphic children book. The story is beautifully told in wonderful illustration.

Evie Everyday's adventure continues...yay!

No...no...she does not want to become normal like any of her friends anymore. She comes with a mission to beat the young Ms. Veronica at the Halloween Competition on Friday, October 31.

Will it be easy? nope, it won't particularly when mummy tells her the witches' law:

"Yes, two laws. One that will ban witches from living outside witch communities. And one that will let witches have the freedom to live anywhere they want to. One of the will become the new law."

So, what to do? Will it be easy? will Evie win the competition with all the burdens those witches put on her shoulder?

Evie comes out with an idea of doing a magic trick with Jack O' Lantern. After a few trial and errors. Evie and Jack are succeed to entertain those people who watch them in the competition.

The end of the story is a little bit unpredictable. I love the twist that Elena Paige brings in the second book of Evie, The Everyday Witch series. The character of Evie is so lovable and as a reader, I am very much engaged with her. Elena Paige’s little surprises also give a little bit of kicking in the end of story. The moral of the story is clear: believe in yourself!

"I believe in you, Evie Everyday. You're not a loser. You're the most creative and clever witch I know. You'll come out with something magnificent."

It is definitely a book worth reading!

Its a middle grade novel about a young witch, Evie who tries to adjust in a normal school with normal students (muggles). Evie has magical pets who she takes to this school cuz they are allowed. The magical pets constitute a magical purple cat, Nip, he can talk, a bat Sylvia, a corn, Pop. Evie's bff Izzy is a normal human but she is interested and intrigued by witches.

This book is second in the series, this particular book's plot revolves around another witch, Veronica showing up to Evie's school who happens to have had shared a mean past with Evie. Veronica is better at magic, charming, and better at everything she does, even the cat Nip has a crush on her and Izzy is also drawn towards her friendship. Evie here faces a fear of not only loosing her special status in school, but also her bff and is determined to straighten some things.

They have this Halloween competition coming up and Veronica challenges Evie, this provides a ground for the girls to battle for who is better and who gets to stay. If Evie looses she has to return to her previous school that she hated.

The book isn't all about magic per se but about friendships and competition.

The interesting aspect was that this book brought to limelight some ugly feelings and emotions which every teenager/adult goes through, jealousy, envy, low self esteem, etc but this book also channels a way to look beyond them and realize that they are wrong sometimes, their actions, their feelings might be wrong, it might be hard to accept, but it is what it is.
I received an arc (advanced copy) of this book via Book Sirens in exchange for an honest review.

Recommended groups- 7+ , middle grade, even adults can enjoy it.

Another win for Evie Everyday Witch!

All is going good with Evie-school, friends-until new girl Veronica shows up. But Veronica isn’t new to Evie. They know each other from the past and Veronica is also a witch! Evie is concerned that Veronica will ruin all the hard work that Evie has done to fit in with her classmates. They’ve never gotten along, and a Halloween contest is announced putting the two witches against other.

Unfortunately, there’s much more at stake here then Evie knows. In this cute, whimsical story we find ourselves watching children overcome their issues to make the world better for everyone.

I’m really enjoying this series by Elena Paige. My 9 year old grandson enjoys these also even though he says they’re “just about Girl Witches”!

Thank you to BookSirens for a copy of this e-book to read and review voluntarily.

Moving away from Pergoria, her old school for witches, to Wyndemere Elementary, a “normal” school full of “normal” kids, is the best thing that has ever happened to Evie the Everyday Witch. In fact, the reason she likes Wyndemere so much is because she is the only witch there. Spooky Magic, the second book in the Evie the Everyday Witch series by Elena Paige starts as Evie has finally fit in at Wyndemere and has made a new best friend, Izzy.

She wishes her life would stay like this forever! But one day, Evie finds out that a new student is coming to Wyndemere. And what’s worse, this new student isn’t a “normal” student - she’s a witch! When Evie gets to school the next day, she learns that the new witch is Veronica, her old enemy from Pergoria. But the greatest blow comes when Izzy asks Evie if she can sit with Veronica instead of Evie in class.

Evie is convinced that not only has Victoria replaced her as the only witch in Wyndemere but also as Izzy’s best friend. That day, Veronica proposes that the class should have a Halloween magic competition. Their teacher, Mr. Sanders, says that whoever wins won’t receive any homework for the rest of the term. But when Evie gets home, she learns that the stakes are much higher than being exempt from homework. In fact, the whole world of witches is relying on her to win this competition. Will she be able to prove herself to Veronica once and for all? Will she be able to save the rights of all the witches? And last but not least, will she be able to save her friendship with Izzy?

Opinion:
Spooky Magic, the second book in the Evie the Everyday Witch series by Elena Paige, is an action-filled book. Its complex antagonist vs. protagonist relationships made it really suspenseful and hard to put down. As the reader, I was quickly wrapped up in Evie’s story, which took me on a constant rollercoaster of emotions. Spooky Magic has an easy-to-follow storyline and, in my opinion, the perfect number of characters. I would recommend reading Book 1 of the series before this book to get better acquainted with Evie’s backstory. Besides being an entertaining read, this book teaches readers a number of important life lessons: the values of friendship, forgiveness, and perseverance. It also teaches young readers not to let difficult emotions get the best of them and that being yourself is always the best way to be. I would recommend this book to magic lovers ages 8-13.

Have you ever had your enemy take your bestie away from you? Well, that’s what happens to Evie. Her enemy enters her school and is challenging her for her spot in the school and the town. Evie is a witch, and she has to win the magic competition to stay at her human school. She comes up with an evil, nasty, creepy, and gross magic trick. (To her advantage, she can use real magic and not a lame card trick.) Little does she know, the kids do not want to be scared; they want a nice performance (scare-free). After screams, cries, and giggles, the competition ends. Does she lose her friend, town, and school? Read the book to find out.

Spooky Magic is an amazingly written book full of drama, friendship, and some hardship. Evie is very easy to relate to. She feels that she needs to be perfect and do her best to not let people down. I love the friendship between Evie and her best friends and how they go through many different hard times and good times together. I love how her other friends each have something different they can offer to help Evie along the way. I recommend this book to ages nine and up, only because of the level. There is nothing inappropriate or bad in this book.

I give this book 3.5 stars, but as that's not an option, I'd prefer to give it 4 stars rather than 3. I didn't enjoy it as much as the first book.

Spooky Magic is the second book in a series for young readers. It is quick, fun and quirky. I especially liked the beginning and the end, but the middle felt chaotic to me. I found that when I put the book down, I procrastinated about picking it up again. But I eventually did and finished it today.

While the storyline was chaotic, I appreciated the lessons the book presented to the reader -- friendship, jealousy, selfishness. I guess the author attempted to show that when we are focused on what's happening to us, with no thought of others, then we can say and do wrong things. We can try and justify our actions, but it doesn't change the fact that we were selfish. Anyway, I liked the way the author resolved the issues the main character was having. It made the book worth reading.

Young readers will enjoy the colourful main character and her offsiders, and the situations they find themselves in.

Continuing the adventures of the young witch, Evie Everyday’s life in a normal school.
This time her previous school enemy Veronica arrives at Wyndemere School and immediately becomes popular with the other kids. What aggravates Evie most, is that her best friend Izzy seems to have fallen under veronica’s spell too. Along with her friends Pop, a corncob, Sylvie, a bat and Nip her magical purple cat, she sets out to reveal what Veronica really is.
There is a Halloween competition at school to find the best magician so Evie is determined to win, even if it means conjuring up a banned spell. She also discovers that her time at Wyndemere may be coming to an end if she doesn’t win this Halloween show. Can she do it?
This second book in the series was charming, with great characters and the story is very entertaining. Evies magical pets are wonderful and Jack O’Lantern was unexpected.
Good story of friendship, forgiveness and forming new friendships.

After surviving an attack by a harpy and making a new best friend, life seems to be going well for Evie. However, when Veronica, her nemesis from her old school, joins Wyndemere Elementary, things suddenly change. Faced with a competition that will affect all witches, will Evie be able to keep her cool and win or will she let the green monster of jealousy get the best of her?

Spooky Magic is the second book in the Evie Everyday Witch series. Just like in Secret Magic, this book follows the adventures of Evie, who is a witch that goes to a "normal" school. I love how relatable the situations Evie is put in are. It is easy to understand what lessons are being taught without them being preachy. Evie does still annoy me with how aloof she can be about things, but overall I am still enjoying the series. The illustrations, as usual, are a super cute addition to the book.

When Evie sets her mind on something, she can be really stubborn! Will she learn to listen to her friends and work with them before it is too late? Cute story with a positive message that avoids being moralistic. Full of adorable illustrations that bring the story to life.

Kids vote: two thumbs up, will read again :) Also, we want more Jack!

Fast paced, quirky story written with kids' attention spans in mind. With some laugh out loud moments and over the top fantasy elements, this book is a lot of fun! A Halloween book that is more humorous than scary. I liked that the parents played a more active role in this book than the previous one and the fabulaous way the author captures kid's idiosyncrasies.

This is book 2 in the series but can be read as a standalone. It contains a full story arc and references to the the previous book are explained.

This is the second in the series of magical tales
With Evie Everyday, who quite often fails.
She's a witch who goes to a normal school
Where witches aren't known so it is really cool.

However, when another witch joins her class
Evie isn't sure just what'll come to pass.
She's jealous, not friendly and won't listen to her friend
She needs to be careful or good times could end!

This is a chapter story book
For children aged around 8+ to take a look.
There's magic, a competition and hallowe'en fun
And a moral to it all when everything is done.

With illustrations and adventures, too,
This will appeal to many children who
May well relate to the experiences shared
And shows being friendly is better than being scared!

For my complementary copy of this book, I say thank you,
What a magical children's read - and this is my honest review.

(Got this for an honest review)

I finally finished the second book in the series and like the first one, it was once again a middle grade magical read. It was a quick read but that's obvious because it's geared towards kids between 7 and 10ish years old so it's very easy to read. This time Evie has to compete in a competition in school which first she thought was just for simple competition between her and her enemy but it ended up having a lot more at stake than originally thought.

Again, like is said in my review for the first book, if you're looking for something fun to read for your children, grandchildren or any children for that matter, Elena Paige is the place to go. Her books are fun and magical and fantastical and I would definitely recommend them for any child :)

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

As with the first, I'm not really sure if these are hitting the age range they're designed for. I wanted to root for Evie, but nothing felt really... Resolved, not in a satisfying way at least. There were a couple of half-hearted apologies thrown around but the ultimate "lesson" was hollow and the motivations felt uncomfortably selfish to the point where I genuinely wasn't sure what to think. I think I'm used to a more whole story with books for this age range, and can't see an 8 year old enjoying it when there are books that have more worldbuilding out there. Ultimately they're fine, but I think I'm just craving more from this series.

Cute kids Halloween story. Evie was a precocious, fun loving young witch. But she doesn’t always have control of her magic. She is only eleven years old after all. She loves her new school; a non-magical school. Her family moved out of the witch community and she now goes to a school for regular kids. Only one person at the school knows she’s a witch. Her best friend Izzy. But then her nemesis from her old school enrolls in her new school with a hidden agenda, that will have dire consequences for Evie and her parents if she can’t win a competition. I really enjoyed the first one in the series. I thought it was refreshing and really clever. The second one did not live up to expectations. It felt very rushed and very jumbled in the beginning. A lot of it didn't make sense to me without reading it couple of times to understand what was going on.

Overall I did enjoy the story but I think it could have been slowed down a little and explained better. The intoduction of new characters was good, it shook things up a little. It showed different sides to characters which I really liked.

**Book from BookSirens in exchange for an honest review.**

4.5*

Quite like the first book, this was an enjoyable quick and easy read. The little drawings/images through the book are a very nice touch and help the. reader to see the character(s) and scene(s) better. I like that this book tells a story but there's also a lesson being learned. It's a very nice touch.

This book was a nice change from all the other books I am reading and I would recommend it to anyone that would like a palate cleanser, a fast and fun read and enjoyable from beginning to end.

Wasn’t wholly keen on the instant resolve with Veronica, could have been easily drawn out a bit more as no kids their age resolve problems this quickly.

Has great lessons about misguided opinions and teaches the age group this is aimed at, some amazing lessons across the series as a whole.

Nip is my favourite of her magical pets, he looks adorable in each illustration.

Evie loves being the sole witch among a slew of normals. A sudden change to that makes her literally turn green- like the wicked witch of the west.

When a former foe becomes a new and unwelcome thorn in her side, what will Evie do?

Sometimes disappointments and new challenges make old foes something different

A fun and fantastic story.

I really enjoyed this read, even more than the first In the series. The characters were well-established, the story moved quickly and the theme of friendship being more important than competition is an important message for this target audience. Once again, the illustrations really complimented the story and added an extra layer of humour to this wonderfully magical read. Looking forward to the third in the series.

Book 2 in the series. Evie is enjoying her life and school. A fellow witch transfers into school and causes trouble for Evie all over again.

An enjoyable read on how Evie handles challenges. Her “pets” are cute. This is a book that all ages can enjoy.
