The snacks are back in this latest nutty adventure from the bestselling creator of Peanut Butter & Cupcake!
It's cleaning day in the snack cabinet, and Cheese Doodle, Pretzel, and Sprinkles are hard at work. When the food friends learn that someone has moved in next door, though, they make like bananas and split to go meet their new neighbor. But when their knock not only goes unanswered, but also opens the door to Dr. Nuttenstein's house with a creeeeak, what they find inside leaves them as shaken as if they'd been placed in a blender...
In this latest spookily funny book by Terry Border, three snacks learn that they have to follow the rules--and that's the way the cookie crumbles.
What a fun little book about a group of snacks that travel across the kitchen to welcome the new Dr. Nuttenstein. But when they arrived at his house, they hide and discover what he's actually up to -- he's making a cookie monster! It's not long before the hiding snacks are found and I just hope they all make it out of there alive! The illustrations are particularly fun to look at. The art was done by manipulating and photographing three-dimensional objects.

The dark twist at the end redeemed it for me, but not sure what intended audience will think. Some will laugh. Others will be disturbed and mad that I read it to them. Most- it will go over their head unless I explain it. Adults will like this one better than some kids ages 4-7. Kids will like the diorama like art.
Prepare to be slightly spooked as three edible friends go to visit the new neighbor--a mad scientist peanut! (Or was he a Nutter Butter?)
Anyway, the pictures are the best part of the story. The pictures are real-life photographs taken of different foods made to look like characters. That was a lot of fun. The story, well... I'm not sure all kids will be okay with the ending, to be honest. It's like a horror story for five-year-olds, if you know what I mean. (You probably don't know what I mean, but I don't want to give away the ending.)
Final judgement: fun pictures with a fun little story.
We enjoyed this book by the author of Peanut Butter and Cupcake! Doodle, Sprinkles, and Pretzel are off to welcome Dr. Nuttenstiein, their new neighbor, to the neighborhood. The ending surprise, that the "Nutter Butter Cookie Monster" ingests the "Sprinkles' cookie character, is clever. "That's the way the cookie crumbles, " the text reads.
My four year old has begged me to read it to him again and again.
“Because sometimes, that’s the way the cookie crumbles.”
Sprinkles doesn’t feel like helping to clean. She wants to visit the new neighbor, Dr. Nuttenstein. “Word on the kitchen counter was that he was a little ... bananas.” Pretzel and Cheese Doodle go with Sprinkles, and with the door ajar, they go inside. And they see that Dr. Nuttenstein is creating a “peanut butter biscuit beast!” What will happen to the snacks?
Kids will love this one. The illustrations are fabulous 😃
Whoa. That took a dark turn! Wasn't expecting that ending from this otherwise whimsical book. Haha. Love the attention to detail in every scene (the little glasses on the pickles in the jar, the skulls made out of...cheese?). Kids will probably love the ending, instead of sensitive me who literally gasped. haha.
This book follows a trio of snacks as they spy on their new neighbor who turns out to me a scientist that makes a new snack. I would use this book in my classroom for when students need a break and want to listen to a funny story.
Great photos of these snack characters as they visit a Frankenstein-ish vignette. My second graders enjoyed the bit of inferencing that was required of them at the end.
